Curious to see what everyone is feeding there dogs these days. I've been feeding mine Eukanuba puppy food. But I just ran across something that seems to be alittle better and wanted to know if anyone has any experience with it. It's Innova natural food products. www.naturapet.com It's suppossed to be food based of whole and real foods as appossed to by products and what not. By, "by products" I mean powders and things of that nature. thanks

i feed my pit Nutra High Energy. it's got 30%+ protien content and tons of calories. he likes it a lot.

Hey man Eukanuba is high priced crap bro. And Nutro isn't that much better. They are both middle of the road food. Not the worse(Ol'Roy, Pedigree, etc) but nothing to good about them. Innova is up there with the best foods. Its defienetly in the top 5. They have a new line called Innova Evo thats supposed to be really good for your dogs. If you are looking around town for food try also looking at Natural Health food stores. Best foods are:

Timberwolf
Natures Variety(thats what I feed my two pits, along with some eggs or cottage cheese as treats)
Wellness
Innova
Canidae
Solid Gold.

1 and 2 are in there own league and the rest of them are pretty much the same. I would figure out what to buy by whats available and price. Feel free to ask any questions.

Dog chow. $10/ 50lbs

O & M Holistic

Our Victorian Bulldog had severe allergies and was a bit overweight. After following our Vet's advice of cutting her food down to 2 cups per day and giving her antibiotics, we had a 50 lb drowsy, lazy, miserable dog. A friend of mine is a groomer/boarder and recommended this food to us. After 1 week @ 4 cups a day she was back up to 64 lbs (lean, not chubby) and no allergies. That was a year ago. She still weighs the same, still has no allergies and does not have to take any antibiotics! We pay $37 for a 20 lb bag, I know it sounds expensive, but I paid $2,000.00 for the dog and she is a big part of our family. If I'm not going to eat shit, I don't expect anyone in my family to. Here is the nutritional breakdown for you. Hope this helps.

O&M TRIM & ACTIVE is one of the most nutritionally advanced senior dog food formulas today. The addition of an "Whole Food Enzyme Complex" adds a dimension of nutritional support for the older dog.
An animal's regenerative capacity becomes diminished with age. Our use of fresh, whole and nutritionally complete foods as ingredients supply the building blocks for the dog's body to repair, regenerate and rejuvenate. By adding our special proprietary Whole Food Enzyme Complex (EFL-Enzymes For Life), Trim & Active becomes unsurpassed in providing nutritional and antioxidant immune support for senior dogs. EFL also helps to fight arthritis and tests have shown an increase of life expectancy of up to 50%.
Trim & Active will help dogs that suffer from musculo-skeletal problems by reducing inflammation and discomfort, thereby improving mobility and vitality. It also helps with weight adjustment for overweight dogs and in cases involving surgery or trauma, you can expect a reduction in down town and enhanced recovery. O&M encourages you to put your senior dogs on Trim & Active as a means of combating the aging process and other degenerative conditions.
We at O&M provide the very best diet to insure healthful benefits for your very important pet. TRIM & ACTIVE puts the zest back into a dogs life.

This balanced canine formula will satisfy all the nutritional requirements of senior, sedentary and overweight dogs. The feeding information below should be used as a guide. Daily portions will vary according to age, size, temperament, breed, environment, and their activity level. ADULT DOGS: require 1/2 to 3/4 cup for every 20 lb. of body weight. OVERWEIGHT DOGS: 10% less per day until optimum weight is achieved. Use a standard 8 oz. measuring cup. Supply fresh drinking water at all times. Keep in a cool, dry place.

They have other varieties for different age/weight/breed of dogs.

I dont know enough about the Enzyme Complex to talk about it, but here's my take. First Vets generally don't know shit about good dog foods. They are doctors not nutritionist. So I'm glad you didnt follow his advice for long. On the food you are talking about, thats great that it worked out for you and I'm glad you think the way you do about not feeding your family crap but that shit is pretty pricey. I pay 35.00 for a 30lb bag of Natures Variety. One thing to look at all the dog foods is the first 5 contents. None of the first five in O&M are wheat or corn products. That is very good. Most poplar brands have wheat as one of the top 5 because its a cheap filler. The first should always be a meat. Chicken meal is ok, but chicken by product is crap. looks like a very good food for an older dog. i would suggest something else if you have a young or very active dog. Something with a little higher protien.

I agree

that a younger dog might need more protein, there are other varieties from O & M. Here is a link that should help.

**broken link removed**

I believe the adult protein is upped to 25% and puppy might be around 22%.

As far as price, I've spent soooo much more on soooo much less, that saving 10 or 20 bucks every other month is not really worth the time for me to research a new food and ween the dog off of the old one and then deal with the dog having the runs, etc..... As for others, I can't say. I know this stuff is good, no need to reinvent the wheel here.

My dog eats whatever I eat left overs if not I have to make extra. He eats eggs steak, shakes, tuna, and everthing else. MM

haloforpets.com call and ask for Cheryl. Best of show!

The best thing I've seen is actual food. Most say don't do this, but it works. My uncle has had several boxer and his wife would feed them whatever she made for the meal, plus they always had a bowl of dried food sitting out. Many have there opinions on it but these dogs were huge and beautiful. Not fat, 100% muscle. Damn near a 140lb boxer, that's nuts cause he's still hyper as hell. But I can't afford to go that extra bit at the moment. I'm glad there are others that know about the innova and other lines. Thanks for the input.

HBG- something looks different about you avatar, you've changed a bit :D keep up the good work!

Best Feeding

The best dog food as in Kibble is one question. THe best way to feed your dog is B.A.R.F. = Bones And Raw Foods. Not left overs or cooked meats. Natural Raw food. It gets can be expensive depending on the dog. There is a formula/ratio that you take your dogs body weight and that determines how much meat to bones he gets. Along with some natural veggies. I sometimes mix it up for by dogs and give them some raw chicken. I'll give'em each half a chicken and watch them tear it up and play with it. Its a good treat for them.

Curious why raw then cooked? I know a breeder that boils chicken and gives it to them. Also I know most dogs can't handle chicken bones, however this same breeder said that due to the power of a pits mouth it crushes it to the point to where it can't splinter. True or false? Not that the vet knows much on food, they told me the other day that raw meats with give her tape worms?

Haze,

How did you find out that these brands are better??

I have a 13lb Rat Terrier ( don't laugh, she's cute and a house dog! ). I am looking at switching from the Purina Beneful dry and Pedigree canned food.

If you picked one, which would it be?? I am looking at Canidae, Natures Variety or Timberwolf.

Thanks!

Jeremy

Pitbullforum.com

There are a lot of smart people and big breeders on there. There is section just on food.

Those three foods are all great. I'm not sure how much of a different effect they will have on your type of dog.(size, activity, etc.) I dont think you could go wrong with any of them. Availabilty and price is what I would use to determine. (there other good ones I didnt list, Lifes Abundance, Calif. Nat., etc)

As far as B.A.R.F. I've read a ton of times its great to feed boiled chicken and cottage cheese when your dog is sick. Its very easy for them to digest. B.A.R.F. is based on the idea the dogs are "animals" and they are meant to eat raw foods. Not kibble or cooked foods. So the idea is to tailor their diet to a natural form of eating. (thats why if you are going to feed kibble the ones with the most natural ingredients is best, also more expensive) Cooked chicken bones may not break apart because they could be to soft to crumble so your dog could swallow a big chunk. Thats why you dont feed cooked bones. As for the tapeworm, fresh foods man. I thaw the chicken and give it to them right there. nothing gets left in the fridge over night. And I give them a raw egg EOD and Cottage Cheese EOD. No issues about not having a cooked egg.

I give her eggs, veggies, fruit, and even oatmeal everyday when I'm eating the same thing. I just always wonder if doing this often was too much, but I guess not. I'm glad to know that she can handle more, just never wanted to make her sick. As I know she can't handle spices and things like that. Cause someone gave her a sauted steak, and shit shit funny for days. I wish I knew they gave it to her. I can't believe how much she likes fruit though. Bananas, melon, apples, peaches, oranges, and grapes. She even eats cooked broccoli.

I always thought Eukanuba was he best. I am deffinately not 'in the know' on the top if the line pet food but every breeder and every breeder add says thats what they feed their pets. Maybe they just get paid to say that. I just get PurinaOne. Top of the line as far as Super Market pet foods go :D
