Was hoping to find some answers on this one or if anyone has heard of this??? I'm billetting a Russian fighter for an Grappling tournament we have this weekend and we got into talking about training and Sambo vs Jits etc, etc picking each others brain, and I told him about how I'm going to train to make 280lbs as lean and maintable as I can and drop fifteen in water before fights/comps. He then told me in Russia most fighters don't even lift weights anymore. They strap weight vests starting at 40lbs up, and that's it???? They wear it morning noon and night during all there training and during there rest. He told me that training weights was useless for fighting, but I sure as f#ck look better with my shirt off hahhaa. Anyways I was curious if this holds any scientific merrit at all, cause I sure as hell don't get it. If it does maybe it's worth it to throw one on while I'm in my high volume training mode. Also I asked if I could just wear while training jits and he said you have to wear all the time for your body to adapt. call me crazy I don't worry walk around everyday with a freaking weight vest on if it don't work?????

I'd say it makes some sense, but not completely. Think about it, strength equals power, power crushes faces, breaks bones, and over powers people. So it has it's place, the goal is to find a way to utilize everything and set it to work for you!

I do understand how this could help with size and strength but I don't understand how these guys use this to gain size????

This seems to be overloading the CNS plus increasing the concentration of cortisol as the body is in permanent stress.

I dont think we are talking about a 250lbs vest :p

They are great for pull ups. Try doing a couple of push ups you will gain size I would have purchased one myself by now if they were'nt so expensive a vest which you can increase fron 2 lbs to 100 lbs cost almost $400.00 USD

Good for fighters..........

In theory it sounds good for a fighter. Constantly carrying around an extra 40-50 pounds while you run grappel, train. Then come fight day you cut some weight, plus lose the vest. You were training as a 300#, but on fight night you are only carrying around 240 on your frame. I think there could be some benifit. I don't know????

there actualy very effective for fighters. if you wear the constantly when you step in the ring your body is used to being much heavier. heavy wieght in your gloves when you are hitting the bag as well. biggest downside is lack of control. once you get used to lugging that wieght around then take it off you speed is way diffrent. you really dont need to go much over fourty lbs in a vest though.

fourty is fine and will suit you. i have heard of a few people going up to ninety. dont know why you would want to go that high though.

does 40 lbs of fat as a spare tire count?

lol no becouse you are tricking your body into a higher wieght class than can be taken off any time. as opposed to dieting and hard work over a time period.:D

This makes alot of sense, you cant get more sport specific than moving your own body with added resistance (weight)...think about it...what is more sport specific for a weightlifter to train than to lift more weight?

well for someone in sport such as combat fighting doing your actual sport with added resistance ie grappling, judo, boxing muay thai, with extra body weight is as specific as you can get, there are no machines/weights that can mimic your actual sport movements more accuarately than doing it your self with added resistence

this will increase your conditioning, agaility, speed, balance and power while performing sport specific movements

Could you ask your fighter how they pad the vests to limit injuries for thier training partner? Or is there a specific brand or something that allowes them to train without injury. The weight vests here in US are full of lead weights and are dangerous for the fighter and thier training partners, if one was to sprawl on someone it'd be lights out for the person shooting.

True, but there's nothing really sport specific about a ring fighter carrying around a spare tire for an entire day to gain size, which I THOUGHT was the main point in this post.

It sounds like your legs will get a huge endurance training effect, but you'll be burning so many calories lugging this thing around that you will definitely NOT be gaining any significant muscle.

The best tried and true way to gain weight is lots of food, and heavy squats and deadlifts. The formula has been the same for years and still works.

my only issue would be to actually train with it as far as grappling is concerned as it can throw your natural technique off

Fedor Emelianenko stated in an interview that he no longer weight trains either.

Well from a dynamic correspondance standpoint, yes, but also if you were performing resistence sport training, ie grappling, etc with added bodyweight and an increase in calories it would lead to an increase in muscle mass, albeit not necessarily amounts that one would experience say bodybuilding, but yes it would.

Think of it as fighting in a suit of armour, how strong you would have to have been to pimp smack someone upside the head with a mace wearing full plate steel. I doubt those guys went home after a hard days slaughtering and started benching 3-4 buxom wenches before settling down to a flagon of mead and a side of pig.

I'd imagine vest wearers dynamic strength will be far higher than a BB, but their strength in BB lifts will be less. As for size, eat enough and your body will quickly build up to the musculature needed to carry around the vest.

All depends on what your goals are really.
