Best fighting style for self defense?

So I was wondering, what would be the best fighting style to defend yourself in real life/ a street fight? Not in a ring or competition with rules. I doubt it would be the best idea to be trying to sink a gogoplata while I guys stabbing you in the stomache lol. Ive read some about a style called "keysi". it sounds interesting to me but I have no idea if it is legit. Seems like it uses elbows, kicks, stomps, headbutts, walls lol, i dont know. Supposed to be some offshoot of jeet-kun-do or however its spelled, but again dont know if it has any real world value? Would it be good to know jujitsu or muy-thai or just standard boxing and kickboxing? I know alot of fights go to the ground and they usually end quick. I have decent boxing skills but no experience on the ground. Im not the type that goes out and picks fights at all but we live in a messed up world and I think everyone has the right to defend their safety and that of their family. And I believe if someone pulls a gun on you that you have the right to do whatever it takes to end that threat. Just need to learn how to be one step ahead of them..any ideas?

All that matters is you gotta actually know what you're doing, and any wide range of approaches could work.. But you can't expect to kinda learn a couple moves of "so-and-so" and expect to employ it in a real fight cuz that's when you'll get your ass kicked.. Just picture some douche-bag doing the trademark karate stance and then getting brutally assaulted..

Some of my friends used to be into wrestling in HS and they'd be all like "oh we're real tough now cuz we could definitely use this stuff in fights", and I thought it was a joke.. This 1 kid actually tried it once while drunk, and went in to shoot on someone, and he got his face pounded with a real quick left-right combo.. The morons actually believed that you'd be able to execute a wrestling move in a fight, forgetting that you get your face bashed in a fight..

The wrestling abilities COULD help if it turns into 1 of those sloppy fights, rolling around the ground.. But alot of times if you're fighting someone tough, it's not gonna get that far and you just may end up laid out on the floor by yourself.. As far as what I think would be the best approach is the MMA type shit.. You gotta know how to throw/defend punches 1st of all, and then if you got the grappling skills if it gets to that point you got an advantage.. I've also seen a couple fights end with a headbutt right in the face, crumbling someone right down to the ground, lol.

When I was a kid my uncle used to live next door and I used to watch him in his yard do Katas(forms) and train with the Bow Staff and a few other weapons. I asked him if he would train me. At the time he told me to just punch them in the stomach. I was like WHAT? Well, Later on in life I took TAE KWON DO from ages 15 to 17. Well, a couple of times I got in to it with some one face to face, I just kept looking them in the eyes and reversed punched them in the soloplexis(the gut). My uncle was right,It works like a charm. They don`t see it coming and they fold up like a bitch and you can do anything you want. Which, you should walk away after that cause it is self defence, right? So you already have boxing skills, just learn some ground skills from some where for back up.I`ve always been a natural on the ground. If you don`t get in fights much at all and someone gets in your face cause THEIR the asswhole.Go ahead and punch them in the stomach without moving your shoulders as hard as you can. You move your shoulders, you telegraph. they will drop right there. It works like a charm.:p

Hand to hand combat,Combato,Underwood systems ect. are very good tactics in real world situations.

I think the best would be kick boxing and judo for take downs, I wrestle but wouldn’t use it in street fight, at least not anything that brings me to the ground, arm drags, leg sweeps, standing chokes, you don’t know if anyone else will jump in and on the ground is the last place you want to be, I like kick boxing because most people don’t expect leg kicks, elbows or knees and they can be devastating and you just become comfortable with punches coming at you.

The way to win a fight is stay out of it but if its unavoidable then stike first , hard , often and make each blow count.

their are several hybread figting style that some of the Special Forces are tought but generaly isin't available to civilians.

Krav Maga and Sambo would probably be my first choices then Hopkido , Judo , Kung Fu are also a very usefull styles.

The biggest thing is commitment , once you realize that things will likely get physical then make your attack and make it count and don't stop until your the victor weather it is a simple rigid had strike to the throat , poke to the eye, a quick front kick to the knee or it goes to the ground and you heel spur the kidneys and spine.

But knowing a fighting style will not help you in court at all your gonna have to prove that your actions were called for which brings back to the first option , try like hell to avoid the situation. Its better to be called a chicken shit punk on the street than to be sombodys bitch in prison

Technique

Head but, Elbow and as a former D1 Wrestler - the double leg take down - your fore arms are blocking your face as you shoot- puts the guy on his back and unless he knows how to fight off his back (which I certainly don't) he is at your mercy

But having been cuffed after 2 fights (back in the day) and a trip to the er with hand injuries from striking - what's the point? I heard a hand surgeon recount a conversation he had (not to me)- hey you won the fight, but now you need hand surgery and he needs an ice pack.

I.M.H.O.

I practice Brazillian Jiu Jitsu and western boxing. If you know how to throw a good stiff jab cross combo and how to defend a takedown or if it comes to it fight off ur back ull b in good shape. a very high percentage of fights end up on the ground so ground ability is a must. There's also a system called S.P.E.A.R. (Spontaneous Protection Enabling Accelerated Response) created by Tony Blauer that is taught to military special forces all over the world.

Most of the so called self defense techniques taught by any fighting style can give you a good base. My theory is or as I've got older, try and avoid the situation and if that doesn't work get the first shot in and make it count. Head butt, eye gouge, neck strike, and my personal fav a hard shot to the dudes chin, drops them everytime. I haven't been in a fight in over 6 years so what do I know.

While I respect a every post, I don't know how often people actually fight around here. Plus, not ALOT, key word ALOT, of bodybuilders train to fight. One thing you can learn from MMA, is that you need to be well rounded. You need to learn how to box, wrestle, jitt(jiu jitsu), and kickbox. Judo is a pretty nice addition as well. If you really want to learn how to fight, you need to dedicate alot of time to learning and training, because really, alot of guys aren't "natural fighters", and can excel in one style and get SMASHED by novice naturally good fighters.
Also, all this strike first, strike hard stuff sounds good, but when your built like a BBer, people don't play games. They'll sneek you, sucker punch you, jump you, stab you, etc., most guys don't square up one on one. Ask me how I know...ask me how many times I've been snuck

Im a Pro MMA fighter and from what Ive trained and experienced I would honestly say Krav Maga for STREET and MMA for SPORT...

If anyone ever has the opportunity to take a Krav Seminar and Darren Levine is there, take the seminar as he is very informative. Well worth the time and money

well...

all styles will help depending on the situation but I believe if push comes to shove your attitude will be most important....but I'm a lover not a fighter lol.

Great to hear a Pro saying Krav Maga H2H is best for street fighting. These systems discard all the impractical elements of martial arts and focus on the most effective components.

I guess that it depends on your fighting instincts, practice and speed.

But I found that boxing helped my street fight skills enormously.

When you're in a street fight you have to keep in mind that if it's one on one, a lot of different skills will work and you have the option of wresting and using more in-fighting skills, like head butts, elbows, wrestling etc.

But if there are more people involved, even just friends of your opponents and they are just watching, you still have to fight at a distance, just in case one of them decides to join the party.

I got in a few fights once I started boxing, and it was a joke. Whenever I got hit, I almost laughed, here was a guy in one case about 300lbs, 6'-6" (fat kid) but pretty quick, but since he didn't know how to properly throw a punch, they just grazed me or hit me on top of the head, almost like a little girl, I stepped back and just threw one jab, then a right hand and every little shot that I hit him with seemed to be as if it was with a baseball bat.

I guess that when you box a lot, and spar, you are used to getting hit constantly so a punch, especially one thrown by someone unskilled will have very little effect on you. But when you hit them back, yours will do a lot of damage.

The other thing boxing helps you with is keeping your eyes open and remaining calm while being hit.

Boxing will also teach you to stay on your toes and move around quickly, slip and move, and if necessary fight multiple people, you just have to make every shot count and get your hands ready to throw another as soon as possible.

But the secret to being a good street fighter is instincts I guess, I was lucky in that regards, I have 5 older brothers who wrestled and boxed and each of them used to rough me up since I was in diapers.

Krav maga and Hapkido. Hapkido involves ending it ASAP. stuff like the eyes, throat and breaking small bones like fingers. its kind of hard for a guy to stab you if he had 4 broken fingers. It uses alot of leverage focused on a small point to get the job done.
