Naprosim works best for me - don't remember "trade" name.

swelling

i dont know how this info relates to your injury but my orthopedic presribed 3 800mg motrin 3 times per day to keep swelling down on my knee before my knee scope.

Both agents are NSAIDS (non-steroidal anti-inflammatories so both will reduce swelling. The Aleve (naproxen sodium) has a longer half life so has to be dosed less frequently (BID) versus the Motrin (ibuprofen) (TID).

Hope this helps.

thanks guys . i been using the motrin at 800 at a time about 3 times a day.

I was too lazy to go look in my medicine cabinet.

Naproxen sodium (Naprosim - trade name) used to be prescription only.

Aren't both of them hard on your liver? I know the ibuprofen is.

Even tylenol (acetomenephin) is hard in the liver. I think Naproxen and Ibuprofen are tougher on the stomach.

BTW Naproxen is Aleve.

yup

mike your 100 percent correct after a while 800mg at 3 times per day motrin can wear on your stomach, doc gave me a new script called bextra but it is very expensive, He gave me a bunch of free samples/

Tylenol (acetominophen) is hepatotoxic. In fact even at 4 grams per day you can see elevations in liver enzymes. 1 Extra Strength Tylenol is 1 gram, so it is easy to get into the danger zone. Add gear on top of that or alcohol and it spells trouble.

NSAIDS (ibuprofen, naproxen sodium, aspirin, Cox II inhibitors, etc) can cause stomach ulcers and should be taken with food if you are sensitive and avoid citrus juice if you can help it.

BTW, I never take Tylenol while on. Also, be careful of a lot of cold medications that contain Tylenol. Nytol contains 1 gram per dose. I just talked to a pharmacist friend of mine at UTMB and they admitted a 16 year old girl who had been binge drinking. TO avoid a hangover she took some Tylenol. She showed up in the ER with a fulminant hepatic event and eventually had to have a liver transplant.

Anyway, stick with the NSAIDS - reduce swelling, provide peripheral analgesia (pain relief), anti-pyretic (fever reducing) and won't kill ya.

what about...

kidney stress form NSAIDs like ibprofen, Ive heard that these put alot of stresss on your kidneys for long durations
curious

This can be true. However, it is usually seen in renally impaired people or after high dose/long duration of use. Normally you would not really have to worry about this. If you need to use them chronically, then use a Cox II inhibitor like Celebrex.

Naproxen Sodium

Naprosim can also do a number on platlets. I was on prescription strenght for awhile and started geting bruises on my legs. Anything I lightly bumped caused a nasty bruise. The kind that turns blue green.

THen I started having blood vesels in my left hand break. I had one break just by putting the key in the lock and unlocking the door.

Stopped taking it as soon as we were able to make an association. Has never happened again.

Naproxen made my urine burn... honest to god... although anti-inflammatories never help pain with me anyhow.

my wife had some celebrex 200mgs leftover from when she had broke her legg. i took one and in about 30 min my swelling went way down and no pain. its been going on 2 weeks now and i just started working calves this past friday. swellls some when i been on it all day but the celebrex takes it back down. i still put a ice pack on it at nite and keep it wrap most of the day. maybe in another week it will be ok. am going to try hack squats tuesday and calves again so we will see.
thanks
oh i sprang it stepping off the steps and not looking where i was going and folded my foot to the side completely side ways.

yeah, I should have mentioned that NSAIDS will inhibit platelet aggregation which mean increased protime (increased clotting time). Usually not a big deal unless you are going in for surgery or get a bad cut.

Haha. Crazy. I have sprained both ankles in total three times over the last three months due to high AI usage. Needless to say I can give real world experience on this issue.

Tried them all for this exact reason and personally Advil was the best. The Advil gel tabs worked the best and the longest with minimal upset stomach.

Hope that helps and hope you get to feeling better. Keep that ankle elevated. Trust me it works.

Good to know.I always was worried about using motrin 800 cause I had heard of kidney issues.

wow this is an oldie, 2004.

Would not really have to worry about liver or kidney issues unless you decided to down a whole bottle, you will defntly end up in the ICU if you are lucky.

worried about sides
