Anyone Else Hate the Blinking?

Each time I scroll down from the very top of the page, I see the repeating banners (there's red ones with a tank top guy, and a white one with blue and red) and my first thought is each is only one image, but my computer is too damn slow to match the load time and my computer starts flunking up cuz I'm scrolling too fast. . .oh wait, it's just repetitive ads.

Not a complaint.

They don't bother me one bit. It's not like we own stock in this site. They can do whatever they want. The value in the information here is what I care about.

Successful marketing requires testing. If the sales suddenly begin to drop for the companies with the "obnoxious" banners then I guarantee you they will be modified. If sales increase then it is serving its purpose.

Amazing what some people will bitch about.

I'd pay too, just to keep this board from getting like others I used to visit!

yeah, they could call it the "riff raff fee". Sorta like a high class strip club charging a $20 cover.

There are two options that I see:

1. members pay membership fees to come to the site, and then there won't be a need for sponsors. How many of you are willing to pay that??

2. leave if you don't like it. Noone is putting a gun to your head to be here.

Part of business is being criticized, just like everything else in the world when people see crap like this they will react. just like greed in government. I was simply stating my opinion and im not surprised many other people don't like it either. Did they really pay that much more to make it worth annoying your members. Do what you like but dont get all butt hurt when someone voices an opinion about a seemingly bad decision.

most people would pay for access to this site fyi, i know I would. No need to be a slave to sponsors.

I bet you guys would be fine if it was Blinking "FREE HGH" or "FREE SAMPLES"
:D

LOL Where is that one located!!!:D

I say make everyone pay a small fee for the year... It would weed out the serious from the non serious members.

Some other options to consider Big A (seriously - not trying to be a dick at all):

3. Recognize that perhaps the complaints might indicate that you're doing the top sponsor a disservice if the banners are indeed annoying.

4. Consider another means to highlight the primary / top end sponsors. I don't know the details of vBulletin (or the version you're using here), but some sites will:

-Include ad's placed between posts w/in threads. These always jump out a me. Higher paying sponsors could get this or at least have their banner included more frequently.

-Banner SIZE (rather than number) can have the effect of prioritizing a particular sponsor (e.g., a banner that spans the page is another way to make that sponsor more prominent compared to the smaller 3 or 4 to a page banners).

-Including a SUB-Forum within the Sponsor's forum for higher paying sponsor's would give them priority.

-Cross-Stickying Sponsor Sub-forums to other forums would give them more visibility.

-Then there are more effortful ways to advertise like holding contests on the site with sponsors giving away prizes, having featured sponsors (like featured members) at the top of the page, and things similar to what you do with the PM's r.e. synthetek products (and other stuff that could be annoying to some people, like pop-ups, etc.)

Personally, I'd rather get a PM a week about a particular sponsor a/o its products vs. seeing 10 identical banners and would be more likely to use that sponsor, I think. With the PM's, the exposure is different / variable (not the same set of banners each time), yet intermittent but frequently spaced enough to create a good reminder / impression and not annoy...

P.S. Hopefully the length / effort of this post tells you I'm truly trying to help and not just be critical.

Obviously there's a reason why those three sponsors got the extra ad space on the board. Big A is by no means obligated to tell us why (although it might help make sense of it). I do agree, there's no need at all to be rude or disrespectful by ANYONE about it, on either side.

I think the larger blinking ones are good that say synthetk ,but no more than 4, two synthetk on one side and two on the other. The smaller ones with seven in a row gets to be too much. It actually makes you loose focus of what written in them.

I saying this to optimize the boards advertising the members visual attention to them ability to remember them may be better with certain number of blinking advertising as many the brain and visual response to them may be too overwhelming to store the information.

I hear ya there. I may be oversimplifying this, but its kind of like the difference between:

-Glaring headlights blinding you - you just want to look away. If every time you come to that bend in the road (open a page on PM), you're confronted with the same headlights, you just get in the habit of pulling the visor down to block the light (zipping past the banners).

vs.

-A strategically placed blinking billboard that catches your eye with just enough bling to attract your attention and give you that small bit of info. that's both retainable / memorable and has a positive impact.

No shit, right...I'd be seeing them in my dreams:p:D

I only see it for a second before I scroll down.

its no worse the the flashing box of death on every porn site and just as ingnorable. you all know the flashing death box. it has promises of 6 naked college chicks, then 2 hours later you dont know why but your laughing your ass off at dave chappelle clips on youtube and come to the abrupt realization that you have still not put your pants back on.

i definitely agree with the fee, as well as some of the other things that were said.

size of banner, not number.

but id definitely be willing to pay a small fee to be a member, and as previously mentioned, im sure it would keep some "unwanted attention" away. :D

I honestly think the best advertising is all the good threads members start about a particular sponsor.

All the flashing and naked ladies(hint hint) won't mean jack shiznat in me making an order if prior customers don't have a lot and I mean A LOT of positive things to say.

I am butt hurt because you talk about stuff that you don't know shit about. Each one of the top banners has a cost of between $1k and $2k a pop depending on location. Are you going to pick that up??

I am sure at the end of each billing cycle (the end of each month) when ROI gets analized, that is what will decide whether sponsors proceed with their campaigns or not.

Regarding paid memberships - sure, everyone talks big about it until it's time to put up. You are only new here (yet it's amazing that you are involved in conversations about the direction of the site!) so you won't remember similar discussions.
We have over 330,000 unique visitors each month. The proposed membership fee was $1/month. If only half of the uniques paid it, that would be enough to not clog up the board with banners, to develop our own mag possibly, and to sponsor/get on the payroll, top pros who in return would openly talk about everything here on the board.
Everyone was very excited about it, until it was time to pay. Less than 20 people paid!

Or how about how everyone wanted PM t-shirts. There were even votes on various designs. EVERYONE was acting like they wanted them. We got the shirts, cheap too. Sold less than 10 of them!

See, everyone, like you do now, talks big, but VERY few people go through with things.

If these banners piss you off, leave the site. Plenty of others there that will welcome your input.

Homun - thanks for your input. That kind of stuff is what I always appreciate.
