Is there any value (+ or -)s to soaking in a hot tub or jacuzzi after a workout - after your shake or meal?

I have always wanted to buy a hot tub for this very reason....

You figure after lifting and proper nutrition and supps would be flowing through your body more efficently because your keeping the muscle warm, thus more blood flow.

Just bro logic, but I would think it could possibly work.

I know alot of MMA fighters take an ice bath after training, but im sure its for helping with inflamation.

I took ice baths after practice in college.. Im positive it saved me throughout the season... Hot tubs and such just dried me out.. The way i see it its like putting heat on a new injury instead of ice...

It doesn't really make a difference. relaxing though

I found this:

Is Soaking in a Tub After a Workout Helpful?
By Mario Fucinari D.C., C.C.S.P.
Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician

During a workout, the body builds up its inner core temperature. The reaction of the body to a workout is inflammation. The body responds to the inflammation by initiating a cascade of hormone release to repair the injured tissues.

Heat immediately following a workout can slow or alter the repair process of the body. Therefore, it is recommended that a cool shower or bath be used after a workout. It is not recommended for hot tubs to be used for at least an hour after your workout. The hot tub used later after a workout should not exceed 10 minutes in order to give relaxation, yet not interfere with the repair process.

Don’t forget that the body is most likely dehydrated, so drink plenty of cool fluids to decrease the core temperature and replace valuable minerals that have been lost during your workout.

I did some Googling about this and there is a consensus that acute injuries should be iced to prevent swelling. There is no real clarity around this subject. As usual, no sports authority is available to give us a fact based perspective. It is all..."Well, I think..."

Cold shower is better eh?

Funny, girls have been telling me I have been needing a cold shower my whole life.

Jumping in to a hot tub or sauna after a work out or even a few hours after is probably one of the most detrimental things you can do to kill your gains.
I found this out from experience and wrote about it in a thread over on IM in someone elses query over there.
My goal after I complete that last reps or stretches is to cool down as fast as possible normally..reduce heart rate relax powo shake in.
Many times I put in claming songs or music in the CD in my car on the way home.
Some of my best gains come from weekend training or when ever I am able to lie down and get a 15-20 minute nap.
This won't be deep sleep, probalby just 20 or 40 winks but it allows you to be sedentary and not running around still expending energy.
Concerning hot tubs and showers-The body is already over heated and tremendously stressed from training and cardio.
Think about it.
There are studies in sedentary people in which those with congestive heart failure were able to generate the same amount of blood flow and circulation to the heart by simply sitting in a hot sauna or whirlpool for 20 minutes which I think they indicated was = to the amount of blood flow 20 minutes of exercise would create under normal conditions.

It's hard for me to get in the hot tub for more than 10 minutes even on my off days it heats and primes my metabolism so much.

contrast showers are much more useful. Short period of hot water followed by long period of cool water.

im actually getting over a back injury and ive been doing the hot cold remedy for a few days now. i'll sit in the jacuzzi for a bit and then hop in the pool for some cooling. it definitely helps me get through.

Cool, im glad i did not buy a hot tub....Seems like theres some hard facts proving it is not benaficial for Post W/O recovery.

But maybe for more bloodflow/nutrient transport a few hrs after a workout ?

Was gonna post this same question last night. I have access to a hot tub at the house Im staying at and have been jumping in after my workout (hour of wieghts 30 min cardio) . Not anymore! Thanks for ths schooling!

hot tubs are horrible for varicose veins... But if you can handle it, doing hot tub/ ice shower 3 4 times in a row is very invigorating, always finish with the ice shower though. Helps with back and knees/hip pains..

Also its called a hot tub, doesnt mean it needs to be hot enough to cook lobster, just luke warm the jets work magic on injuries.

At a very logical, when you get in hot water your circulatory system shunts the blood to your skin - robbing your muscles of blood flow.
