dumb question about weighing food

the bag says for chicken, 4oz is 23g of protein.

when i pull a piece out of the freezer, it might way 8 oz.

after i cook it, and weigh it, its down to 4 oz!

so which weight is the bag talking about? the frozen weight or the weight once it has been cooked?
 
The raw weight before it's cooked.. I don't see how chicken could go from 8oz frozen to 4oz cooked, seeing as it has very low fat content.. It may be cuz you're weighing it frozen, and there's alot of excess water frozen to it.. That's why it should be raw when you weigh it.. Hamburgers are notorious for this tho, and a "quarter-pounder" would never weigh 4oz cooked..
 
their refering to the raw weight , 4oz is the serving size.

What kind of chicken breast are they? , those prefabed precooked things or an actual raw piece of meat?

If you look at the "cooked" patty type things they are never as high in protine as raw chicken and the fat is generaly alot higher , just somthing to think about.

I've been eating so much damn chicken lately I got tired of grilling it (especialy after I burned 10 breast beyond eating) , now I just boil them all , keeps them juicy and I put a little bit of liquid crab boil in the water and it gives them some spice.
Their is a market here that sells whole breast for .99 per pound ,I bring them home skin them and trim the fat then boil till the meat temp is 160 deg and thats it (I know that low but it all gets nuked after for reheating) it nice and juicy you can see all the fat that cooked out also.
 
hey guys, they are just raw chicken breasts like 24g protien and 1g of fat for a 4 oz piece.

the problem is i take them out of the freezer it is frozen and weighs 8oz, then i cook it and it will be like 5 oz. im guessing the 3oz of frozen water is the difference.

there is no time where it is unfrozen raw, it goes from frozen raw straight to cooked.

so when should i weigh it???

cooked should be about the same weight as raw unfrozen, right>
 
Why don't you just look at the total weight of the whole package and just eyeball it? Have you weighed the entire frozen package to see if it's accurate to what the listed weight is? If it's that much of an issue, just see what the entire package weighs frozen, and figure out how many total servings you want out of it.. For example if the package weighs 80 oz frozen, and you plan on having 10 servings with the amount of protein you want, then you know that each serving should weigh 8 oz frozen..

nutritiondata.com would be a good resource for you to look at as it takes into account whether or not things are cooked, how they are cooked, etc

Don't you guys know that freezing chickens makes them grow, actually double in size? :eek: Too bad cooking them makes them shrink that much... :( :D
