Anybody here take allergy shots ??

I've had seasonal allergies my whole life , living in the deep south the spring and fall here is very "wide" meening that it can be hot for months then get cool for a couple week then hot again and do this for months , this time of year always tears me up with allergies. Also it seems that each year it gets worse lasteing longer and the symtoms stronger and stronger.

I've been feeling like hammered dog shit the past week so bad I thought I was getting the flu ,this is the second time this fall I was able tos scronge up 2 bottles of "Solu-Cortef" (Hydrocortisone Sodium Succinate 100mg each) that was about expire and gave my self a shot lastnight about 10:00pm , figuring that it it was allergies that it would help and if it was the flu it would not , well this AM i feel much better still snotty but no fever and much less head pressure.

I'm wondering if it would be worth the time and money to get started on allergy shots , my mother swears that her two brothes took them for years and worked great the whole time and even years afterward , but they all lived in So-Cal at that time not in the jungles of south Louisiana.

I'm looking into a couple differant options but some seem kinda hit and miss. My sinuses are pretty fucked up , my nose has been broke a couple times and I used nasal spray for years. Things like animals don't generaly bother me but people who drown their pets with smell good does , also people who where alot of perfume will set off a sneezing fit follwed by several days of stuffy nose , but mostly its the weather and I guess pollen , any sudden change set it off till the weather evens out but down here its alway changing.

any of you bro have any direction or advise.

I got approximately 12 shots/wk from age 13-15. I can't say it did much of anything other than get me over my fear of needles. Cutting my wheat and dairy products does seem to minimize my allergies as an adult though.

Cortisone shots cannot be taken on a regular basis. With that being said, the next 2 best options are either a prednisone shot or you can get epinephrine shots both from the doctor.

I was on allergy shots from about the age of 10 until I was 17. The only reason I got off them was because I was going into the army. Believe it or not, allergy shots work wonders. I can't remember the type of doctor I went to but they also treat people with asthma. I was supposed to only be on them for maybe a few years at most, but for whatever reason my body was not becoming "immune" to all the shit I was allergic to, but suprisingly after quiting cold turkey (b/c I had to) my body reacted pretty well to the seasonal changes. I had a hard time this last spring tho, seemed like nothing over the counter would work for me other than clariten and it only helped a little. Basically the best advice I have for you is to go see your doctor and they should be able to refer you to the right type of doctor that handles this stuff.

I forgot to mention this. When you go get tested for allergies (I'm assuming they will test you) they are going to test you for pretty much everything that you are most likely allergic to. The way they did this for me was they simply inject tiny amounts of each substance just under your skin (you'll have prob. about 20 or even more injection spots on your back) in rows and columns...then they'll waite a set amount of time and see which ones you reacted to and which ones you didn't. Obviously the ones that are red and inflamed are the ones you are allergic to.
The doc will next set up an injection schedule (typically you will get the shots done at your regular doctors office). Initially I went twice a week for so long, then once a week for so long, then every other week for so long...etc. Each shot is not the same substance by the way. One shot will be say grass and weeds and the next one might something else you are allergic to. Point being, they are trying to make your body used to fighting off those substances in a more efficient manner (i.e. by not making you feel like shit in the process). Basically you should eventually become immune or less reactive to allergens.

I used to have allergies so severe that it would almost cripple me during the peak of the allergy season which is twice a year for me and lasts for approximately 2-3 months (half the year). Nasal steroids (Flonase) erradicated my symptoms for the most part but I don't think that stuff is very good for you. I fimally decided to start taking allergy shots a few years back. I took them for almost 2 years and had great success. My allergies have been eliminated to about 1/5 of what they used to be and now can be controlled by an occasional benadryl during the worst part of the allergy season.

I have also found that when I am on cycle during allergy season.....almost no allergies what so ever! completely gone for the most part. has anyone else ever experienced this?

This past spring I was on a pretty stout cycle and my allergies were a little less than what they normaly are but I also took alot better care to protect myself when cutting the grass , getting in the attic and so on so I can't say that the gear helped , I think in most cases I think that AAS reduces your immune system.

The shot of cortisone diden't do shit for me , i'm thinking that this may be a cold this go round as the wife is now complaining of some nasal congestion

I took them for a couple years in high school and they were great. I haven't even thought about allergies since then. Completely eradicated them, except for a few days in the spring.

I tried them as a kid and they helped a bit. Stopped in my late teens. I started them again in my late 20's. They didn't help in the least. I stayed on them for a year before giving up.

FYI. I started Astapro nasal spray and it basically stopped my allerigies. The shit works great for me.

I had them every two weeks from about the age of 6 until 13 or 14. Whatever my doctor was using worked wonders, better than any prescription pill. Sucked getting up at 3am to go (he only operated between 5am-9am). Old school guy. He had whatever it was made for him.

Sadly he passed away about 10 years ago. I've never found relief like that after.
