My Sports Psychology instructor really brought something to light with me yesterday:
It was in regards to my post operation (hernia) and she told me, "Imagine the wound healing, and the muscle healing, and everything being corrected."
She proceeded to tell me some facts to back up that statement and how mental imaging is proven to accellerate healing.
I am reading a great book right now as well entitled The Magic of Thinking Big. As a matter of fact a member from this board sent me a copy of it suggesting I read it. It is changing my life.
This whole topic corresponds with bodybuilding so well because simply keeping your mind in a positive nature leads your body to follow. If you think positive, you will do positive things. If you rid your mind of all negative thoughts, your body and actions will not go negative. It is so basic, yet so advanced at the same time.
The reason I see this is because I see so many people finding things wrong with everything and complaining. If you step back and look at the big picture, one can see how constant negativity and complaining can lead you to ultimate failure...
I just find this whole psycho-dynamic range of thought very interesting, but especially the imaging-healing part in particular, it just all kind of fits in together.
What does everyone think of the imaging idea? I feel there will be a lot of mixed opinions.
Hope everyone is well!

THAT THIS IS WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO TELL YOU BEFORE YOUR SURGERY WHEN YOU WERE SO UPSET ABOUT LOSING SIZE FOR A FEW WEEKS.

THAT THIS IS WHAT WE WERE TRYING TO TELL YOU BEFORE YOUR SURGERY WHEN YOU WERE SO UPSET ABOUT LOSING SIZE FOR A FEW WEEKS.

Haha, actually man, my surgery post I continue to mention how I have accepted that I will lose some size but I was thinking postive and asking people what I can do to try my best to maintain. Actually its funny that you say that because my instructor continued to explain how you can't use health issues as an excuse for life. You find ways around your surgery to maintain size and you find ways around your health issues to stay happy. So bro, I see how you could misinterpret that.
Phil, I respect you as a bodybuilder, I don't think theres one public video I havent seen with you in it. I respect your thinking and you as a person in the sport.

Heres an excerpt from my surgery post:
"At this point I am honestly looking forward to an excuse to take a break! I get to rest and recover all of my other little injuries and Im hoping that i can RESET my body so to speak!"

"Yea, and my doc told me that 2 weeks of no lifting at all, then I should feel good enough to do some light machines for the next two weeks, and then after 4 weeks I can slowly add weight in accordance to pain....Meanwhile, on the couch, its going to be forearm curls, static holds with my calves, and some neck work.... wooohoo"

But lets talk about what I posted ok. :)

If we are talking about visualization techniques and the mind yes it is very possible to use your mind to heal and grow and burnt fat.
It helps.
People may doubt this but when bulking I hardly ever weighed myself but I had a goal to hit and would constantly say 300, 300, 300.
granted this must be a realistic weight as I would start gaining campaigns in the mid 280's or so and I'd hit my goal each time. I did this when I was competing as well to hit a weight class.
Again this ain't gonna work f you are 250 and want to hit 320 in 4 weeks but to me it still helped to "think" that weight.
I used to mumble "burn fat" during my cardio.
And visulaize growth before bed using key words as "muscle" "grow" "recoup" "rest" and it helped a lot mentally anyway.
I really used to be in that stuff even went to a sports pyschologist for a while at college for free-he had been working with a world class powerlifter and wanted to see what he could do with a bb'er.

Yea its great stuff! I have so much interest in it! That is what sealed the deal on my psychology degree. I hope to go back and get a masters and hopefully be able to use that in sports psychology later in life! This shit works! This is going to be a great semester, I can feel it!

Yes. Visualization quantifies a goal. Goals activate motivation. Motivation gives results.

I think there is a great deal of truth in your words Massive G. I have talked to others in the field of psychology who agree as well. I use mental imaging to achieve my goals.

My opinion, as far as injury, and surgeries are concerned is that you are very lucky ironserenity. Your recovery sounds like a walk in the park considering the injuries that some have had on this board. I've had two debilitating injuries since I've been training. The first, was a shoulder injury, that didn't allow me to do flat bench press for 5 years. The second was a major muscle tear that took one year to heal and develop scar tissue. Even going through all of that, I now have more muscle than I've ever had in my life.

Count your blessings.

ABSOLUTELY

Of course it helps! Positive thinking is a prerequisite to success. Successful people are at home when they are winning and shocked when they lose. A pessimistic person is waiting to fail and is surprised when they win! It's absolutely vital. Even if it's not a 20 minute meditation on success, a positive and successful mindset will beget success.

I've talked about this many times. I believe it's partly scientific and mathematically explainable but I also believe there is a greater action at work there.

In many ways, in all things in life, you yourself are the limiting factor. Not genetics, or poor parents, or bad spouses, etc., etc., and etc.! Excuses! You are uniquely responsible for your own success.

There is a spiritual element to all life and it involves faith. If you truly believe you will be successful - you're sure of it - you will be. But not by luck or chance. It's simply part of the greater nature of the universe.

Yes the power of positive thinking. Our minds hold the key to so much and yet we so underutilize this. Positive thought breeds positive actions and end in positive outcomes. Not only for training but wound healing, diesease curing, Life's battles and more. An old artist friend of mine who has passed on now believed very heavily in this. His art was proof of his positive thinking. He believed and thought good things and his paintings reflected the goodness around him. It rubbed off on anyone who knew Eric. He had a gift of inspiriing people in so many different ways. He did it all through positive thinking. So we often focus on the negatives and then wonder why all the negative feedback around us. If we would just turn that around and focus on all that is good, we would be much healthier, stronger and look better. So when you are sick think hard about being well, when you feel weak think harder about strength and power, it really does work.
