O/T Bartender or Server?

PT just isnt cutting it anymore. Too damn unstable and with the way the economy is, people are not training as much. I was thinking my quickest way to make $$ would be maybe a bartender or server. Problem is I have no expierence at either, but im big and handsome(i hope lol) so I know thats a minimal advantage, but shit, maybe i'd do better at a gay bar or something. I dont know. I figure many of you have done both, so how is it? What are my odds with no expierence? Where to start? What to expect to make $ ? Thanks

you'll make more money as a bartender if you get in a good place and know what you're doing. i bounce at a bar for extra money since im still in school and know the bartenders make a good bit more than the servers. bartending is the way to go...if you're good and at a good bar you can make $500+ a night.

Bartenders make good money in the right bar.......but most need experience......servers do good most places will train you.......bouncing and bodyguard work (what im doing now) and you get paid by the hour......not relying on tips.....the bartender and strippers at one place i work at say things are not that great.

I think, in general, depending on the establishment, bar tenders will tend to be paid more. Even at restaraunts I go to where many servers have been there ten plus years, the bartenders beat them hands down. It depends on the estabishment. In general bar tending positions/shifts are much harder to get without good experience and perhaps a clientele following. A common path may be barback to bartender. At the restaraunt I frequent most often you must start as a server first to have a shot at bartender. These guys never leave so it is difficult to break in.

A job I did part time when I was younger that I made great money at was as a valet. We would make $200 to $350 a night in the good spots. This was twenty five years ago. Good Luck.

I bartended when I went to college. Made a lot of money, working 3 night a week I pulled in close to a grand a week. I was at a good pub with tons of regulars and my bar itself seated over 40 customers around it. You will need to get your bartending cert from classes, you can do it in a week if you go every day for a few hours a day, its simple and fun. Serving/waiter sucks.

So im presuming i'd do a lot better in a nightclub opposed to a fancy restaurant or any restaurant? Do most places want a bartending license?

find a bar that is slow on the weeknights and jumpin on the weekends. that will give you plenty of time to learn drinks. if you find a job and you want some crazy shots or drinks pm me. i bartended for quite a while to make extra money. best thing i learned is change your demeanor towards each customer. learn alot about diffrent types of music. if you can relate to every customer your tips are alot better. also ya gotta flirt with the bigguns as well. hot chicks some times tip really well. other times not so well or a phone number. bigguns tip much better if a nice guy is friendly to them. not trieng to be a dick by saying that but its true.

Ive' served and bartended, I actually still bartend from time to time to fill in. On an average servers make better money hands down! Both have their own perks, but both put good cash in your pocket every night you work. Fastest cash is generally clubs, center of nightlife. But a good resturant allows you to get in and get out, but your generally moving the entire time your there. Servers run and do more busy work than most bartenders. It just comes down to what your wanting to do. My cousins wife is bartending at a new casino around us, she makes around $5,000.00 a month. Which is pretty good and they offer good insurance for them. But she says that the servers BLOW her away with the kind of money that they bring in. It just depends on what your looking for.
