According to the book extreme muscle enhancement carbs aren't that important. He says that the problem with higher carbs is that the body stores these as body fat to much. He also stated that you could get your insulin spike from arginine, alanine, BCAA and glutamine. These supplements pump up insulin without the excess sugar calories. How true is this that you don't need that many carbs and you can relay on protein and fats to fuel your workouts?

i don't like low carbs diet plans for year round use.

I like to eat enough carbs to keep the muscles loaded with glycogen and so that i have energy to lift weights. but once i have enough protein and carbs. add in olive oil for extra calories. I think too many carbs will make u fat but not enough will sale u short.

that is what Phil told me in an email i sent him about bumping calories up to gain weight. That is also what I read in a couple books I have on the Zone diet which i found very interesting. It is a very healthy diet and u could tweak it a lil bit more for bodybuilding goals.

That's exactly what I have learned.....It was just mind bogging that he stated that you shouldn't even take moderate carbs in mass training.....could
arginine, alanine, BCAA and glutamine alone give you a high enough insulin response while trying to gain muscle mass?

Two weeks carb-free...

Something interesting about carbs...

A few years back I decided to get ultra-shredded for summer. I dropped all carbs for about two weeks. My workouts were great, I was pumped, strong, and I looked amazing. This was the only time I really dropped the carbs down to as close to ZERO as possible.

Well, on a Sunday I got the urge to eat carbs so I actually downed an entire box of Cinnamon Toast Crunch Cereal. Not the small box, the huge box that costs like $8 in the supermarket. That really felt good even though I mentally beat myself up over it all night.

Next morning I am at teh gym doing chest. Well, two sets into it I nearly had to stop my workout. My pump was so incredible it was freakin unbelievable. I was sweating like an animal, my strnegth was through the freakin roof, and I was only slightly bloated from the cereal the night before. All in all, I still remember that day because of how amazing I felt during and after that workout. My muscles were loaded!

So, every now and again I try to duplicate that, but it's not the same. I think carbs are essential, but probably not necessary every day. Nowadays I cycle my carbs and I stay big and strong and lean year round.

How low did you drop them? Because when I drop carbs pretty low I am weak and lift like a girl...oh wait. :D No seriously, I don't get pumped and stronger by eating low carbs, just the opposite.

I dropped them as low as I possible could. It was basically a diet of whey protein shakes, tuna, chicken, and eggs. Nothing else for two weeks.

It was most likely the supplements that were keeping my strength up and mentally I felt like I was on a "mission" to get into better shape than ever.

But, after I basically did a massive "carb load", the pump and strength became so much better - so in retrospect maybe I was just thinking I was strong and pumped when in fact, I wasn't...

I hope that made some sense!

Ah, I see supplements.
It is kind of like dropping carbs before a contest then when you get to eat EVERYTHING you want and go lift: you feel amazing! I got it. :)

Would eating carbs only on workout days especially pre and post training help to manage fat levels. That way they're there right away to reload muscle glycogen and rebuild and through the next day muscle glycogen will start to empty until the pre workout meal etc. etc. Does this sound like a theory that would manage to keep the fat off?

I don't know about NO carbs even on non-training days. I was thinking low glycemic carbs on non-training days and also very low glycemic carbs on training days except for the post workout meal. The lower GI carbs, when your body isn't sensitive to insulin, will make sure that insulin doesn't raise to so much that it doesn't turn into fat. I disagree with the "no carb" control in the offseason....Now when it becomes close to a contest...thats a different story.

I thought the thinking now was that you don't even need high glycemic carbs post workout. That low GI carbs actually work better.

Anyone else hear this?

Bro the book is Chemical Muscle Enhancement by L. Rea and he doesn't say that carbs are not important but are very important. he wants you to learn the difference and when to use them.

The higher carbs he's speaking about are the ones that have a high glycemic rating meaning they burn fast therefore causing a high insulin spike, so you dont want to always use these because eventually they will bring on the fat and a person looking to gain lean muscle mass without all the fat should learn to use slower burning carbs because they have a smaller effect on stimulating your pancreas to release insulin. his message about carbs is that its all about control bro.

Bro these are amino acids and i didnt see where he said you can get a I-spike from them but that things such as GH, Insulin and IGF1 are specific sequences of amino acids.

Not true that you dont "need" that many carbs. But true that you dont "want" that many carbs and when done right one can rely on protein and fats with minimum to 0 carbs depending on what their goal is for their workout. hope this helps

No it wasn't...It's extreme muscle Enhancement by Carlon M. Colker, and I was just asking what you guys thought about these statements made by this guy. I still think its whatever your body responses to the best. If your body responses good with high carbs so be it. Eat all the carbs you want. Or vise versa.

L. Rea, Carlon Colker who ever, bro never mind the names as long as you understand the importance of carbs, therefore dont just read but try to understand what your reading so that you can gain the knowledge of it and use it to your benefit

I agree that you should listen to your body- the only person I know that takes in large amounts of carbs and looks great is jay cutler- other than that everyone I know that eats mad carbs especially me even while eating them clean as hell gains fat-unless your an ecto-I wouldnt prescribe that plan-carbs, proteins and fats must be in your diet to be perfect end of story in my book

I tried to go very low to zero carbs and found the same thing; although my workouts seemed ok still when I did do a day of carbing up they were so much better.

I discovered too that on my off days, cause I don't move around much from my job, I could get away with eating about 100-50g of low GI carbs per day (cutoff at 3pm) but my protein is well over 400g/day. I found eating all that protein fills my gut so that I have the energy I need to get around.

On workout days though I take in around 250-300g of carbs/day with simple carbs right after my workout. It's allowed me to keep my abs even bulked without putting on any excess BF, and still having fantastic workouts.

I have noticed though if I have off days with physical activity I do need more carbs, I feel weak with just the high protein.
