Lately I've been going to the gym and everything just seems like a chore. Today for example was shoulders, and the normal pump I get just felt like I got hit by a truck instead of feeling good and I caught myself thinking "this hurts. A lot. Why do I do this?" And yesterday I thought I was going to cry like a little girl on my first set of pull ups... with just my bodyweight. Then I realized the for the past week every time I get in the gym it's just... blah. My head and my heart haven't been in it enough to enjoy the pain lately. Have I been overtraining, or just getting burned out or what? I only train 4 or 5 days per week max, but I do go heavy and push myself every workout.

ONLY 4 or 5 days?!? That's a lot. You're probably overtraining. That's that mind/body connection telling you to ride the pine for a week or two. BEEN THERE..DONE THAT!!!

I agree with OTH, overtraining does what you are decribing. How's your appetite, sleep etc? Overtraing will cause many things and lack of drive, is one of em. When's the last time you had a week or more off from the gym?? It will do you a world of good. Do some different shit, like go to the movies, fishing, wahtever. Let your body and mind heal. Then after your layoff go see a BBing comp some where. You will be surprised!!

Hey OTH, how'sit goin bro?

Same as Blitzkrieg here. Tired. I need a week off from training myself.

I agree...take some time off it should help. I actually miss it when I do.

I have recently been exactly where you are right now. Just as OTH stated, you have to listen to your body/mind/CNS and realize that you are wore thin.
Guiltlessly take some time away from training & go engage in some alternative activities. You'll come back healed and hungry to train again!

And even if you don't, that's cool too. You have to let everything in life run its course. Take some time off and then see how you feel. OTH is right on the money, as always!

Im right there with ya.. i have taken the last 2 weeks off from the gym.. I needed it..... 6 days a week in there has been killing me.... even though i was high rep/mod weights since i was dieting for a show.. my head & heart werent in it... i have taken the time off and felt guilty but i needed it

Thanks for the replies. I was suspecting that was the problem, I've just been really hesitant to take time off since I took about a week off last month due to illness and feel like I just got back in the game. You're all right though, the last time I took a week off (being sick doesn't count) was forever ago, and now that I think about it when I came back I remember being stronger than I was before my break.

Just like strongmind said, either you willfully take a break or I promise you, your body will give you one whether you like it or not. Our minds can push us farther than our bodies will go. Remember what bigheinz said: your worst enemy is MOTIVATION. I thought that was pretty cool coming from him. Think of how many injuries we could prevent just by listening closely to what our bodies are telling us!

BLITZKRIEG, I'VE BEEN DOING THIS A WHILE.

IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE THE OTHERS ARE RIGHT AND YOU NEED A BREAK. THINK ABOUT IT FOR A SECOND "BODYBUIDING".........GETTING BIGGER, STRONGER.....

IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU ARE GOING THE OTHER DIRECTION....SMALLER, WEAKER, BEAT UP. THE TERM FOR THAT WOULD BE "BODYDESTRUCTION"....

LIKE THE OTHERS HAVE MENTIONED.....TAKE A BREAK. HOW LONG IT LASTS IS UP TO YOU. IN MY OWN CASE....IF YOU KEEP POUNDING AWAY REGARDLESS OF HOW YOU FEEL....DISREGARDING THE MESSAGES YOUR BODY IS TELLING YOU....YOU'LL BE SORRY.

I USUALLY GET A SORE THROAT...FEEL WEAK FOR NO REASON...MY NORMAL AGGRESSIVENESS LEAVES ME....I STOP HAVING FUN. IF YOU GET TOO RUN DOWN, YOUR SEX DRIVE TAKES A DIVE....AND THEN YOU ARE REALLY NOT HAVING FUN!! LOL.

SO.........BARRING SOME UNKNOWN HEALTH ISSUE WE DON'T KNOW ABOUT.....IT SOUNDS LIKE OVERTRAINING...WHICH JUST RUINS PHYSIQUES.

IT'S GOOD TO SELF-EVALUATE! HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY OTHERWISE YOUR WORKOUTS WILL TURN INTO THE MOST UNINSPIRED, FORCED LABOR YOU CAN IMAGINE.
