I have a long term plan(long term being 3 years hopfully)of getting my associates degree for physical therapy assistant. Im currently unemployed, but have spent the last 7 years in the trucking/delivery business and have no desire to ever go back to it.
So, my plan is to take some courses that will go towards getting me accepted into the PTA program and hopefully will be going to school fulltime by this fall. However i still need a job that will be flexible enough to allow me to go to school fulltime.
The local tech school has a 6 week personal training cert. class i could take but im not sure how well rocognised the certification is. On the website for the school is says the following.....

Join this fun career and be a part of what ABCnews.com names the fourth hottest job in the United States, at a national average pay of $25 an hour.

Whether as a career move or for your own personal knowledge, get all the information you need to become a certified personal trainer. This program is offered in conjunction with World Instructor Training Schools, which offers one of the top four certifications for personal fitness training and is the number one certification for Bally Total Fitness.

This challenging course is taught over a five-week period. The national exam is the sixth week. Fifteen hours of hands-on practical training at the College’s Health Fitness Facility,

Lectures include anatomy, exercise physiology, nutrition and health screening. Proof of adult CPR & AED, and a 30-hour internship prepare you to work successfully in the fitness field.

W.I.T.S. is an approved CEU provider for the Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers (BOC), the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), the International Association of Continuing Education and Training (IACET) & Veterans training and education. The American Council on Education has recommended college credits for this course.

I deleted some info that wasnt important, like what building number etc. from the above that i cut and pasted from the website. So if anyone has any opinions or advise please send it my way. I live on the eastcoast in myrtle beach SC so i feel i could do pretty well as a Personal Trainer here. but if there is a better certification please let me know. Also this class costs $600.00.

WITS was the first cert I had. It's a good course, for the most part. Not any different in information than any other certification. However, I had a very hard time getting accepted in gyms because it's not a "major" cert. It was expensive too, if i remember right

If you're going to work by yourself, id say go for it if it's all that's available. But I think you can get ACE, NASM or ACSM cheaper and quicker than 6 weeks. Id go with one of those as they seem to be the "gold standard." ISSA is good, but expensive if i remember..

I think that covers most of them, there's a few more i think. I'd go into the gyms or studios you're looking to work in and ask them what the prefer.

good luck

Certifications

The only ones that really matter are accredited. Such as NSCA, ACSM, and NASM. Best of luck to you.

IFPA
it teaches you so much and the test is extremely hard from what i hear.
im taking the test sunday next weekend.

I've run trainers for the past 4 yrs & he hit the nail on the head

totally agree with Mighty John. If I was you and you are really into it, try to get all of them plus some on the side such as the PN or Westside. you can never be to specialized

if you're looking for easy.. ISSA

I agree with vo2 on those being the "best"

IFPA is accredited with NOCA/NCCA/IACET. These are the people that set up Doctors' Fitness Centre. They even have alot of Specialisation Courses you can choose from. High chance i will be taking their PhD in Medical Fitness. Just need to start saving. :)

Agreed, these were my top choices.

Some of the certs are WAY too easy (ISSA and Cooper, I did the test without opening the book and aced it).
NASM CPT and Perf Enhancing Specialist
Crossfit
ISSA
Cooper

I highly recommend NASM and NSCA for your purposes and knowledge.
