Hey guys! I am seeking advice on what trainer to hire. I know we have several great ones on this board and I’m trying to find the one who will best suit my goals. I consider myself somewhat of a “special needs” patient due to my extensive medical history the past few years. I have always loved to work out and lift weights and I still do. In high school I was a 3 sport athlete and 6’1 225lbs roughly 13-15% BF and never had any problems losing fat or gaining muscle. At 19 years old I was diagnosed with a very rare brain tumor called an Intramedullary Ependymoma (Google it if you like) that was located in my brain stem. I had two back to back surgeries to have it removed and they were successful. Prior to surgery and during my recovery I was put on cortical steroids and ended up gaining about 60lbs in two months time. 3 years past and in a routine check up we found my tumor had returned. I quit school and went home to have surgery. It was successful! A month later I started 6 weeks of aggressive daily radiation therapy (IMRT).
Since my last surgery (Feb. 2007) I have had no signs of tumor growth and all my checkups have been clear. A year and a half later I was cleared to start an exercise program. At that time I was roughly 315lbs and unsure of BF%. It’s been about a year and I’ve been working out regularly and trying different approaches to dieting and have not been very successful. Although about 3 months ago I found out I had the testosterone levels of an 80 year old man and low thyroid levels, which might have something to do with why my body comp hasn’t changed much in the last year. My doctor recently put my on a maintenance dose of Test Cyp 200mgs EOW until I get in to see my endocrinologist next week (FINALLY!). I know this dose is low and after 8 weeks I haven’t noticed any changes to speak of. Hopefully this will be changing soon and I will also be getting on some thyroid meds as well.
Currently I am 25 years old 6’1 285lbs unsure of BF%. I am a “full house” body type. Naturally big and muscular but fat now, I look like a linebacker. Currently I train 4 days a week (chest and tri’s, back and bi’s, legs, shoulders & traps) with cardio after every session. My goals are pretty typical, I want to lose fat, and gain muscle just like everyone else. I don’t have any desire to compete (although it would be a dream come true) I just simply don’t think it’s in the cards for me, I know my limitations and I think I’d rather just be a big and around 10% BF.
So now that you all kind of have a background on me, is there a trainer who had successfully trained someone with health complications of this magnitude? Or is there one who would be willing to tackle this kind of challenge? I know that working with me would not be easy, but I am willing to work as hard as my body will permit. I am no stranger to hard work, dedication, and discipline. People don’t normally live though this type of thing and if they do it’s not for very long. I consider myself very lucky and extremely blessed to have made it through this and with very little deficits.
I can’t hire someone today as being unemployed my cash flow won’t allow it, but I hope by the beginning of Oct I will be able to afford it. Thank you all for reading, I know it’s a lot of information to consider (I left a lot out actually) but I figure this will give you all a “good idea” of what I’ve been through. I look forward to your responses!
