Had the hotels locked up but finally booked flights today. Doing Bali and Thailand for my birthday end of February.

The Edge - Uluwatu 5 nights
The Viceroy - Ubud 4 nights
Kimpton - Bangkok 3 nights
Six Senses - Ya Noi/Phuket 4 nights

Super pumped. First 3 locations are new for me. Some of you may recall the Six Senses I stayed at a few years ago - it was so dope I felt like doing a repeat to end the trip.

Also first time flying EVA Air and Korean Air. Both supposed to have a nice business class experience. Korean Air still flies a two story 747 so that will be something I haven’t done in like 25 years lol 🤯.

Sounds like a badass trip..and ending at your old stomping grounds at the Six Senses. I can see another blog coming!

You going to have a blast on your b-day and with hardly any cares in the world :)

Boooo go to Iceland

I've stayed at the Six Senses in Yao Noi. Really nice property. I rolled a 4 wheeler on a steep slope there and they were so worried that I hurt myself that they comped a bunch of stuff. Awesome kayaking around the island. Ended up getting smashed with a couple from the UK and enjoying the overnight company of one of their daughters. Really good time.
The jet boat ride from mainland to the island is awesome, too

Make sure to look into Elephant riding and tiger petting while over there in Thailand...Once in a lifetime experiences!

While over in Indonesia, if you have time (5.5hrs from Uluwatu), check out komodo and see those massive dragons!

I was in Uluwatu just 4 months ago. One of my favorite spots in Asia. Will go back for sure. Ulu Active is a decent gym it’s brand new. The waves are a bit strong and you can get by everywhere by scoooter.

I’m going back to Philippines in Feb. to visit more islands mainly Coron

You should never ride an elephant - it’s terrible for them. I spent the day at a true sanctuary in Krabi a few years back. Easily the best experience I’ve had on any of these trips.

I've had elephant experiences in both Asia and Africa...Riding them is not terrible for them at all.

If you've already had an elephant experience of your choice in the past, cool...Enjoy your trip.

Riding elephants is considered poor treatment due to the physical and psychological harm it causes them, as well as the abusive practices often involved in training them for rides. Here are the main reasons:

1. Training Process (Phajaan)

• Many elephants used for riding are subjected to a process known as phajaan or “breaking the spirit.” This involves separating young elephants from their mothers, confining them in small spaces, and using physical punishment and deprivation to make them submissive to humans. This process is deeply traumatic.

2. Physical Harm

• Spinal Damage: An elephant’s spine is not designed to support heavy loads, especially the weight of a saddle and multiple people. Over time, this can lead to chronic pain and spinal injuries.

• Skin Sores: The use of saddles, often ill-fitting, can cause wounds and infections on their skin.

• Joint and Foot Problems: Being forced to carry heavy loads or walk on hard surfaces for extended periods can result in arthritis and other joint issues.

3. Mental Stress

• Elephants are highly intelligent and social animals. Being isolated, overworked, or treated harshly can lead to stress, depression, and abnormal behaviors like rocking or swaying, which indicate mental distress.

4. Deprivation of Natural Behavior

• In the wild, elephants roam vast distances, forage for food, and interact with their social groups. Elephants used for rides are often confined, chained, and deprived of these natural behaviors, leading to a lower quality of life.

5. Illegal Capturing and Conservation Impact

• Many elephants used in the tourism industry are taken from the wild, contributing to the decline of wild elephant populations. This also disrupts elephant family structures and ecosystems.

Ethical Alternatives:

Instead of riding elephants, people are encouraged to visit ethical sanctuaries where they can observe elephants in a natural setting and support their conservation. Look for sanctuaries that do not allow riding, chaining, or performances, and prioritize the well-being of the animals.

What are some of the best things to do in Thailand? Are there a bunch of hiking trails and nature spots I would imagine?

My man, I'm not turning your thread into some activist dos/donts in the animal kingdom debate.

Your google cut/paste is just parrot'ed Peta posted note nonsense...You travel the world to see resorts and food, I travel the world to specifically experience the wildlife, so find it weak for you to try and throw some cut/paste shit in there, that shows absolutely no real experience with these animals!

What'd you spend a few hours to half a day at an elephant sanctuary?! I stayed a week in a worker elephant encampment (no electricity or hot water, living in a hut). This was after spending a year researching the history of the Thailand elephant as well as the jungle layout.

Just for example, your own experience in Thailand (looks like you decided to remove the link to your 3hr petting zoo trip lol) - while they were teaching about how inhumane it is to ride them, they must have told you that in Thailand the elephant is worshiped and all elephants are assigned a Mahout at birth (caregiver). As I witnessed myself with the other camps in Thailand during my travels through the jungle...As soon as you guys leave the Mahout is riding the elephant to/from. African elephants do not have Mahouts.

But hey, let's go horseback riding though, right?! 1000lbs being ridden hard or 13,000lbs casually strolling through the jungle, eating foliage as we go:unsure::rolleyes:

Move on with your thread man.

I posted a ChatGPT response so you don’t try and discredit me. Yes I could have told my personal story of spending a day with the Mahouts where they mentioned several times that riding elephants is terrible. Glad you spent a week there - I’ll take the word of the guys who devote their lives to these animals…

Move onto another thread man.

Depends on where you go - Thailand is fucking huge. There are definitely some sick spots to hike and mountain climb in Krabi.

I don't need to discredit your Peta-speak, your own search engine does that quite easily...Right above your cut/paste chastising about riding them.

Mahouts telling the tourist it's bad for YOU to ride them:LOL:

“Your google cut/paste is just parrot'ed”
🤔

I’m an animal guy so I’m with @slesh here and would much rather observe than ride.

Whatever doesn’t harm the animal for our personal amusement. I’m not a PETA supporter, but agree with not abusing animals.

Everyone has their viewpoints, but I’d much rather hang with animals than people.

Enjoy the trip, dog!
