A buddy of mine told me he heard a new study came out showing that tums has caused cancer. Im sure this is bullshit like most studies, but anyone else hear about it? Think its something to worry about, b/c I like taking 2 tums daily to get 1500mg calcium intake(im cheap lol)

There have been several studies done suggesting there may be a link between calcium intake and prostate cancer. A pattern has been identified showing countries where dairy products are widely consumed have a higher overall rate of prostate cancer than those countries where dairy products are less important in the daily diet.

Some researchers say you should only be concerned if your intake from dietary sources and supplements exceeds 2gms/day. Most researchers however do not see the studies to be conclusive enough to recommend that men change their calcium intake.

Rex.

Oh, and regular Tums contain 200mg elemental CA, E-X 300mg, and Ultra 400mg. So its obviously not possible to get 1.5 gms from 2 tabs. One possible mechanism for the prostate cancer link is depletion of vitamin D from higher intakes of CA. Tums does not contain Vitamin D. Milk is obviously traditionally fortified with D.

The tums I use are xtra strengh and contain 750mg calcium carbonate and I take 2 daily for calcuim and get the rest from my multi vit

Yes, I am aware what they contain. Calcium carbonate provides 40% elemental CA. Did you think that was all CA? So, 1500 x 40%= 600mg. Clearly carbonate is not miraculously weightless, and clearly carbonate is not calcium. Calcium carbonate is the chief constituent of limestone BTW. Just a little useless trivia. Many people make the mistake of believing they are taking 1500mg of CA when they are taking 1500mg of calcium carbonate.

Rex.

Have you thought about taking the Viactiv soft calcium chews?

They are and I take this directly off the web site:

Q. How much calcium carbonate is contained in
one VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chew?
A. Each VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chew contains 500 mg of
elemental calcium from 1,250 mg of calcium carbonate.

Q. How well absorbed is the calcium in VIACTIV®
Calcium Soft Chews?
A. Calcium carbonate, nature's most concentrated source of
calcium, delivers 500 mg of elemental calcium in each
VIACTIV® Calcium Soft Chew. The calcium in VIACTIV®
has been clinically demonstrated to be absorbed as well
as the calcium from low-fat (1%) milk.

And now they have a multi vit chew as well.

I know they are supposta be for women, but these things taste pretty darn good, and they are so easy to take, just chew them like a piece of candy then swallow.

I took then for a while, but then quit since I got a kidney stone from too much calcium, lol. Go figure!

Oh, and you can get then at Wally World.

wow.. that was a good refresher course on some chemistry that i forgot about

thank you :)

I'm convinced that EVERYTING eventually 'gives' you cancer. Think about how many supposedly inert agents have been shown to cause cancer in lab rats. It's ridiculous. There's no way around it - avoid the obviously deleterious things that are unhealthy, and that's basically all you can do.

Hell....overeating has been purported to increase one's risk of cancer.
