Is it a point of not training to failure or getting enough rest before working the muscle again?
Exactly. The problem I have with treating some of these "studies" as gospel is you don't know what other training factors are at play, i.e. proper nutrition, supplemention, rest, AAS usage, etc.
If you push yourself super hard on a muscle group that is still sore from your last intense work-out, you're probably back-tracking a bit, but I assumed that was common knowledge.
Best thing IMO is just to listen to your body. For me, if i start feeling sluggish and lethargic the day after a couple hard days in the gym, that's my sign to chill out that day and focus on rest.
If I get an amazing chest work-out one day and am not sore from it in 2-3 days... I don't think I will be doing any harm by deciding to work that muscle group again if I'm not sore and feel fresh.
