I have for a long time had a very hard time sleeping well (averaging 3-5 broken hours) and had begun to get rather depressed. My current situation did not help, but the more I thought about it, the more it seemed that my restless mind, and consequently restless sleep was creating a chemical problem. You can by force of will keep your chin up, but you cannot will a proper chemical balance into existence.
A friend of mine is enduring a similar situation and had similar symptoms. He mentioned 5-HTP, a serotonin precursor. As I examined my symptoms I appeared to be serotonin deprived as well. Low serotonin makes it hard to sleep, and the less sleep you have the less serotonin is available. I found that at night walking to the convenience store I could not walk a straight line anymore. This was not good.
After only one day of using 5-HTP I felt better and slept well. Now, a week later, I am back to my old self. Positive, much more energy, no dark thoughts.
I use 100mg before bed on an empty stomach and 100mg at 9:30 AM on an empty stomach. The results have been really great and I recommend this simple solution for anyone who thinks they might be suffering similar symptoms.
At night I add melatonin and sometimes valerian root as well.
