ok so how accurate are those heart-rate monitors on cardio machines (treadmill, elliptical, bike)????? :confused: :confused:

i was doin cardio today and got really freaked out when it said my heart rate was up over 200!!

please tell me im worryin too much about this....cuz im tryin to be really careful about my health and that just freaks me out. theres no way its safe for it to be that high!?

The ones on the machines get beat up so bad it's hard to tell what is right and whats wrong. There are so many chest strap and watch monitors that are much better to use if you truely want to gauge your heart rate. Casio makes quite a few nice pieces.

you are probably young so that would be close to your 100% max...I dont know what would happen but I would imagine it wouldnt be too healthy for you.
 
I can't really tell if you were truely up that high, but if that was very high for you then you would know it. You would have gotten winded, then flush, then passed out. haha But I think you have good sense and could tel if you were pushing it to high, right?

Target Heat Rate Zones
preferred method for calculating target heart rate zones or THR is the Karvonen method. It is also known as the Heart Rate Reserve (HRR) formula. Simply, the Karvonen method uses the following formula to find the appropriate HR for any intensity level. The formula is: HRR x Intensity % + RHR (resting heart rate) .

To calculate your HRR take your Maximum Heart Rate as determined by a test or Estimated Maximum Heart Rate determined by (220-age) and subtract your Resting Heart Rate. In terms of a formula, HRR=MHR or EMHR – RHR.
 
All you had to do was stick your fingers on the side of yoru neck and count your puls and then you would have known if it was right or not. The sensors at my gym are pretty accurate...within 5 heart beats/min
