A long illness doesn't sound like drugs to me.
I knew a couple guys in the supp space who tried helping Mike out with jobs throughout the years but said he'd had a bad problem with alcohol and could never hold it together for more than a month at a time and they'd had to part ways shortly after...
I wasn't close with them and I'd been out of the Industry for a while, so if I've heard about it, I'm sure hundreds of others know a lot more than me..
Honestly, I'm surprised Mike lasted this long. Seems he had a legit mental health hurdle, and the "things" used in the 80's (similar with Dearth, maybe Mike Christian, etc.. seems Baker dealt with it on), on top of the anabolics might've tipped things over the edge and accelerated the onset, but then it's a lifetime problem, and if you don't have the tools or people around you constantly, it's easy to fall off that cliff.
Kinda sad, but that's life. At least he didn't end up in prison & had enough people around him to keep him from being homeless-homeless on a skid row somewhere. Should be a reminder that if you know you have mental health issues, that you need to be pro active in keep them in check, be it meds, therapy/counseling, support groups, and friends/family. As the alternative is assisted living, bus passes, and food stamps, and forget about having a gf/wife or a relationship with your children.
