CPAP machines

This seems to be one of the more
Highly recommended
It's got plenty of features - humidifier, heated tube, takes regular filter and microparticle filter, Bluetooth connectivity if you send data to a doctor etc.

What type of masks do you guys use? I’m on like my forth one now and still searching.
Nasal pillows, no mouth covering.

I had 2 sleeps studies done and both were terrible.
If you haven't had one done...its SO DAMN NORMAL NOW that you wont get an individual consultation from a Dr.
You and 5-10 other dudes will go into a room at 10am and they'll explain to you ALL that you're getting a machine to help you sleep. Just regular dads (and moms) have this problem now (I'm sure obesity in America is the main cause).

I sleep with a Dreamstation and I prefer the Resmed. My insurance was giving me grief and my wife and I ended up just going into a cpap specific store and buying one with out a Rx or anything. It might take a week to get used to but find a good mask that isn't annoying and you'll be set. I have to wear a full face mask over my mouth. My septum has been broken several times from football and i need air through my nose and mouth...great investment though. I honestly think i wasted yearssa (and gains) because i wasn't sleeping and recovering correctly.

It's also because we as a species have stopped breathing correctly. Most people are extremely shallow mouth breathers which is causing us all sorts of issues, sleep apnea included. Anyone wanting to know more I highly recommend the book "Breath" by James Nestor. Some truly eye opening shit to consider. And much of it all correctable with some practice and a little self awareness.

Thanks for all the input.
I‘m looking into a hybrid full face mask like the resmid airfit f30
my sleep apnea wasn’t as bad when I was younger but as the years went on, it has gotten much worse and I’m dragging ass in the morning.

I just got a call from my sleep dr that my insurance approved me for an at home sleep study so I’ll be going to pick that up on Thursday and see how this goes

Yep, my faces mask cover my nose and mouth. I get stuffy at night due to allergies so I need the full face one. If you don’t have nasal issues you can just get the one that covers your nose. But I think most folks do better with the full face one. It took me about a week or two to get used to mine, but after that I don’t even think about it. If I go out of town and forget to pack it I’ll be MISERABLE till I get home and back on my machine!

I have the world's worst allergies, but using the nasal pillows and a Bipap with built in humidifier, actually helps decrease congestion. It's like a long slow nasal rinse(without feeling it) between the air and the moisture.

Whats the difference? My mom has sleep apnea but shes in denial, was gonna just get her one and have her try it
an APAP is automated, it senses your apnea and ramps up pressure to open keep you breathing. a CPAP is controlled pressure that is set at a specific pressure, its basically outdated technology. i could not sleep with a CPAP but an APAP is zero issues.

I quit using mine I just couldn’t get use to it. I’d take it off every night while sleeping without even realizing it. I’m about to try to start using it again
Im the same, I cant get used to the thing and always end up taking it off. My girlfriend is ready to kill me lol.

I’m looking at buying a CPAP machine and setting it up myself. Anyone here done it without a sleep study and experience with specific brands of CPAP machine? I’m looking at the Resmed Airsense 10 auto set.
I’ve used a c-pap machine but prefer a bi-pap machine with nasal pillows. The brand I use is Respironics. It’s easy to set up and comes with a humidifier. My pressure is 16/12. I adjusted the pressure settings myself because the therapists had it too low and I’d wake up hyperventilating!

I tried all the masks as well, but went back to the one that covers the mouth.

For the folks who buy on their own and try it out, just a heads-up here. Breathing against positive pressure for the 1st time is strange, even could be anxiety inducing.
(Like you cant breathe great). Complete opposite of what I thought I was getting into. After a bit of work (couple weeks) getting used to it on lowest settings, etc, its now a piece of cake.

I feel better during the day, and no more mid-day crashing lately since my sleep quality has improved greatly.

A question for some of you..... some of y’all make it seem like you couldn’t survive without the machine. Does that not make you feel extremely dependent on something.....? Idk, maybe I’m not wording that correctly. I like to travel a lot. Most of it outdoors, hunting trips, off-roading, shooting competitions, backpack camping...etc. There is no way I could be so dependent on one of these machines and worry (even panic it seems) if didn’t have it with me at night. It just seems like it would really limit me and the type of life I enjoy living. I have a very good friend that used to be my “hunting buddy”, but now he won’t go anywhere or do anything hardly because he has to make sure he has his damn “machine” at night. Yes, I’m aware they have batteries now and solar chargers, etc.... it’s just the fact of being so dependent on it.

How did this become such a huge/common issue to where so many people now require these machines to sleep at night? Why aren’t we focused on fixing the problem, rather than using a machine to get us by?

The 'problem' is when you get to a certain amount of muscle mass (different for everyone), the neck muscles get quite large. When you sleep, all your muscles relax. When those neck muscles relax, their weight is such that it constricts airflow, leading to sleep apnea. CPAPs provide constant airflow so we don't have sleep apnea (which leads to a host of health problems), can get a good night's sleep, and feel rested and refreshed every day.

The obvious solution is to downsize - but this is Professional Muscle, and many of us are still in our prime and adding size, competing, etc. We have no interest in downsizing.

Could I survive without my CPAP? Certainly. But my sleep would be much worse along with my bodybuilding progress.

It really isn't a chore to take a CPAP with you when traveling. Mine came with a travel case that's roughly the size of a shoebox. I don't care if we go somewhere for one night or a week, my CPAP is coming along.

Have been using a CPAP since post blast injury in 2007. Just did a sleep study for the first time since 2009 to see if I'm a candidate for the Inspire
Sleep apnea implant.

Having 57 disruptions an hour during my split study made me a candidate for it. Looking forward to my July consult to discuss options.

Could we survive? Yeah.
Would it suck? Yeah probably.
The same thing goes for a ton of stuff....your shot of test, your blood pressure meds.
You're kind of dependent on those huh? Your machine is the same way.

I recently talked to a sleep "doctor" a couple months ago (absolute fucking joke that they can refer to themselves as that) and they told me that once you have sleep apnea there is no way around fixing the issue. From what I can tell, the only way I could go without the machine would be to lose weight. But I'm going to continue searching for answers. I think there HAS to be a way to help mitigate the problem without the machine and I've scratched the surface of finding answers (Breath by James Nestor) but I know there is SO much more to learn and people are still learning a lot that we don't yet quite understand.

The most recent couple interactions I had in regards to the sleep apnea issue were talking to a bunch of "specialists" who were fat fucks that clearly have ZERO ambition to treat the problem itself. It's all about money. Its fucking disgusting and pisses me off to no end. I already had a machine and I already knew what my issues were and it felt like a sleazy ass sales process from the very first phone call I had. Its all about first getting you in for a $2000 overnight sleep study , and then selling you on the machine and equipment to go with it. I explained to her that I had bad sleep apnea in the past and it had gone away completely with all the weight I had lost, but she literally didnt want to hear it. Her response was "sleep apnea never goes away". I told her I had a whoop strap (which accurately monitors sleep disturbances at night) and that I was feeling fantastic currently. She still wanted to schedule a sleep study. The only reason I set up the appointment at all with them was to help myself be proactive while I continue to add weight again. Complete waste of my money and time.

The entire process felt so wrong to me that I vowed to myself that I would never take their help and if I wanted a new machine or anything in regards to my sleep apnea I would do it all myself. They have called me endlessly since trying to get me back in their (after I told them I was not going to get the sleep study done). I completely understand what you are saying about dependency and I have considered it often. I dont want to be dependent on a damn machine to live correctly but I still want to live my life on my terms. But this is why you see so many people reliant on machines, the medical community has ZERO interest in helping people to be independently healthy.

if you are a stomach/side sleeper like me and can't stand a full face mask, then the Respironics WISP nasal CPAP mask is a great alternative.

Without the machine, I quit breathing 120 times an hour. There is no surgery or cure for my issue. So yes, it sucks to be dependent on a stupid machine for the rest of my life. and would be even worse if I was single; but the alternative is much worse. There are surgeries and other options depending on what the cause is; but many don't have those options and are stuck.

I got a brand new philips dreamstation APAP/CPAP off craigslist for $400. Judging by the YouTube videos , it seems pretty easy to setup.

I honestly don't think we'd last long without the machine. I mean I'm not saying we'd drop dead anytime *real* soon, but the health issues that result is some seriously bad shit. High bp, high heart rate, high cortisol - and all compounded together which would cause a buuunch of shit to go wrong. The most obvious being in regards to heart failure.

120 times in a hour is truly mind boggling, and I thought my 77 was next level. What did you feel like prior to finding out? I literally couldn't function. I was getting to the point where I was scared to drive because I was so exhausted all the time and falling asleep randomly. It was fucking crazy and looking back at it I can't believe I went as long as I did without getting it checked out.

It's such a serious issue to ignore but so many guys do. You forget what normal feels like and become accustomed to feeling like dogshit all the time without even recognizing how bad it truly is.

Sleep apnea can be fatal. Take Reggie White..."Reggie White died on December 26, 2004, at age 43 from a cardiac arrhythmia, which many believe was partly caused by his untreated sleep apnea. The football legend’s CPAP machine was found at his bedside – unused."

It can cause cardiomyopathy, heart attack and stroke. So can this lifestyle. Putting the two together puts all of us at a much higher risk of serious issues. After any of those issues listed above, survival and quality of life may became severely impaired. Regular use of a CPAP is a small price to pay compared to the potential life altering consequences.
