Oats?????

OK , so we know that white rice is more starchy than brown rice of oatmeal and that white potatos are also more starchy than sweet potatos.

now at what point are starchy carbs bad or better than the less starchy carbs??

lol .......you know, in the GRAND scheme of things
this all means dick.....the "strachyness"lol, of a carb means
so little when it comes down to what WE, as bodybuilders need them for

this is all blown way out.....its comical;

Whole grain oats contain seven B vitamins, vitamin E, and nine minerals, including iron and calcium. The quality and quantity of the protein in oats is far superior to that of wheat and most other grains. One ounce of oats has TWICE the protein of wheat or corn flakes. But the most important nutritional advantages are the soluable fiber and the GLA (gamma linoleic acid).
Oats has a Low GI of 51. To answer the question, yes it is a starchy carbs but a good carbs I must say.

thank you for your expertice Chef
i was waiting for you to chime

:D

I prefer my oats cooked or blended up in a shake. I don't run into digestive problems when eaten this way as opposed to raw/soaked in a shaker cup with some whey.

Rice is my main carb source, however. :)

I can't handle much other than oats...get about 1/2 cup in the morning and that's my carbs for the day...ANY more and I start getting fat...exception is every 3-4 days I bring in a lil waxy maize (20 grams) post training and that's it....eating like this has kept my bodyfat comfortable (265 ish) where 2-300 grams a day put me well over a fat and sloppy 300 lbs..I've also noticed I have to cut back if I use any other carb source....oats are perfec for me lol.

whats your body fat % ? i cant imagine anyone getting fat from only 200g of carbs if training

I diet with 200-250g of carbs...that sucks! (I'm about 220 4.5 weeks out) Generally those carbs happen to be oats or oatbran. A simple trick to dress oats or oatbran up is instead of using water make sugar free/relatively calore free (maybe 5 cals) walmart brand apple juice crystal light knock off, and use that as the water....little cinnamon, stevia mmmm good.....and unless i'm a week out I throw sugar free syrup and/or sugar free jelly on it. I can eat it all day. Cups and cups of it.

No worries mate. Knew you were waiting for me to chime in before it turn ugly. :p

AAWWW fuck it , I have enough trouble getting my protein and fats right , I'll just stick with those and forget the carbs.

Going on a meat diet , maybe a hand full or Oreo cookies once a week:D

Actually I think this would work well:
Get your proteins and fats right, then once or twice a week eat 200-300 grams carbs from Oreos. Other then that only vegis for carbs.
I may have to try this for a few weeks

Jasmine rice fukking rocks. I have no idea why people are obsessed on forcing themselves to eat brown rice. Unless you are lacking in B vitmains or fiber, then there is no benefit to brown over white rice. If you are not getting enough fiber in your diet, then yes, brown would be helpful. But this is only the case if you are truly dependant on only brown rice (or oats or any 1 item) as your true source of fiber. People should not only be getting their fiber from grains, oats, breads, but also vegetables, fruits, nuts, etc. Therefore, if you are lacking, and for some reason rice is your only dependant carb source, brown rice would be preferred.

That being said, if you are getting fiber from other sources and in no need to add in extra, then go with whatever tastes better....which is usually white for most.

I don't know very many people who are deficient in B-vitamins, especially bodybuilders. So this is a moot point to choose one over the other.

There are other very small differences, but they are very minor.

This being stated, i'm not saying one is better than the other, they can both be implemented into any diet. I just think some people are too obsessed in thinking that only brown rice should be eaten and not white, and thus feel like they need to force themselves to slop it down. There have been quite a few ripped physiques that used white rice in there prep, so this is a non-issue as well as far as conditioning goes....for most.

Alan Aragon has posted this in the past as well too.

Re: brown rice vs white, technically, brown rice would be a slightly inferior choice to white rice from the standpoint of nutrient bioavailability & nitrogen retention.

Comparison of the nutritional value between brown rice and white rice

Callegaro Mda D, Tirapegui J. Arq Gastroenterol. 1996 Oct-Dec;33(4):225-31.

Cereals are considered an important source of nutrients both in human and animal nourishment. In this paper nutritional value of brown rice is compared to that of white rice in relation to nutrients. Results show that despite higher nutrients contents of brown rice compared to white rice, experimental data does not provide evidence that the brown rice diet is better than the diet based on white rice. Possible antinutritional factors present in brown rice have adverse effects on bioavailability of this cereal nutrients.

Effects of brown rice on apparent digestibility and balance of nutrients in young men on low protein diets

J Nutr Sci Vitaminol (Tokyo). 1987 Jun;33(3):207-18. .Miyoshi H, Okuda T, Okuda K, Koishi H.

The effect of brown rice with low protein intake was studied in five healthy young men. Feces were weighed, the digestibility of nutrients was determined, and blood tests were made. Each subject followed a diet consisting mainly of polished rice for 14 days and one consisting mainly of brown rice for 8 days. Both diets contained 0.5 g protein per kg of body weight. The brown rice diet had 3 times as much dietary fiber as the polished rice diet. On the brown rice diet, fecal weight increased, and apparent digestibility of energy, protein, and fat decreased, as did the absorption rates of Na, K, and P. The nitrogen balance was negative on both diets, but more negative on the brown rice diet. The phosphorus balance on the brown rice diet was significantly negative, but other minerals were not affected by the diet. The levels of cholesterol and minerals in the plasma were not significantly different on the polished rice diet and the brown rice diet. Comparing these results with data on standard protein intake (Miyoshi, H. et al (1986) J. Nutr. Sci. Vitaminol., 32, 581-589.), we concluded that brown rice reduced protein digestibility and nitrogen balance.

I know some who think GI means nothing...and if one is "refeeding" it may be beneficial to have high gi carbs...but part of the reason I'm able to get away with so many carbs while dieting is I eat all low glycemic carbs....because I love jasmine rice....but during the offseason as it has the highest GI of almost all rice..more so than regular white rice...it's why it sticks together...all the starch.

ahh the stickiness is what makes it so delicious though.. I just discovered jasmine rice and it makes the rice cooker i got 5 years ago completely worth holding onto.

i stopped eating oats because they stick to my teeth, rice atleast won't make you look funny having oats stuck to your teeth...cooking them may be the way to go however, I only eat mine raw.
