OK here we go..
-To some this might be news but I'm guessing that many of us know that grapefruit juice is a potent inhibitor of the cytochrome P450 CYP3A4 enzyme, which can affect the metabolism of a variety of drugs, increasing their bioavailability. In many of our cases....orals become more powerful.

-Because of Naringin, grapefruit can also lower high hematocrit levels!

-Grapefruits also contain lycopene which is a phytochemical that has the potential to ward off heart disease, cancer, and macular degeneration.

-Grapefruit also is a source of d-limonene, which inhibits the start of tumors by helping to form glutathione-S-transferase in the liver.

I just wanted to mention these things as I am not an expert and am touching on the topics as a basis for open discussion. My questions are...

1)What kind/type of grapefruit juice must you get to inhibit the enzyme?

2)Is Naringin also found in grapefruit juice or is it better to get it from 1/2-1 grapefruit? I guess I would also ask if drinking GF juice is just as good as eating GF?

Good Find

I also wonder if Pink GF is the same as yellow ?

As far as inhibiting enzymes, I've used Ruby Red grapefruits, 100% juice and, Grapefruit Seed Extract. GFSE is the most convenient (and fewest cals) and seems to work just as well as Juice or an actual GF. It's made from the seeds and pulp of GF.

Careful, depending on what you're taking. I took my GFSE in the morning. I use 10mg of Cialis on cycle to lower BP a bit. It felt like 20mg or more. Turned all red and got congested from that little cialis.

i had actually read that the white (yellow) grapefruit was the only kind that was effective. the ruby red (the sweeter kind) was not effective, for whatever reason.

Good observation.

Grapefruit inhibits the action of several medications. The last thing anyone wants is a drug too linger around building up a potential LD. Not only does the intended drug taken, in conjunction with GF stay active longer, so does the metabolites of the drug. Personally I wouldn't take any drug with GF.

There is a great deal of info available on drug interactions with grapefruit juice
So in other words never take any kind of meds with grapefruit juice

I got warnings from my Dr. and pharmacist not to dring Grapefruit juice or eat it while taking Paxil and losartan.

I have some experience with this, unfortunately not with anything healthy.

white/yellow>pink>red

Regardless of what popular belief is, it isn't "powerful" per say. It does work, probably comparatively speaking to any other form of inhibition; however it's not going to effectively "double your dose" or anything like that. Also more does not necessarily mean more inhibition - there seems to be a ceiling around 8-10oz. drink any more and you are just going to get heartburn and/or a sugar rush.

Can you eat grapefruit when taking clomid / aromasin? What if you eat gf in the morning then take the drugs later on?

And does the crit thing actually work? I've read so much about it but only seen one person do bloodwork to prove either way (it went down 2 points to <49 in a week)

You are essentially inhibiting the liver's ability to do it's job with naringin, I don't see how this could NOT result in MORE liver stress.

I guess that depends on that particular enzyme's function. If it is to protect the liver, then that makes sense, but if it is to protect another organ, or some other bodily function then it might cause stress somewhere else other than the liver.

Naringin is a weak inhibitor of CYP34A, as I linked in my original post. Furanocoumarins/Bergapten are more of a potent inhibitor of CYP3A4 more so than Naringin.

**broken link removed**
Originally, naringin was thought to be the main component responsible for grapefruit-drug interactions. However, studies have shown naringin to be a weak inhibitor of CYP3A4.8,9 It was also demonstrated that the administration of isolated naringin to humans, in quantities comparable to those found in grapefruit juice, did not cause the same degree of inhibition as grapefruit juice.

In addition to flavonoids, researchers have also focused on furanocoumarins found in grapefruit juice as CYP3A4 inhibitors.10,11

Naringin and why its used.

Naringin will make any drug go through the liver five more time's, before it destroyed in the liver. It is added to Drugs to prolong there life in the system.

what if you take grapefruit with lets say orals Dbol or winni , will it make more potent and stay more active as with other meds?

So this Molecular Formula: C27H32O14 4',5,7-Trihydroxyflavanone 7-rhamnoglucoside / Naringenine-7-rhamnosidoglucoside is an additive inhibitor to some pharmaceutical drugs? Do you have anyway to validate this?

Why would you not want up to 30% more potency from your orals?

Just like if I used curcumin or egcg, I'd combine with black pepper...

I'm not sure why people are hung up that Naringin is a potent inhibitor. Out side of that, naringin which is broken down in the gut into naringenin has poor bioavailability.

Enhancement of naringenin bioavailabili - PubMed Mobile

However, naringenin suffers from low oral bioavailability critically limiting its clinical potential.
