growth....training VS diet/drugs

The national thread chris250 started has me re-thinking things I've wondered

My friend whom is 5'11" has great shape but is lacking size (bluenose pics in NPC judge forum)
For the nationals in canada he managed to put on (I think) 11lbs of stage weight...

Being a close friend, his diet is and always is spot on, super sups are dialed in and he used chad nicholls for prep..

Anyway, he does lots of volume (20 sets chest and back I think) usually in the gym for 2hrs!!
For atleast 3yrs I've been wanting him to try DC style or something to put on required mass...but he bucks at the idea...

He competed at 211 or 216lb, so to put on 9lbs and be at top of light heavy is dumb cause hell still be outmuscled by 5'7"ers
So, I'm thinking around 240lb to even be competitive....

Do think the training is what needs changing?? I see shelby put on a tonne of size relativley fast, foaud abiad put on 17lb of stage weight in 7mnths when he worked with chad...

Whatd do u guys think? Or just patience at 5-10lb/yr.. He's 34 I think
He also doesn't use tren...maybe that's the secret.....lol

I've actually put on mass doing high volume training. However, I believe that even with that type of training program, if he isn't getting stronger, he won't get any bigger. I would suggest to him to do more compounds and concentrate on getting stronger on those. My belief is..........mass first, symetry/cosmetics second.
 
you know this is a hard thing to pinpoint...Everyone is different is it's hard to say that changing up his training program would do the trick..What I want to know is does he have long offseason or short ones...Does he go up in bodyweight or stays close to contest shape year around...Answer those questions and I can give more thought out answers

20 sets is not all that much, but the question is, is he in the gym for 2 hours or is he training for 2 hours. IMO it should not take two straight hours to complete 20 or even 30 sets.
 
yeah, no talk time, him and his wife train together... maybe longish breaks??

for 1 show he got up to 270lb or so, but will never do it again, wants to stay around the 250lb mark (currently is at this, and looks pretty good)

long off season>??? he worked with chad for the full year, and had a 16wk prep i believe.....so i would say its long...

i just really wonder how important the training is....after some of the debates here about volume vs hit, someone mad the point about volume basically being hit as your last couple sets are to fail.....i though, "hey thats true"

my heads always spining about routines is all :)

For an advanced lifter, 5-10 pounds of real muscle per year is VERY VERY good.
