seriously why eat meat if you can mix up a quick protien shake instead its cheaper better protien, no fat. i get asked this alot and i dont know the answer i would like to kow why you cant just do this.

My tummy gets wrecked if I get all my protein from powder :( I have to mix in some whole foods. Some bodybuilders will only eat whole foods precontest. No powder. Don't have an answer, but the majority of my meals are protein powder, oats, and olive oil mixed.

if i remeber correctly i heard that if you just stay on powder it might eat up some muscle....need some solid foods to prevent muscle breakdown,,,, i red somewhere that this affected marcus ruhl at the olympia, his inner chest was eaten away a little due to powder only just before the show..... i could be wrong but i think i red something like that

i'm not sure if some one can point out an obvious reason why besides indigestion problems, I can tell you righht now 90% of my protein unfourtunetly comes from whey. I have about 12-15 scoops of whey per day easy. and maybe 2 other meals are from whole food, usually some thing like fish and chicken or fish and eggs. some days if im lucky its fish/eggs/chicken, and a lot of whey. regardless i have more whey then I would like to admit but my progress is amazing so I cannot complain about any thing.

Surely you can't believe that!

personally ithink protein is protein doesnt matter where it comes from... 4 out of my six meals are protein powders..
i need the two meals as solids just to keep me less hungry

When bulking my gains are better when I eat solid foods, but when cutting my waist is smaller when I use more powders.

I asked this particular question some days ago on intensemuscle too.

Some people said whole food has better amino acid profiles (which I highly doubt)

Then the first to the point reply was that whole food (lets take meat for example) will stoke up your metabolism more than protein powder which actually makes sense since it also volumizes more in your stomach.

Other than this argument, I still have yet to hear good arguments for whole food over whey powder

Diversity, my friend. Af course that you can go just for shakes, but what about if you feel like eating some solid food? BB is a way of life. How someones life would be having to drink shakes all the way?:)

A lot more comfortable and time saving than cooking all day :D

Do you feel your progess is better than ever with a predominantly whey diet over whole foods?

Aminos are aminos, what does it matter what the source, as long as it is quality?

As long as your digestive track is healthy and you are satiated and content, you can get all of your protein from powder and just eat your carbs and fats to stay full.

More than 1 way to skin a cat.

I pretty much eat along the lines of what Dave mentioned, 2 food meals, sometimes even only 1 if it's a big one and then the rest is powder, though I prefer a blend (milk, egg, whey).

Whole food is better but some people can hack just powders. I believe the metabolism point. You stay leaner when your body has to burn calories digesting and processing real food. I also thing the body needs real food to keep the digestive track normal and operating cleanly, Of course there are those rare individuals that can do anything. Whole food for me and two XXX shakes a day. Adjust the food around the shake protein and I'm good. I'm just an average guy though(maybe below).:(

I do the same thing. Its just too big a pain in the ass to cook chicken all day long, or turkey, or beef. So I guess convenience is a factor here also.

Gastric emptying of liquids is faster than solids. Even if you add additional macronutrients, you may still feel hunger faster than when you consume whole food meals. If this is the case, then add more volume of liquid.

P.s. Phil and I have talked about this before. He primarily gets all his protein from powders and liquid aminos. Then again. He is a freak of nature. hahaha

littlemack, if Phil eats just what you said, he must be pretty lean all the time then. Is he or are you not near him to see?

I wish he'd get back into it. Who says he wouldn't stage a better body? He's better than he was in 95 so the results would be, too. I still say hit the Masters O or something one time and wreck it and be gone with the glory and shit that he'd get.

Not close by to tell unfortunately :(
Those I've seen post on here who train at his gym say he is very lean. In fact, I've been told he's never been over 10% bf! Well, maybe that time he was breast fed, but you can't really count that. ;)

I agree. If Philly had continued, he would have been a force to reckon with. He has the science perfected and could blow up eating grape fruit seeds. I predict we would have seen him close to 300lbs and lean. He was working on 285 lean and knowing Phil, he would have blown past that and added another 15 lbs chasing down RC. I'm probably saying all that b/c he's a friend, but I can also tell you as his friend I am glad he's retired and no longer chasing those silly dreams.

It makes sense that while bulking Whole food would be a bit better cuz of the extra calories, (red meat has fat etc..). Otherwise I can't seem to think of a reason. No way it's going to eat up muscle that's just stupid. I prefer whole food when dieting because the body has to work a bit harder to break down whole food so your metabolism will be working better than doing a shake. That's the only real benefit I can think of. That and I'd be starving all the time if I only did shakes.
