Atlanta Coach Petrino resigns with 3 games left

pretty classless.

I agree, he has a commitment and an obligation to his coaches, players and the fans, guess he was not NFL material, hopefully he'll be happy in Arkansas.

I originally defended him in this post, but as a former player, if what I read is indeed accurate, he's an asshole.

it was classless that he left without telling any players. that is true. but in his defense, he got the raw end of a deal. It seems like the only reason he went there is because of his quarterback development skills, and offensive mind, as everyone saw at louisville. But when Vick went to jail, that entire plan fell through the tube, and he was left with not much. There isnt any defense for him leaving without notice before the end of the season, but I can understand his motives.

the hell w/him.As Keith Brooking said"If he don't wanna be here, then bye!"

I agree, totally classless on his part not to address his players. It shows what he thought of them. No excuse quitting the way he did, even losing Vick. What if Vick had gone down to a season ending injury instead? There's no difference. He's supposed to be a professional and was getting paid big bucks.

If after getting to the pros, he realized he was over his head then he should at least have finished out the season before leaving.

If you were a college kid and he came to your house to recruit you, would you want to play for a coach like that?? I wouldn't.

well there are two ways of looking at this.

he was brought to the falcons with the reasonable expectation of having Vick at the quarterback position. this as we all know this wasnt meant to be..

furthermore, he and his players didnt exactly see eye to eye. coming from louisville to atlanta of the NFL you have to expect there would be some friction between he and the players. he isnt coaching 18 year olds anymore. these are men with big contracts. so, there was some friction in the locker room that isnt totally known but im sure will come out now he is gone. he and deangelo hall are not going to exchange any christmas cards this year. there were alot of communication issues that were handled in house between he and the players that will now come out as im sure we'll see. winning makes everyone happy- its the great cure all. look at the cowboys. losing causes friction, especially when egos are involved.

i dont beleiev he left atlanta cause he was 'losing', even if he was 3-4 games over .500 im sure he would have went to arkansas- they just offered him too much money and its a game he knows.. i think he realised the college game was more to his speed, he didnt have the temperment and patience to go to a losing franchise and turn it around, and didnt have the tools to work with that he was givien the reasonable expectation of having.

do i agree with his abandonment of the team? not at all. but perhaps he had to sign with arkansas this week if he was to be head oach also.

there are alot of variables to this decision that we dont see that im sure will come out in the next few days. the one variable we wont see is the relationship between he and blank- blank has alot of respect for him, so it wasnt a head office issue. its a player- coach issue.

now your arthur blank- where do you go from here?

you have to go into the draft and find a QB. this is a given. you also have to expect to have him sit a year to let him develop. so thats one more year of futility at least for atlanta.

Vick is going to have to serve at least 18 months of the federal indictment, and the state of VA still has to proceed, which means Vick may never see the field again. should goodell not see fit to re-instate him, so Vick is now a non- factor.

then you have head coaching issues. in the interim, you put either the offensive or defensive coach in place to right the ship. but this is a patch in the best case scenario.

singeltary interviewed with atlanta last year before they decided on petrino. do you give him the nod now, or does blank open up his wallet and go after cower, who can now name his price.

thanks to free agency, what looks to be a good draft, and blanks deep pockets atlanta isnt in that bad a shape, but they are definitely now a franchise that can now be considered to be re- building.

Tough to say based on media reports only. But Brooking's comments probably sum it up best. he did not want to be there, so good riddance. College players are a whole lot easier to coach and "order" around, plus they are under your thumb. Pro players are men who are all the best of the best. Much tougher to coach and deal with their demands as well as the politics of pro sports.

I can't remember which coach it was but I remember hearing this one time.

"It's hard to coach athletes in professional sports, really you are more of a guide as a coach."

It very well might be classless to quit in the middle of the season... But think of all the coaches who have been fired halfway through the season? Especially this year?

IMO there is a BIG difference between being fired and quitting. I guess it was just how i was raised. You dont quit.....you finish the job no matter what. Then make your decision after your done.

I know he lost his star player but thats still no excuse....Thats like getting married to a beautiful woman and then she gets in an accident and ends up in a wheelchair so you divorce her...

Well you are right but it seems to me that the owners give up on the coaches, which is the reason coaches get fired... Even if the season is going bad do you think that is fair to the players? Does that make the owners or people who are head of athletic departments a bad person?

I know its sort of off topic but im interested to hear your opinion?

To me, the most egregious violations are the following:

He called the Falcons to tell them he was quitting. This franchsie gave him a $24M contract and he didn't give them the courtesy of looking them in the eye when he resigned.

He walked into a meeting room of his asst coaches and told them he was leaving for Arkansas, and simply walked out. He never had an exchange with his coaches, no thanks for coming to work for me, nothing.

He did not communicate with players in terms of their roles with the team.

This man is not a leader, that is why he didn't last in the NFL. His actions do not command respect, that is why he was not granted the respect you think an NFL head coach would deserve.

IMO, every coach should finish out the year unless something 'unbecoming' has happened. I do believe that the owners and athletic directors should let them finish it out also. Otherwise, what does this teach the players? Just because everything isn't going well....you should just quit? Thats wrong!

As a player, i would have wanted my coach to finish out the year.

You sound like you think you know what your talking about?? LOL

Agreed! I just can't believe he couldn't have waited till the end of the Falcons season??? I'm pretty sure Arkansas would have waited for three games.

I'll second that!

I appreciate your comments mainevent

Also I would like to say that it seems like quite a few players had lost respect for him before he left...
