DB flat bench safety?

The thread about pec tears from flat benching has me scared to bench.:eek: What do you guys think about the safety of db flat bench? I would think it would be a relatively safe exercise. The weights are independent and less than if you were using a barbell.
 
As with anything, the heavier you go the more risk of injury. Good form is a must. I feel that dumbells are safer when used correctly. I use them for military press as well and my shoulders feel much better.
 
Dumbells

Obviously you can change the angle of your grip with dumbells which after 30 years of Benching is a big help.
 
i would just advise no forced reps on dumbbell bench. i'll be pushing out forced rep number 2 maybe, with a little help from a spotter and wham, the dumbbell just falls as if i lost control of my arms. my friends notice this too
 
I have been around the block and I think Ive heard of one person (and thats a maybe, I am going by memory, it might be 2, it could be 0) that has torn his pec on flat dumbell bench press.
