Muscle and fitness did a test where they would use an MRI to see excercise induced micro-trauma to determine the best/most effective excercise for each body part.

Front sqauts were more effective than back sqauts, leg press etc...for targeting qauds.
Ronnie Coleman always claimed that before this article was written or testing was ever done.
So they are great!!

I know I always felt it more in my quads doing front squats. Doing front squats though is a bitch. I was always challenged trying to keep the bar from sliding down off of my clavicle. I always felt like I had to cut my set short at the end because the bar would work its way down, and of course if it goes down too far youll lose it. Since I had to cut sets short, I stopped doing them because I couldnt come close enough to failure. To me doing back squats is going to be better for this reason. I would go as heavy as about 365 lbs, while I could use 455 plus on back squats.

They do have those harnesses out there that will hold the weight on your while you squat, and that would be great. If I had one of those I think I probably would have done them more. Ive yet to see a harness at a gym though.

I love front squats, but for me they are a finishing exercise. I do them after I back squat, to really pump the quads.

I just can't stabilize the weight properly when I get enough weight on the bar. It's difficult to keep the bar across your clavicles, and my wrists are not flexible enough to use a clean grip.

Exactly the problem I had with front squats. Once I got up around 375 or so I had a hell of a time keeping the bar up there long enough to complete a set to true failure. I dropped the exercise because of that. I guess I can see doing them as a finishing exercise if done for high reps, but I would worry about over taxing my lower back doing them after back squats.

Absolutely. It is tough on the lower back. If dbol is involved, it's crippling!

Yeah, usually if I was doing something like dbol just getting through 3-4 sets of back squats is all I could handle. Usually then if I were to do a finishing movement it would be either hack squats, leg press, or just leg extensions.

Anyone use the Sting Ray implement for front squats?

hack squat

for me the only other thing than front squats that feel great is the hack squat machine...it kills my legs and i can not do stairs the next couple days
