My love/hate relationship with deadlifts and powercleans

I love deadlifts and powercleans... but I hate how I always tear up my shins.

Last week our gym got some new barbells that are particularly "rough grooved" and I took out a big gash on my left shin during deads. A week later, doing deads again... first rep of first set and I tear open the quarter sized scab, blood running down my shin. I take a lot fish oil so my blood is a bit thin and I'm trying to just wipe it with my shirt, hoping this isn't going to interfere with my workout (all the while some guy off to the side looking at me with a big "?" on his face). You can see some blood on the sock :)

My shins are nasty- if/when I shave them, they're going to look really nasty. The right leg shows scar after scar over the years.

I could wear "tube socks" just for the deads and powercleans, but my morning workouts are tight on time so it's just a waste.

Edit- OK, looking at the pics, not a "quarter" sized, more like "dime" sized... still hurt/stung like crazy.

I used to have that problem. soccer socks solved it.

Oh yeah- I hear you. I'd have to put them on and then take them off after... I'm just being lazy :)
 
this happened with me for the first time 2day!!!!!

ive never used brand new bars before... no blood but stinging like hell in the shower...

i did feel like a pussy tho........

APT sells deadlift shin guards, these work nice and saves your shins. I think they work great, I have used soccer shin guards. With the soccer shin guard I ripped out the insides so they were closer to my shins and the deadlift bar wouldn't get caught on the guard. I hope this helps.
 
Bar proximity and increased workload

I may be trying too hard to drag the bar up my legs/thighs at times.

For every inch the bar travels away from the body on a deadlift, the workload is increased 50lbs. I'm not by any means a "true" powerlifter but with my background in Kinesiology and mild-moderate perfectionism tendencies, I can sometimes be a real stickler on form.
 
Addidas shin-guards saved my shins !
I train in my garage though........
I might look kinda funny wearing shin guards into a gym huh ?:D
 
Same thing happens to me. I always get to talk to the cute girl working behind the desk and have her "help me" inspect my leg and put on a band aid. ooo la la! Forget shin guards.
 
Yes, I have these marks of pride, too :) What cracks me up the most are the few people who have noticed my shin sores/scars, and actually told me that they stopped doing deadlifts because of them :confused::rolleyes:
