Regardless of your fitness goals a long layoff will eat you alive. Sometimes it is unavoidable due to injury or illness. I will never be a competitor due to genetics but I realized that I don't have to be a flabzilla either.

The first few weeks back at it are the hardest and in this depression is something those who have never touched a weight, downed a protein shake, or hit a treadmill at 5AM will know nothing about.
 
even my easy weeks in the gym which occur once a month make it "difficult" to get back to it the following monday

Saint, I'm right there with you, brother. I came down with bronchitis in the Fall of last year, and didn't return to the gym until February due to my hectic work schedule. Getting back has been BRUTAL. My strength is gone. That's the most depressing part. The soreness, in the beginning, was ungodly. Its gotten better, but the strength is still pathetic.

It will get better. Keep fighting the good fight.

WELL, I USED TO BE IN TRACK....

YOU GET TO WHERE YOU CAN RUN 5MILES..2.5 OUT ....2.5 BACK HOME EVERY OTHER MORNING. IF YOU STOP DOING THAT FOR A COUPLE MONTHS [FOR WHATEVER REASON...] DON'T EXPECT TO JUST JUMP RIGHT BACK IN THERE.:D
 
Give your muscle memory a chance to do its thing, you'll be back!!!!!!!!!!!!
 
I hear ya. Damn it's tough to get back in the game again.

Some good music in the mp3 player makes it a lil easier to stay with the cardio, for me at least. Of course finding a hottie to date is always good motivation to head towards your goal!

The fact that you are back and saying this is a good indicator that you'll be back in saddle soon and it'll feel comfortable.
 
i understand what you are talking about bro...i havent had a pro-longed layoff to say but i dont hold on to muscle well at all...i can miss a wk & feels like i am starting all over again...stick with it...muscle memory will kick in & you will be good to go...good luck!

Just by being in the gym, you're leeps and bounds better then the average guy. Keep hitting it!
 
injuries

i dont like coming back and i hate not training even more :)
in the last 2 years i have been out for about 18 months and in for about 6
i had gyno surgery and have had tendonitis in my arm for a long time
i have tried to go back on 4 occasions after long periods off like 4 months
ive had 2 shots of cortizone and am just getting back 4 weeks in now :)
so i feel your pain and the tendonitis appears to be good so far i am gonna take it very slow this time but my right shoulder is giving my fits and ive neveeeer had trouble with that before but its the same side ( right ) so i dont know if that has anything to do with it. man getting older sucks :(
no injuries from 24-30
for the last 5 years ive had 4 or 5

Interesting topic here.....

I just had torn tricep repair surgery this past Thursday. I went into the gym today for the first time to work my "good" side (right) and went into such a depression it is hard to pull out. I was up to 250 or so a couple weeks ago before my injury. I can see myself just shrinking away.....I will probably try to keep what I have but don't know if I will ever get back into it full blast again......
