This topic eats away at me the more I read different bodybuilding boards. And no, this is not directed at this forum alone, but bodybuilding boards in general.
Why is it that people are so intolerant to the so-called "average joe" in the gym? Here are some common examples and things I see being typed on the bb forums.
1) everyone goes to the gym to socialize.. They sit there forever and talk to their friends and not work out.
Q: if I goto a movie theater and decide to make out with my girlfriend instead of watching the movie, would you be offended too? If I talk out loud at a baseball game with my buddy about cooking, would you be bothered?
2) Everyone is dressed like they are going out at the gym. THe girls wear tight shit and the guys all think they are bad ass.
Q: Some people like to look presentable in public. Why does it bother you so much? just because some of us likes to wear rags to the gym and workout like animals, doesn't mean everyone else have to have the same intensity.
3) People have horrible form and they don't workout hard at all..
Q: People have different priorities in their lives. Not everyone in the gym is trying to have 20" arms. Some are there to relax, and some are there to take off a little tension.
4) People are intimidated by me. And those who say they don't like me this big, are just jealous.
Q: Why would anyone be intimidated by someone in the gym? it's a public place and this is a civilized society. Are you trying to create an issue out of this on purpose? And why does everyone who doesn't want to be big, have to be jealous? i don't get it. Maybe they don't want to be that big; are we not using that as an excuse to comfort ourselves?
All these typical things I see constantly posted, and I am not sure if they are being posted in self-denial, or people really see those as legit claims... It's little wonder bodybuilders get the "arrogance" tag, and it's little wonder that the "others" have a bad opinion of bodybuilders in general.. I think sometimes all of us have to stop and understand that physical prowess isn't the only thing there is in this world to be great at.. There are many people who come up short against us in the gym, TRUE... But in other areas of life, we would come awefully short against the other professionals.. Would we want to be treated like ignorant fucks? i don't think so..
I guess i just wish more of us are more tolerant to the avg people in the gym either just starting to workout or are a work in progress with a long way to go. It's sad to see that some people think they are the kings of the gyms and everyone else is either intimidated or jealous.
