Who is watching Kimbo on CBS tomorrow.
Phil Baroni is on the card, looks like a BB, he is no slouch.
As a MMA purist I have mixed emotions about the CBS event anchored by Kevin "kimbo slice" Ferguson as the main event. I realize the potential exposure for MMA a sport that I love and have followed for a long time is astronomical. Many people who otherwise would have never seen an MMA event will watch one on Saturday. It's what they will be watching that I am worried about. The beauty of MMA is the chess match that goes on inside of the octagon or ring. Unlike boxing where most times the better athlete is the victor, in MMA, with the multitude of possible ways to lose, often times the victor is decided by the smarter fighter. With that being said great strides have been made to convey this message to the masses. We are finally moving away from the dark ages of MMA where it was once reffered to by a soon to be former Senator and Presidential hopefull as "human cockfighting" The torch has been lit by the mainstream to accept MMA for cerebal sport that it is and not human cockfighting or a tough guy contest. Looking at the card all of these fights while not fixed (I know in a fight anything can happen) are set up for fire fight type brawls. Robbie Lawler vs Scott Smith are both UFC veterans who while heavy handed and capable of highlight real knockouts are one demensional fighters at best. The most talented fighter on the card is Phil Baroni. The problem with Baroni is even though he has very good wresting skills and some decent submissions he hasn't used them in years, choosing instead to stand in the pocket and either get knocked out or knock someone out. That is why with all of his skills his record is only 10-9. All of these fights will be fire fights highlighted by a Kimbo Slice knockout of Pride veteran James Thompson. The last thing Elite wants is a technical match where to the untrained eye will look like two guys laying on each other. I will be watching because I watch every card from every organization I can but I'll be doing it with mixed emotions. On a side note Gina Carano aka Crush did not make weight she weighed in at 144 4LBS over.
