kinda find it ironic. Every time I get a spot on bench, my line has always been "Try not to help me at all, just keep the bar off my neck."

Guess I have the right idea! But I can only imagine how HORRIBLE that accident would be

I used to use suicide grip on bench. I had this happen to me as well when I didn't wrap my thumb around the bar. Thank God I dont press around my neck. It landed on my chest and truly knocked the wind completely out of me. I was working with 315, and Im sure this kid was working with much more.

I also feel bad for the spotter. There is nothing he could have done to prevent this injury. Even if his hands were under the bar, there is no way he's catching that amount of weight before it hits the person.

Hope he recovers quickly!

Espn is reporting it was 275 he dropped on his neck, you would think it would be much higher weight to cause a slip, or maybe he passed out briefly and dropped it, ive seen that happen before a few times

275 lbs is a lot of weight. a lot more than most people can lift. but even if it was just 135 lbs, if that shit lands on your throat it aint gonna be pretty. Falling weight tripples (at least) on impact. a small coin dropped from the empire state building could kill somebody if it landed on their head. science.

If it hit him in the right spot it would be pretty scary.. I was pitching tennis balls to my little brother years ago, and he was swinging with an aluminum bat.. And I got really close, probably like 8 feet away.. And he smoked a line drive right at my throat, and since I was so close I had no time to react.. It definitely hurt, but what was scary was I couldn't breathe for a few seconds - I was trying to but it was like my windpipe was closed off.. So if just a little tennis ball could do that, I bet a loaded barbell could really cut your breathing off in the right spot..

naa these coin scenarios are nothing more than myths.. a penny or dime dropped of a skyscraper would flutter in the wind, and would have no more impact than if you dropped it off the roof of a 1 story house.. those are scenarios of what would happen if there was no air, and things kept accelerating - but when you have air pressure, things don't happen like that.. even a person jumping off a building will reach a maximum speed and stop accelerating before they hit the ground..

HORRIBLE!! any instance when you cannot breath and you are awake is awful. I had an experience once in a fire and it felt just like being underwater. Just recently they were bringing me out of anesthesia and I was awake for I dont know how long and I had someone in my face telling me to breath! I couldnt breath,talk,move my arms, nothing! I thought I was gonna lay there and die.
I hope to god I never drop a bar on my throat.
