DENVER - Less than 24 hours after playing in the last game of the season, the Denver Broncos say 24-year-old Darrent Williams was killed. According to Denver Police, Williams was killed in an early morning shooting after someone with a gun pulled up alongside the white Hummer stretch limousine he was riding in.
Police say that it happened near 11th Street and Speer Boulevard at 2:30 a.m. on Monday.
Some of the streets in the area were shut down during the investigation.
Three people were shot and police say the limo was sprayed with bullets. At the scene, 9NEWS could see what appeared to be eight bullet holes in the limo.
Police say the three were taken to area hospitals where Williams was pronounced dead.
The names and conditions of the two other victims, a man and a woman, were not immediately released.
9NEWS is investigating whether any other Bronco players were also in the limo.
Team spokesman Jim Saccomano says he spoke with Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan and others in the organization after police told him of the incident.
"Complete shock. We're speechless. It takes words away. A terrible tragedy," Saccomano said.
Saccomano says police called him at around 3 a.m.
Police say they are still searching for suspects and interviewing witnesses.
"We have no motive yet," Jackson said. "We're hoping to talk with witnesses to find out where they were coming from, and that might give us some clues."
Hours before the shooting, the Broncos lost to San Francisco 26-23 in overtime, eliminating them from the playoff race.
Williams played in the first half of the game but sat out the second half with a shoulder injury.
However, during the game he had a sack, a forced fumble, and led the team with seven sacks. He also returned two punts for 50 yards.
Williams, a second-round pick in the 2005 draft out of Oklahoma State, started nine games as a rookie due to injuries. This season, he took over as the starter for Lenny Walls alongside Champ Bailey, and had 88 tackles, 78 of them solo, and four interceptions.

The following biography was provided by the Denver Broncos.

Selected by the Broncos in the second round (56th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft, Williams made a solid impact during his rookie campaign by playing 12 regular-season games (9 starts) and ranking eighth on the club with 58 tackles (52 solo) while adding one sack (8 yds.), 12 pass breakups, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.
An All-Rookie selection by Pro Football Weekly/PFWA and NFL.com (Gil Brandt), Williams' two interceptions (108 yds.) tied for third on the Broncos, and he returned one of his interceptions for an 80-yard touchdown (at Oak., 11/13) that was the longest interception return by a rookie in team history and tied for the second longest overall in regular-season play. His 108 yards on two interception returns were the second most by a Broncos rookie in franchise annals and the most since Nemiah Wilson's 118 return yards in 1965. His nine starts were the most by a Denver rookie at that position since 1975 (Louis Wright's 11) and ranked as the seventh-highest total since the team tracked starts beginning in 1968.
Along with fellow rookie cornerback Domonique Foxworth, Williams helped Denver become the only team in the NFL to have two rookies post three or more takeaways. Williams also gave the Broncos a threat on special teams, returning a team-high 17 punts for 148 yards (8.7 avg.), including a 52-yarder, while recording 12 fair catches. He placed 13th in the AFC (16th in NFL) with a 23.9-yard average on a team-high 18 kickoff returns for 431 yards, including a 36-yard return. Williams missed Denver's final three regular-season games with a groin injury but returned to see action in both of the club's playoff contests. He registered two solo tackles and a 19-yard kickoff return in an AFC Divisional Playoff Game vs. N.E. (1/14) before making one solo tackle in the AFC Championship Game vs. Pit. (1/22).

Selected by the Broncos in the second round (56th overall) of the 2005 NFL Draft.

College Career

A dynamic player in four years at Oklahoma State University who scored nine times in his career (5 INT returns, 3 punt returns and 1 blocked extra point returned for a score). Only one of four collegiate players since 1996 to record double-digit career interceptions (11) while scoring at least five touchdowns on interception returns. Owns the Big 12 Conference career record with five interceptions returned for a touchdown. Returned two punts (78 and 59 yds.) for touchdowns against Louisiana-Lafayette in 2003, marking the most punt-return scores in a game by an OSU player since the statistic was first tracked by the school in 1959. Tied for 13th in the nation with six interceptions in 2003 as a Jim Thorpe Award semifinalist while scoring four touchdowns (2 INT returns, 2 punt returns) and earning consensus first-team All-Big 12 accolades that season.

Personal Bio

Williams majored in education at Oklahoma State. The son of Rosiland Williams, Darrent Williams was born Sept. 27, 1982, in Fort Worth, Texas.

He was one hell of a ball player - sad and tragic loss for sure

This is very sad! A life ended way too early! I would go on a rant about this situation but I will refrain! :(

Terrible loss

This is a crazy world we live in. What are people thinking out there.
Bless Williams and his family.

ParadiseCup, that's a bummer.

Be careful out there man. I am sure glad you know your way around. I'd be lost where you live. Imagine how horrible that would be for his family? Ugh!:(

its a scary world out there.

you mix alcohol, guns, pride and competition over women and you get tragedy.
