I was watching the Food Network yesterday.. I believe the name of the show was Food Detectives.. They said that when you eat celery, because of the roughage and fiber content, you actually burn calories.. A typical celery stick is about 8 calories.. But your body burns more than 8 calories to digest the celery stick.. IF this is the case... Then why aren't bodybuilders eating this food like candy during contest prep?????

Probably because we need things of nutritional value! protein also burns calories when digesting it. ;)

I dont know exactly, but I have reason to believe that the body burns calories while digesting any type of food, and because celery contains few (if any) this is basically creating like you said a calorie deficit. I have never heard of a high fiber diet burning more calories, I would be interested to hear more about how that works.

the body does use calories to digest, and like oldfella said while celery is a healthy snack, it has no real nutritional value. So yes it can be used to fill you up, but dont count on too much past that.

Wasn't there some kind of fat a while back that they were using for potato chips that had no calories because the body couldn't digest it. Then it was found to cause anal leakage (somewhat of a deterrent from using the product). It was a little tough selling a pack a Pringles with a free pair of depends.

Please keep in mind that things you see on TV, read in some mags, studies etc were not done with bber's and lifters in mind. They are for sedentary couch dwellers. Those that are basically too lazy to do anything productive in terms of exercise. So while what they say may be true it does not apply to us. I cannot tell you how many customers of my gym, most of them women, get sucked in to these fad diets. I caution them when they bring them up to me and tell them they will most likely get sick on these diets. They should follow some sound nutrition advice that I generally give to them. But they are convinced that what I tell them will not work but what Dr. Zuess tells them will. I usually tell them they will feel quite ill in around ten days. Sure enough they come in telling me they have been sick. They then apply the nutrition I basically outlined to them and OMG, I have never felt better, must be the diet!!! I usually shake my head and tell them.........NAH, can't be, Dr. Zuess said the other one was better!

Then I quickly go into the back room and pull the pins out of those voodoo dolls of them I made!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA and they feel much better then!!

fad diets crack me up. i knew this girl who went on the 'grape diet' which essentially says you can eat as many grapes as you want over the next 7-14 days, but nothing else and you will lose 10 lbs. I told her it as a dumb way to go about losing weight but my opinions apparently held no merit. well she took this concept to the absolute extreme and ended up eating so many grapes she gained a lb at the end of 2 weeks. she told me about it, i laughed out loud at her, and, needless to say, we don't talk anymore.

Bad marketing; if they gave corks instead the product would be a hit

There is a grape fast where you eat 1 lbs of grapes each day and add a pound every day (i.e. day 3 = 3 pounds of grapes, day 6 = 6 pounds of grapes.) But that is a fast for health reasons... not supposed to be a fad diet for losing weight.

Wouldn't be interesting to make a huge wheel (like the Wheel of Fortune) full of odd foods and practices , have contestants spin the wheel three times, and run a PR campaign trying to get people to combine those three things for a their new fad diet? You could easily prove how people will believe anything if it helps them lose weight while sitting on their ass. Well, I guess that's already been proven.

yes it was marketed under the trade name Olestra - it was a concoction of some fatty acids and some sugars (at least i read that). the result was a fat that was too large to be digested, so you would just crap it out.

Dr. Michael Colgan in his 1993 book 'Optimum Sports Nutrition' talks about Olestra so its not something new. It just takes the FDA years to allow anything that might actually improve health. Now of course if it were an experimental drug some pharmaceutical company would make some pay offs and the drug would be approved in less than a month with NO studies or tests

He is correct though. You must chew VERY aggressively to burn more than you take in but celery has little impact on you, or any one in fact.

absolutely works.

try this for a week to lose some fat quickly...=

6 meals per day, 2 grams protein per lb body weight spread evenly over the meals. no extra fats or carbs. with your protein at every meal, consume a huge amount of fibrous vegetables. Borccoli, celery, green onion, onion, bellpepper, cucumber..etc etc.

the key is to eat ALOT of fresh raw veggies at EVERY meal. And i mean ALOT.

see the results for yourself.

ive heard the same theory about celery

Let me throw in my two cents here..

Celery could be some good stuff when your dieting.. Not as part of your prep or diet but as a food you can eat late at night when your struggling during your diet.

Celery is crunchy and has a salty taste. For some reason when im dieting hard, my body craves crunchy things like chips or prezzles or peanuts..I crave something small that i can crunch on and chew on that seems to be filling.. I usually just chew gum. but anyways...

Im 10 weeks out and in full contest mode. No way in hell im going to eat the chips, prezzles or peanuts but the celery might tempt me.. especially after reading this!

So you've done that before?

What was your diet like before you did it?
