I have entered that billfish tourney in the past in Panama City. I used to go out about every six weeks or so in the Gulf. Haven't been in over six years. Most fun I've had is fishing off of Cozumel when on vacations there.
I was mostly trout fishing here in Georgia (mostly stocked) for the last few years but a friend got me back into bass fishing. We fished most Georgia and Alabama lakes, but would also take trips to Texas to fish Lake Fork, and also to California a few times. I kind of dropped out as I was not quiet as "competitive" as this guy where fishing was concerned. I liked to be a bit more relaxed.
Best fishing experience:
I may get some of this wrong its been a few years ago. This same guy found an island (key) off the coast of Sant Simons/Sea Island, in Georgia. I believe. I think the name was raccoon key, they used to advertise in the back of national outdoor magazines.. They had dug channels through this island and I think the intention was to "farm" crab. Anyway they struck fresh water, flooded it, and all these channels through the ten foot high reeds were filled with Bass.
We rented the place, it had one large two story lodge, run on a generator, and on guy who got your boats ready and was also the cook for the huge meals afterward. Back in the reeds were beds for alligators and crocs, some of these were huge, and we were in these 14 ft aluminum boats. They also had a place to shoot pistols that was pretty interesting.
At night we would go out on the dock and sit and drink and catch crabs on strings looking out on the stars over the water. All in all it was a great getaway and we caught hundreds of bass.
