If most of us are good people why do we enjoy horror, sadistic torture movies?

We also tore off the bottom of a turtle's shell so we could experiment with the heart. I was an aid for a phd student doing a study on brain chemistry related to exercise.
The first and last turtle I prepped for eating was just so damn gross. Minus the shell a turtle is not a pretty creature,, and all the blood.. I didn't then and will never eat a bowl of turtle soup again. Ever.

Was the turtle still alive when you took the shell off? We used chloroform or ether to knock it out, and then cut off the shell. The heart needed to be beating so we could drop several hormones on it and observe.

No its head had been cut off. I come from a family of hunters. Deer, boar, pheasant, quail, rabbits, everything. And I've skinned them all and loved the delicious meat and have a whole freezer full. But none were as bad as those turtles. You have to cut off the head and hang the turtle by its tail while it's blood drains, then

You know what? If you want to know more talk to a friend about it. It's rough. Pretty gross. And turtles (at least most) are just are such gentle creatures. I won't eat them again.

Ever killed, cooked and ate a snake?
No, we didn't hunt snakes. My father said they're not good eating. Ate turtle and alligator though. But both were in restaurants. I prefer mammals and fowl.

I don’t care for them… My reason is the sheer lack of logic in how people in the movies react to situations. It bugs me too much for me to let it go and enjoy the movie.

Yes. A cobra when I lived and worked on a game preserve on the Athi River Plains in Kenya. Tasted like shoe leather.

Scariest movie I ever saw was The Exorist. And I was a young adult. Could not sleep the night I saw it. Rosemary’s Baby is another.

Perhaps the scariest things are things that could actually be true or are in some way connected to something true.

This is the key. The slasher monster stuff is weak. Saw the original was great, it was disturbing, had gore, and was realistic. I'll never be able to watch movies about superpower's etc. Although Batman was actually good but it was more adult like than avengers, the comic book stuff.

Yeah, we had a neighbor that liked to make turtle soup! They had a clothes line with about 4 of them hanging to drain the blood.

Some are very annoying! The good ones are smart and make you feel like you are in their place.

One joke in horror movies is how the black folks always die first.

I went on Netflix today and one of the top movies being watched was the “New” Texas Chainsaw Massacre so I just finished watching it.

The story doesn’t really mean anything because it was mainly watching humans get slaughtered and murdered as graphically and painfully as possible.

If most of us are inherently “Good” human beings then why do we spend money on watching these things and in many cases we will go to the movies, spend money on popcorn and soda only to watch ourselves get disgusted and grossed out.

What makes us do this to ourselves and in many cases we love to drag along friends and family members so they can have the same “Experience”?

Interesting topic. I used to be obsessed with horror/slasher films but haven't watched movies like that in years and it's honestly had a positive impact on my life. When I say obsessed...I mean obsessed. I owned hundreds of old horror dvd's and was a nut for stuff like that.

I think as humans we like a thrill and being scared or afraid satisfies that to some degree. That's why I loved it...I loved the feeling of being scared and searched that out.

For me, it was kind of like porn where the more you watch the crazier stuff you want to see. For me (emphasis on "for me" because these types of topics tend to make someone sound "holier than thou") it made a significant impact to my life when I gave up both of those things about a decade ago.

I do also think there is a religious component. I had to ask myself if I was edifying God by watching those things and the hard answer was a resounding "no"...which sucked at first because a whole lot of my time was horror movies and porn.

I could never kill and eat a turtle, I'd have to be near death. I've become such a little bitch as I've gotten older, especially when it comes to animals (humans can fuck right off). Only snake here that's ever been recommended for eating is a Rattlesnake, and they're quite good grilled or fried. Cook it like fish and it feels like a cross between chicken and fish. Only time I've ever killed one was when one wouldn't stop placing itself at the bottom of the steps to my side porch; little close for comfort. Alligator is delicious, especially the legs, but again, I could never kill one...

I thought alligator was good. A little greasy, but the meat has a sweet taste. There's a place here down on 2nd St that serves them like kabobs. But reptilian food just seems wrong for some reason. Life or death I'll eat anything. I've eaten Thai water bugs and tried one of those boiled baby chicken embryos inside the egg. Now those were disgusting. A chicken broth taste but the texture...bad! And don't ever eat a century egg. Fair warning there. Nobody likes the killing or cleaning, but it's the eating that keeps me coming back.

Now that we're going down the rabbit hole 😂...

So you've been to Southeast Asia? Ever give fried tarantula or scorpion a go? I haven't been there, but I used to keep and breed both arachnids and reptiles, so if a spider or scorp died of natural causes, curiosity killed my cat and I gave it a shot. Scorpions, atleast smaller ones, are quite tasty if fried. Larger ones have a very hard exoskeleton that makes it hard to enjoy. They taste a bit like shrimp with the shell on. Tarantula is an interesting one, the legs and cephalathorax are edible, but I'll pass. Don't eat the abdomen, it's like a giant pimple popping in your mouth 😳

Yeah, I was in Phuket on vacation (I guess that's as good a word as any). The beaches were great and the scenery incredible but the back streets were depressing. It's nothing even close to resembling life in the Liberal Western Democracies like US, UK, EU, Canada, AUS/NZ. No arachnids yet. My son had a tarantula for a pet until he lost interest and it became my pet. Did NOT look edible. I imagine scorpions like water bugs where you crack them open and eat the insides. I went through a bag of cricket protein powder but it really didn't taste all that different than most other protein powders.

I'm content with my boring diet of red meats, poultry, chicken eggs, lean pork, fish and seafood. I'm much more settled down now that I've crossed so items off my bucket list. I'd still like to visit AUS/NZ and see the Earth from space. I'd go back to Italy and Greece and Canada. But not. Much other travel. The East and the Middle East can fuck all the way off. India is a cesspool. Maybe home to Poland one last time.

I got old, dude. I'm fighting it but it will overtake me soon enough. My family, my kids (3), my friends and associates but fuck everyone else. I can smell psychosis on people within 4 sentences and just have no time for it. Family, friends, fitness, good food, and I'm content. Get these kids off to a good start. And then? We'll see.

Yeah, hearing the screams of a dying animal gets to me too. As a kid I remember my cat bringing in a baby bunny into our garage. He had bit it real bad and it was bleeding. He must have severed the carotid because blood was shooting out of its neck all over the back wall. It looked like a horror show.

Then there was the medical school at college. I wasnt taking the physiology class, but would walk past an old building they used for the class that looked like a grain silo. They had a pig in there I guess, and would cut an artery and then measure the cardiac output by the volume of blood that came out. The pig was squealing really loud, such that I could hear it outside of the silo where I was walking. The guy I was with was taking the class and told me what the terrible sound was.

In an undergrad physiology class we had to kill frogs. That was kinda nasty too. Cut the head off and then ram a probe down the spinal cord. One poor girl cut off the head and then dropped the frog. It hopped all over the room! I caught it and finished it for her. We also tore off the bottom of a turtle's shell so we could experiment with the heart. I was an aid for a phd student doing a study on brain chemistry related to exercise. We would put rats in a big bucket of water with high sides. It had to swim for many hours he told me. I helped put them in. Later on he would come back and take them out and then we had to chop off their heads with a little guillotine. He would then analyze the brain for certain chemicals, see what happened after all of that exercise. Crazy stuff.
Man I couldn't do that no way

I love alligator tail.they sell it here at a bunch of restaurants. Its called gator bites

This reminds me a little of people using this new term describing themselves as an "empath" aka "look at me im a good person I feel others pain, badly." I once had a bad interview where the girl kept describing herself as an empath over and over again lol.

It's really weird when people do that. It's trying too hard to convey a positive image and usually convincing themselves it's the truth when most often it's not. Regarding this thread many of us probably write things we wouldn't usually say out loud. The OP was a good one and basically asked can we be good people and enjoy these horrible and sadistic movies. That's why I started my post with I am a good person because I like most on here are not fucked up but we still enjoy these movies. Well everyone is fucked up in many ways but I just mean the obvious. I hate violence towards innocent people or animals. Now the term "innocent" isn't as black/white as it may first seem due to various factors such as mental illness. Although some people really do need to just be put down because they are not right (child rapists/murderers etc).

OTH has made some great posts and I completely agree. We all have different opinions in life regarding violence, torture, death penalty, eating meat, justice and various other things. However, some may think people who enjoy sadistic movies could be that way in real life or perhaps fantasize about such things and that couldn't be further from the truth. Some have made very thoughtful and insightful posts about experiencing such things in real life but there are other reasons as well. I started watching horror movies when I was a child and have always enjoyed them. I don't particularly go for gruesome movies but just the horror genre in general. But sure gruesome and sadistic horror can be impactful and gripping and it's one of the reasons many enjoy seeing such things on screen.
