What is better than training a kid who wants to compete in a bodybuilding show....So the other week, I had this kid (A.J.) Who is a former minor league football player, and part time powerlifter...He comes to me, threw a mutual friend who knows both of us...he says, he wantes to compete in the Iowa State Championships next year...(9 months away)...So we set up a training session for today..He says, he need to work on his legs (yeah you know whats up...LOL) So he comes today, and I put him threw hell...We started on Standing Calf raises, (his calfs are very week) and basically do high rep burn sets...(20 reps per set) until the last set, where I did a strip set...(total 4 sets he was fried)...Then it was on to Hack Squats, I started him out with 2 good warm ups..Then sets of 20 rep hacks (going all the way down) a couple of sets, then finished out with a killer drop set doing 4 plates per side for 20 reps, then 3 plates per side for 10 reps, then 2 plates per side for 10 reps ,with a 4 count negative....His quads were on fire...Then it was on to leg extensions for 4 sets of 20 reps (last set was a slow negative set, with drops)...then we finished with lying leg curls, 3 work sets for 15 reps each, last set a drop set (10 reps/10 reps and 10 reps) then seated leg curls for 3 sets of 20 reps (hardly any weight, he was toasted)...all of this in about 60 mins of time...He actully handled everything very well, and nevered complained once...He actully was thriving on it...He said he has never been pushed that hard ever and said it was totally different than football training...After he was all done, I told him I would train him for the State show, I just needed to see if he had the heart to push threw one of my leg workouts...(LOL !!!) the kid has heart !!! Im actully kinda excited !!!

Nice work Chris. God I love training legs. Wait, does that make me a sadist??? I don't know, I've always loved beating half of your body into the ground, while the rest of the Abercrombie Mafia looks on knowing they don't have the drive or will to do what Im doing.

Good luck bringing him in for his first show bro!!!!!!!!

no, a sadist is someone who likes seeing others in pain or humiliated. the word your looking for is a masochist :D

Chris:

While I will bow to your training experience over mine, I will offer this, the true test isn't what he does on the first leg workout, its whether he show up for the second one.:)

I didn't know there was an Abercrombie Mafia up in Detroit... I always figured it was a different place. Anyhow, the question I've got for you is, and I've been through the same workout chris described above with a trainer, how are you supposed to really fry yourself without a partner? I can't do drop sets on a squat or hack, I can't get negatives in, etc... so, what are your secrets pumpt? I am working with Phil, and will run my ideas by him before I do anything you suggest. Thanks bro

Im an oddball because I absolutely love to train legs. Im only 5'5, and when I was in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade I weight 240lbs. So my legs and calves started to build up carrying that much weight around. I used to snack on cottage cheese as a kid also. When I got to high school, I understood the importantance of training legs once a week. I was doing this during summer football lifting in order to get my 40 yard dash time down.

Now mind you bro, I only have a 28" inseam. Im short, and my legs tend to build up quick. The workout I followed I actually got out of a Muscular Development. It was supposedly Nasser El Sonbaty's workout. Also, please don't boo me, but I have to do my squating on the Smith because my knees and ankles took such a beating through wrestling and football.

I always stretch the quad and hamstring for about 10 minutes or so. And no matter what, Leg Extensions are my first movement. I've found this warms the knees up. I just don't mess around, I push my quads on extensions. 4 sets 15-30 reps. Progressing up in weight.

Next is Leg Press. Now again, you have to remember with me being short, I don't have far to push the weight. Right now, Im building my legs back up after an 18 month layoff. Once I move onto the Icarian sled, the weight will come on. Again, 4 sets 15-30 reps, progressing up in weight each time. Our Icarian sled can only hold 24 plates. Eventually, 24 plates is my opening set. Then I will stack 2 plates on top of the sled. 2 sets like that, then if I can convince a friend, I will have him sit on the sled. I know it sounds crazy, but I swear as God as my witness this is my leg workout when Im full go.

Next up is Squat. I will always open up with a "warm up" set with a plate on each side. I always keep my feet about shoulder width apart and go to parallel with each rep. 2 plates for my first set, 3 plates for my second. My third set is when Im starting to really feel it. I will add a quarter, then final set is 4 plates. With squatting Im 15-25 reps. Again, Im on the Smith because of my knees and ankles just not being able to handle freesquatting. Plus, this works well for me.

Finally is my Hack Squat. After I watched Dorian's Blood and Guts, I do my Hacks like he was doing in the vid. Quads together, and I take each rep deep. I'll start with a plate on each side and work my way up with a 15-20 reps range.

My legs are my best part. This is the only thing being short has helped me with in life. I also make sure Im well rested the night before. Im in bed by 9:30 - 10 PM and will even slack a little at work during the day. Also, I work in a coal fired power plant where the temps can get up to 150 degrees in work areas. And no fellas, this is no exaggeration. I love to train legs.

That was an awesome reply, thanks for taking the time to write it. I am very much into learning about leg training (I just posted a thread about that before I read this), and think that you know what you're doing. Although I can't give out details about Phil's training plan that I'm on for legs, I just started downloading Dorian's "Blood and Guts" movie to check out later tonight. I have longer legs than you, but they seem to be one of my best body parts... although I don't think they're composed of the same fast twitch muscle fibers that most of the people on here have, rather, I did a lot of road cycling and that really seemed to develop a nice thickness and sweep. Truth be told, I never squatted -- or did quadricep work period -- until this year, when I stopped riding my bike. It was impossible for me, during my riding years, to train legs in the gym and still be halfway decent at riding my bike. Although I may not have been squatting and stiff leg deadlifting during those years, I hit my legs hard nearly every day with intervals, hill climbs, and various other forms of punishment. Here is a picture of one leg, and even at my current 15% fat pudginess, you can see the beginnings of a nice leg. Now that I'm squatting, they really seem to be putting on mass, even though I look like a wimp in the squat rack with my low weight. That's how it goes, I suppose.

sorry to hijack your thread, Chris. I'll put it back on track and say that when a trainer I worked with did that SAME workout to me, I was sore for 7 days. You are cruel. But good.

Pumpt - Did you happen to walk into my gym tonight? :D Cuz I could've sworn the entire Abercrombie Mafia was there doing Curlz for the Girlz while I was training legs ... ;)

Chris - Great story! Sounds like your new client has a lot of heart. Best of luck with his prep!

Yeah, it's usually wise to ease into things with new clients.

If you are really choosy about who you will work with the trial by fire method works well IMO. If you are attempting to build up your client base and am in it for max clients for max $$$$$$$ then pushing them too hard can back fire, cuz lets face it most people dont like to train their ass off like we do.

Also, most people don't like debilitating DOMS and muscle fiber necrosis for no good reason...

That must be a new set mo!!!! The Detroit Chapter was in full effect in my gym yesterday. I noticed they usually don't come around to the free weight area until a nice looking lady comes over to it. Odd how that happens. Sorry about jumpin off topic.

For sure I mean obviously if I am sore my trainer overworked me, lol.
