He has had this on and off since 8th grade. Actually passed out at wrestling practice 2yrs ago in 8th grade and was taken to the ER. Tests were run, nothing was determined. Im thinking it could possibly be a hydration issue, but it could also be due to hearing possibly? We took him to numerous doctors and they were obviously idiots because they couldnt figure it out, but we know SOMETHING is going on.

Background. 5'10 160 15yrs old. He has slight loss of hearing in his left ear also. Been lifting with me at the gym for past 6 months with no problem or any problems like this. Suddenly its coming out again, and id like to know whats going on. He starts to stumble and feels slightly dizzy. He says hes only dizzy when he sits down or stands up or even laying down. He said if he focus' his eyes on something hard it starts to go away, but if he relaxes it comes back. This only happens during wrestling season or periodically when he exerts himself cardiovascularly with lots of movement. When it does happen it will last through the night and go away by morning. It does not happen all the time either. He goes through periods of time when this happens, then long stretches when it doesnt happen. He said its usually after practice that he notices it. I think it might be kicking in during practice, but he doesnt notice because he is constantly moving.

THOUGHTS?

Has he had any MRI's or Cat Scans done?

Has he been to a chiropractor?

bro im a doctor by no means, but man it sure does sound like inner ear problems to me, a guy at work said the exact same thing happened to him and he went to the doctor and at first they couldn't figure it out they ran a bunch of test and finally they found out he had a bad inner ear infection. since your bro has problems with his hearing then i could be possible inner ear problems, i would take him to a specialist just to be on the safe side and rule that out first and foremost. Good luck bro, i know thats some scary shit when that happens to your brother.

Does he ever complain that the room seems like it's spinning when he first gets up in the morning?

Sounds like vertigo caused by inner ear problems to me... does he have any of the symtoms mentioned here?

Inner ear disorders can cause dizziness or vertigo. A person with vertigo may feel as though he is spinning around in space. This is called subjective vertigo. Another type of vertigo is called objective vertigo. A person with this disorder feels he is standing still while his surroundings are turning around him.

Vertigo often begins suddenly and may vary in intensity. It may be constant or it may come and go. Vertigo is often mistaken for lightheadedness. Lightheadedness is a feeling that you are going to lose consciousness or pass out. This feeling is not caused by an inner ear problem, but is due to a lack of oxygen flowing to the brain.

Unlike lightheadedness, vertigo can be accompanied by the following symptoms:

• tinnitus or ringing in the ears
• decreased hearing and
• ear pain

Request to take him to an Ear, Nose, and Throat doctor.

b-boy is on the mark.. i had a girl i employed as a personal trainer when i owned my gym.. same exact symptoms she had.. it would come and go ect.. went to the ear specialist and bings.. vertigo.. was placed on meds when it occurs and she is back to normal in a day or so..

Vertigo should basically clear up with a short course of antibiotics. These docs should have AT LEAST diagnosed it as vertigo and put him on this. I guess i assumed the obvious. Which is why i asked about the MRI's and/or Cat scan.

You guys sound like you nailed it. Hes beein to an ear, throat, and nose doc and they couldnt diagnose it. He said all the symptoms you guys describe are exactly what he experiences. Im going to have my parents set up an appointment and suggest that this might be it, and he be checked.

This board ROCKS. WTF do i need a doc for, il just come here and then go to my doc and TELL him whats wrong with me!

Could be anything between labyrinthitis and a tumor...
Could even be some kind of "heart murmur" that is making arterial blood gets mixed with venous blood.

just remeber that if it is vertigo, it can be with him for the rest of his life.. such as my trainer.. she gets nailed with it about once every two to three months..

He went to one of the best specialists in the area (who is also a surgeon).

VERDICT

Meniers Disease. It has symptoms of vertigo and is a fluid buildup of the inner ear. He is on medication and it should be better soon. Thanx everyone!

Glad to here lil toopoo is ok.

Yeah i had a friend that had a tumor in his ear and went through the exact same symptoms. He couldn't do sports for too long cuz he would pass out.

I'm glad they found out what it was tho

What about menierre's disease? Touched on the subject a few times in college... Also people with hearing troubles have trouble with balance sometimes...

what meds do they have him on? my dad has meniere's disease and takes a potassium sparing diuretic and watches his sodium intake, but there is not really a clear cut treatment for the disease. they can insert a shunt which help to drain the excess endolymph. my dad still has some attacks which cause him to become ill and have the dry heaves. he can actually feel when the excess fluid finally drains and calls it his ear "popping."

Wow didnt know you guys had already talked about Menierre's... Shows how much I pay attention:) Anyway good luck with your brother TP4U!
