MY TALE:

Link to what my car looked like. Mine was a white 4 door.

I drove my mom's old 1978 dodge aspen. I began driving it at the age of 16 in 1986. It has the V8 in it, a 318. I thought it was the shit since it had an 8 cylinder in it! I remember taking corners on curvy country roads so fast in it that all 4 hubs caps popped off because it flexed so much. We had some really steep hills too that I would take and the damn thing would go air borne. A few times it slammed down so hard that it bent the gas tank on it.

Somehow it survived until I hydroplaned one night on the highway during a bad rain storm. It had been raining all day and the water had built up in the fast lane, the lane right next to the cement wall on I75. I guess the drains against the wall get clogged up and then rain puddles up. I lost the rear end when it went up on the water and then the front wheels went up too. I made a 90 degree turn going 60 mph and slammed into the cement wall /median. It flipped my car on its top and I proceeded to slide down I75 on the roof of my car! I remember looking out my car window and seeing the start fly by. Sparks were flying everywhere too as the sheet metal slid on the pavement. It went a long way, maybe 100 ft or so before stopping. A nice truck driver came over and helped pull me out of the car. It was totalled of course. I had the car towed home and the next day I got my good car stereo out of it. I had a nice Alpine system and that thing meant the world to me,lol. Then I had to pay a junk yard to come get my car, they wouldnt pay a dime for it. They said there wasnt a bodypanel on it anywhere that wasnt bent. I think I payed them $50.

I drove a 1984 Honda CRX --- actully a pretty cool car....

Yeah, I liked those. I wanted something like that, but ended up with the Mom mobile. Not a lot of sport to mine but it did have a really big back seat and that was real handy on a hot date at the drive in movies! used to keep an old beach towel back there to clean up messes.:D

I drove this bad ass 1998 Chevrolet Camaro, with the Side-skirts, the Rear-skirts, NO 'front-skirts', and T-tops. Not even a Z28 ...

Funniest part of all was that I got it for my 17th (or 18th) birthday, and when we first tried it out in the parking lot at the Chevy dealer in Houston, IT DID NOT EVEN START! .... after 15 minutes of sitting inside this frying vehicle, in 105 degree weather, it's ignition turned on . . . 5 hours later, my dad purchased the vehicle for me.

.. and can you guess what problem persisted until its last day on the streets?

- that POS started 3/4 of the times I put the keys in . . . and there was NO 'insurance' per se through the dealer due to a used vehicle, and so on and so forth.

I learned my lesson!

I worked since I was in 8th grade and bought my first car freshman year a 1979 Camaro and that same year starting restoring a 1972 camaro. I finshed it Soph year it had a 396, 4:10 gear....loved that car!!!!!! Had to sell it when I moved as I had no where to put it....now I replaced it with many other toys and my wife is not liking that I take the whole garage up and her car sits in the weather...

I guess you wanted that card damn bad to buy it when it had that problem when you test drove it!
I once owned a 94 camaro z28. It was a fun car to drive. I only had it for about 2 months though because I fell asleep at the wheel one night on the way home from work and ran off the road. I hit a big tree and bent the frame! yeah, ive totalled 2 cars in my life. This accident I had a bad concussion. The first time in the dodge I suffered a separated shoulder when the car flipped over. the seat belt yanked across my shoulder and tore the ligaments there in the AC joint.

i bought a 76 camaro when i turned 16.....i still miss that car today

99 camaro z28.... damn I miss that car. Speaking of cars not starting when test driving i actually test drove a z28 from downtown houston that caught fire during the test drive lol.

I love those muscle cars. My buddy had a 72 Ford Mustang Mach 1. It had the 351 cleveland in it. That thing was fast too! He ran it to school one day with open headers! When he fired it up in the garage it blew the paint off the ceiling of the garage! It looked like it was snowing inside. Never seen or heard anything like it. Even with the exhaust all hooked up it was loud. I think he had those glass pakced mufflers. We used to joke about the fact that when he was driving and we talked our voices sounded like the cylons on Battlestar Galactica!

I always ran open heads and I always felt horrible when I would come home late and had to drive our quite country road and that sound just travels, but nothing sounds better at a light when you punch it. I ran just above a 10sec qt mile

A 1971 Ford Pinto. I think my parents were trying to kill me. It looked eactly like the one in this pic too. As soon as I saved up $800, I put the money down on a new '73 Triumph. Then I thought I was the shit :p

My Car

A 1972 International Harvester Travel All, I was a bright red, 2 gas tanks. Plenty of room inside for all activities.

Sorry all - but I win!

I worked my ass off for four years to earn enough money to buy a used 1987 Iroc Z-28 for my senior year. The works: T-tops, 5.7L V8, leather seats, 250Z-rated tires, etc.

Bought it with 32k miles on it, and still have it to this day, with 40k miles. 8k miles in 17 years, not bad! My wife hates that this car, which has never seen snow or rain since I've owned it (1992), taking up 1/2 of our garage space and driven only a few times every summer.

The funny part is that due to all the emission laws back then, that huge engine puts out the same horsepower as probably a Honda Accord nowadays. But nothing beats the sound of the exhaust.... a low rumble you can hear blocks away.

LOL. Those looked a lot like the AMC Gremlins. Did Ford ever do that cheap fix to protect the gas tank during rear end collisions? I think it was just a cheap steel plate. Your parents really did have it out for you!

Yeah, the cars back then didnt have much power at all. A friend of mine in high school used to drive his fathers Delorean around (the stainless steel car in "BAck to the Future". Man that thing was a slug. It looked fast though and the girls loved it.

What kinds of "activities" might have happend in that vehicle?

1990 Mustang LX coupe, I would work these horrible summer jobs and just dump all that money into that bucket of bolts, had a 347 stroker in it, heads/intake/ big sloppy cam, everyone at school would look at me when I would roll up and you could hear that car loping, it was fun, but what a money pit, ha.

God, a Delorean! I would have died to drive one of those back then. Though you are right: 0-60 in over 8 seconds! WTF?!
