I see more people tear their bicep with this movement. Can someone please explain to me why this movement is needed? Why is this exercise even being performed?

Never had problems with preacher curls unless I get fatigued and overextend.

For me it keeps the muscle contracted through-out the entire lower movement. I agree that preacher curls can be a bit unforgiving. I think it is important that when you perform any sort of movement where the fulcrum is solid and does not move, you have to take extra care due to the stress.

It is effective for me, but I usually drop weight and perform more reps on preacher curls. I save the heavy stuff for barbell curls.

Phil,

Do you think the straightbar is hard on your wrists? Or should you do them anyway? My wrists usually hurt doing them, that's why I ask. (I use the curl bar)

thx

Going light?

So are you saying that lighter weights build more muscle mass then heavier weights? Does a muscle have to be in the pre stretched position to hypertrophy? Why are you doing them if they are unforgiving?

I ADMIT ITS A TERRIFYING EXPERIENCE TO WALK THROUGH OUR HIGH SCHOOL ...

WEIGHT ROOM DURING CONDITIONING AND WATCH KIDS DOING THAT MOVEMENT. THE 'COACH' DOESN'T APPEAR TO HAVE SHARED THE DANGER OF THE EXERCISE WITH THE STUDENTS....BECAUSE I NEARLY FREAK WATCHING.

ANYWAY...MANY PEOPLE GET HURT DOING IT.

Good question!

Hand supinated that far is not natural. IF you ever watch someone curl with a straight bar, their wrists are TRYING REALLY HARD to pronate back. I would never put my wrists in that position. It is uncomfortable just with no weight, holding the wrists like that. A natural hand position is more like a hammer curl.

Thanks. I HATE preacher curls. Once your arms extend beyond that 90 degree point, it's just an accident waiting to happen...

or who said "there are no accidents..."?

What about with a cambered bar? I can't do the straight bar for the reason you mentioned, it feels very uncomfortable just to grip it, so I don't do them. The question about the cambered bar is pertaining to doing them standing and not on a preacher bench.

not tring to be a smart ass but if preachers are bad what about consontration curls where you use your knee just like a preacher granted your body angle is a little diffrent but you are still locked into the movement?!! but that is just me and i'm still tring to get a handle on this whole thing like the rest of you

personally

It's only dumbell curls and hammer curls for me. Haven't done anything else really for years. Preachers and straight bar have never felt comfortable or natural to me.....so as Phil said, "why do them"?

wow thats the same thing jay cutler said to me last weekend about squats, he said he rarely ever goes over 405 on squats and i kinda laughed like no way, and he ask me what i did and i said i did 545 for 10 reps the day before and i said my knees hurt like hell, and then he laughed and said then why do you do that much weight if your knees hurt, your knees should never hurt during squats! so ive switched up some things in my workout that jay suggested and damn i have been sore as hell all week! LOL

Preacher curl, leg extensions, leg curls, hyperextensions, seated tricep extension machines (where you rest your upper arm on the pad), seated calf raise....all bad ideas in my opinion.

Good question

Cambered bar should be fine because the wrist is more pronated. If it is comfortable, then go ahead.

I dont particularly like preacher curls at least free weight preachers anyway. I do however like what Vander had in his last magazine shoot. The sitting down straight bar curls that go down only to your lap. I can feel those, and because they are a lighter weight I can use straight bar. Otherwise, I can't do straight bar heavy weight or my wrists fall the hell off. (Not to mention, That would mean I lose my backup girlfriend for a day )

I always say thoughs isolation exersices are a waste. Preach curls
are the worst. When you extend your arm all the way down, your
not working the muscle, your pulling on the tenden instead far as I'm
conserned. Seated dumbell curls declined for me.

Ever see the guys that race threw these and bounce out of the hole?!?!?!? Makes me cringe.....
