It's a long story but we had a daughter a year and a half ago. Personally, I think she's still postpartum but again, very far outside my range of expertise and I can't back that up. I think her HPGA may still not have come full circle yet. She is asymptomatic for insomnia, rather her problem seems to be in her inability to remain asleep for periods longer than what she claims to be 3-4 hours at a time. This parasomnia did not exist prior to her pregnancy last year. She claims she slept fine pre-birth and there is no apparent current or pre-existing pathology or abnormalities to suggest any type of acute disorder. CBC/diff normal. I believe her LDL to be a bit on the high side though not cause for concern.

Diagnosis would be difficult since there exists no pre-pregnancy baseline for analysis or comparison. Since the parasomnia has had not impaired her ability to function normally and appears to be more a general discomfort or feeling of fatigue, I'm content to treat symptoms at this time. If the condition persists for longer than 6 months or her ability to function worsens or becomes diminished, then I would suggest a specialist.

No caffeine, no diphenhydramine. No drugs of any kind.

5-htp, L-tryptophan, and gaba (already have these 3)

I'm a little late in responding, but this caught my eye. If her desire to stay away from 'drugs' is really strong or based on past addiction problems, I'd stay away from kava. Some varieties are ridiculously potent, and it's not uncommon to hear reports of native drinkers drooling on themselves and passing out (have you seen the size of these islanders? This is not an easy thing to accomplish) or loading tourists into the back of their truck because they can no longer walk or see straight.

This isn't really a problem with most easily available kava preps but they'll all still work very similarly to benzos, so if she's being careful because she was an addict, just keep that in mind. Some varieties can also cause mild stimulation, so she could end up pretty stress free but still unable to sleep.

I've heard of this! One of my friends in college suggested it to help fall asleep after partying all night. He swore by it. I never had the patients to try it back then. I'll give it a shot tonight. I'm a little more patient these days :rolleyes:

everything is debateable... may be proof to that but i know for damn sure it takes away my girls leg cramps at night and it relaxes my muscles and puts me to sleep.. so the body does uptake it orally.
 
Thank you all so much for all the suggestions. She has no history of addiction unless you count chocolate but that seems inherent to the female lot. She's pretty fit and very much a naturalist. She's having excellent results with just 50mg of 5htp and I must admit, I'm taking 100mg twice a day myself. Out of the many great OTC supps available, I can certainly pin a wee testimonial to the efficacy of 5htp. It can be a bit sedating though so I may skip my daytime dose and just enjoy the night time dose. I'm a little too "relaxed" in the gym. Almost like a beta-blocker. Weird.
 
Not sure if it has been mentioned but 150mg of benedryl works great for me (my gf takes 50-100mg). We take it 1 to 1.5 hrs pre-bedtime it makes me nice a drowsy and ready for bed.

Me too, but see above (can't be a drug).
 
chamomile tea but.... What she really needs to do is figure out why she is having a hard time sleeping and address her concerns/problems/anxiety w/e it is keeping her up. I had a friend that always used to take an ambien or some kind of pill to sleep, my question was, when does that ever stop?

Get her mind straight, relaxed and at ease, she will sleep
