On vacation last week, I visited a new gym. Three of them actually but we will get to that later! I normally work out at the same gym at home and do not venture out much, this was my first real experience in years in seeking out a new gym in this country.

At the first gym the lady actually opened the door of the gym as I was getting out of my car and referred my to another gym (World gym) down the street. Ok. Got to the World Gym, (it was labeled "express", a smaller version) and paid the guest fee to work out.

Signs in front of the squat racks etc that read "Please do not load over 300lbs on Barbells" WTF? I've never seen weight limits b4. They referred me to the larger World Gym nearby for the next day which I visited. Same signs! I have never heard of such. Their were couple pretty huge guys working out there so it must not be enforced very well, but I'm just wondering what is going on with these "limits" and do other gyms do the same thing. BTW the gyms were in St. Augustine, Florida.

BTW since my illness I have self imposed limits that make this not a problem for me, so this is more of a question because I just have not seen it b4.

golds in myrtle beach have a sign with a list of rules of which 2 are

no powerlifting
no deadlifting

That is ridiculous! Hopefully that trend doesnt catch on but its a perfect example of why the hard core gyms are dying.

Doesnt deadlifting fall under the category of powerlifting? And you can't squat or bench either? Thats pathetic.

NEVER HEARD OF THAT BEFORE BUT THE LADY AT GOLDS IN ORLANDO OFF 436 I BELIEVE TALKED ME OUT OF TRAINING THERE SO I WENT TO WORLDS DOWN THE STREET...BTW BY FAR THEMOST HARDCORE GYM IVE EVER TRAINED AT IS GAINESVILLE GYM DOWN THE STREET FROM UF FCKN CRAZY GYM STRICTLY FOR THE HARDCORE

HAHAHAHHA, I have signs up in front of my squat racks,

"DO NOT USE IF YOU CAN"T WARM UP WITH 300" "JUST STAY OUT OF THE WAY AND WATCH"

LEG PRESS.........."MINIMUM LOAD 300kgs (660lbs)"

I actually have hooks made for all my weight stacks on machines so you can safely add extra plates for a beter workout! All my cables have been beefed up to handle the extra loads. So far I have been the only one to actually break one cable off of one of my stacks. SO I just had a bigger one made!

My gym is geared around lifters. Very few rules other than the obvious! Towels to be used, put your shit away when done, be respectful of the weak, etc...........! Do not leave the pencil neck under the weight on the bench............................for too long!!

when i first got to school, i went looking for a gym. went to this one place and asked to get a trial run. the 2nd day in, they go to me "we don't allow chalk. and also, if you could refrain from heavy lifting when other people are around, it'd be appreciated. it makes some of the other members uncomfortable" needless to say, i laughed at him and bounced.

Good Gyms are getting hard to find. Best gym I've been to is worlds gym in phoenix off of Bell Rd.

Yes those signs are for show at those to gyms

The guy that owns those two gyms promotes two NPC bodybuilding shows in this area. He's really into the bodybuilding scene. I really think he put those signs up to stop the "punks" from damaging his equipment.
I'm good friends with the guy that owns the gym I go to and he does the same thing. He lets me & my trainer partner lift heavier, and he doesn't have to inforce with any other member. He is just trying to keep the "punks" out, too. I don't blame him. I've rarely ever have to drop weights. But some people do it to get attention. It's the "wannabes" that make the rest of us suffer.

Next step in gyms: "No weightlifting allowed. Cardiotraining only".

LOL

"And no heavy breathing or loud music when doing cardio" ! :p

wow, that's a new one for me too.

A couple gyms in this area do not allow TANK TOPS or SLEEVE LESS shirts...well if you stff would sanitize the pads daily we would not have a bacteria problem...plus the members need to clean with the spray bottle when they are done.

Also, no grunting, and no slamming weights....I never drop the DBs, but I do push the 45lb plates together on the tree so they do not hang near the edge. I was told to not slam the weight....my reponse to that was EAT A DICK FUCK FACE :)

Planet fitness

Damn if you guys went to planet fitness you would shit ur self.
its this BS judgement free zone...haha i dont kno ware to start but..

ok..no squat or power rack, 2 smith machines that bend with 2 plates, db's up to 60. 1 set. 1 bench, 1 incline bench, rest machines only. The gym isint all that big..14,000 members. 10$ per month.
the machines are all garbage, and i could prolly do 100 reps with the heaviest weight on there. The lever arms\and or cables\ for resistance on machines only attatch to 1 side...so that side is slightly heavier then the other.

The bars and weights are lighter then advertised.

no cutoffs, no bandanas, no water bottles, no grunting, no gym bags, NO BODYBUILDERS.

There is a blue siren on the wall(lunk alarm)..that any member or staff member can activate if any of the above rules are violated.

There is planet fitness radio that runs in the gym...talking about Bagal monday, and pizza tuesday etc. and on these days theres unlimitted amounts of pizza and bagals for members. Also on the radio its plays some bs like..."planet fitnees yayda yada, no lunks, no grunts, NO Bodybuilders....."

effen joke..

Planet Fitness

There is Golds where I live that was bought out by Planet Fitness. I was a member there at one time so I went in to check it out. The first thing I noticed was that they got rid of all the dumbbells over 60 lbs. The management told me that if i was looking for a 'serious gym' I should look elsewhere.

That is funny. I would love to see that sign in my gym. I've often thought that in at least some of the racks or smith machines the barbells should have two or three 45's each side as a barrier to entry.

In my regular gym which is as far from hard core as you can get the regular guys/girls are not intimidated at all when we train with heavy weights. If anything they seem pretty amused.

I think you may be right. There were certainly three guys there ready for the stage and one especially was about a 6'1, 6'2 guy that was pretty thick. I really only saw the big guy lift, doing chest, and sure enough he never put over 225 on the bar, but did extremely controlled lifts, eccentric and concentric, lots of time under tension, no lockout. Whatever the gentleman is doing it is certainly working. I have self imposed limits that make this lifting style both appealing and necessary to me until I get a better bill of health. BTW I think the dumbells go up to 120.

I used to travel a good bit more in the states and enjoyed going to different gyms for a break and change of perspective and I didn't realize how much I kinda missed it. That is an interesting city and a beautiful area of the country.

Many years ago b4 weightlifting for the average joe was as accepted as necessary our gym put cardio equipment smack dab in the middle of our free weight room surrounded by weights. I think it was to basically run the weightlifters off more than anything. I took about two months b4 all the pasta munchers started complaining about being leered at and listening to all of our juvenile rants before they moved them back.
