Diet Soda?

Anyone quit drinking it completely? Did you notice anything different? There are a lot of theories and some minor anecdotal evidence to support that drinking diet soda gets you fat. Also, many speculate that aspartame is terrible for you. I drink too much diet mountain dew but only notice dehydration. My thoughts are it may make you crave sweets after drinking aspartame. Your thought?

I dont really buy it, I usually drink 1/day during diet mode and it doesnt seem to bother me any, actually helps me not get so hungry sometimes

This is what Wikipedia says about aspartame, I think I'll start drinking coffee again instead of diet coke:

Aspartic acid, into which aspartame is metabolized, is a known NMDA receptor antagonist.[=drug similar to PCP and ketamine!!!] Aspartame itself has been shown to have antinociceptive properties through effecting NMDA receptors in mice. Some studies have also recommended further investigation into possible connections between aspartame and negative effects such as headaches, brain tumors, brain lesions, and lymphoma. These findings, combined with possible conflicts of interest involving CEO Donald Rumsfeld in the approval process, have engendered vocal activism regarding the possible risks of aspartame.

Yes I have cut out sodas completely. I never could get to the low BF I wanted untill I did.All sodas are bad for you, they make your body lose important minerals like pottasium and magnesium. When I drink them I get cramps bad. They make your body think your not thirsty when you need water. Yes they make you fat or hold water[they did me]. The caffine is addictive.Try staying off for three weeks[you will probably get head aches from caffine withdrawl]. After three weeks drink a few sodas during the day,it will probably not taste good. At the end of the day even though you have drank a few sodas your body will give out thirst signals for water. After A few days the thirst for water will go away because the sodas will trick the body into thinking it doent need water.Caffine over a period of time will make your addernials work improperly. It also can interfer with sleep. Dont get me wrong I take caffine but for just a couple of weeks at a time. A mountain dew a couple a times a week before work out is fine. As for aspartaine, [for my body any way]It makes me fell hyper and funkie. I was putting it on my oat meal in the morning, about 4 packs. I ate eggs a few mornings and felt better. Next day I ate oats and only used 2 packs felt OK.From then on I cut out aspartaine all together.

FAT?

I been drinking diet sodas for years and I am not fat. Heck, I been putting sweet n lows in my coffees and oatmeal since 1980 and I have not died from cancer. Of course, I don't consider myself a rat, You need to drink plenty of water, everything in moderation, a diet coke once in awhile will not make you fat.

there is like 3 Kcal in a diet coke (330ml). Like thats gonna hurt you........... Just dont drink 3 gallons a day........
Live a little too, c'mon.

You cannot compare rat studies, who have a very high correlation to any kind of tumor growth with anything you give them, to a human. For one, mice do not have glutathione transferase systems like humans, which makes a huge difference in metabolizing compounds. The human body is more than capable of taking in Aspartame.

However, if it gives you headaches, or any sides, just do the easy thing and elimintae it.....much like those who are sensitive to peanut butter, dairy, grains, etc...:)

I cut out diet soda

But I eat everything plan, when I'm dieting, too. That's just how I like to do it. I'm one of those guys, that it has to be proven to be good for me for me to change.
There's a debate about whether it's bad for you. And there's no real proof either way, so I play it safe and just don't drink them. Now if somebody proves that it good to drink diet soda, you bet I'll start drinking it.
Everybody reacts to things differently. Hell, my training partner's 5'9 215lbs, and he stays at 7% BF year round, and eats what ever he wants. But that's him, it don't work the same for me.

There definately is nothing wrong with being on the safe side my man.

But the problem with the anti-aspartame/diet soda crowd, is that no amount of evidence will demonstrate safety. A common diatribe is that "we don't have long term studies"; the question then becomes "how long is long enough"? The next rant becomes the concept of the "precautionary principle" which is nothing more than "since we don't know everything about something, we should err on the safe side", meaning do not progress. If we followed the toxicological research of saccharin, we would still not be allowed to use this time tested safe product, because in the original test model, the mouse, it was a species specific carcinogen. This has never been demonstrated in humans, but this is not considered, since the Delaney Act requires that all compounds that can be demonstrated to be carcinogenic in animal models cannot be a food additive.

Geeez, I hate I read this. Especially since I drink so much diet mt dew, and not to mention my diet coke mixed with vanilla lba's!

Because large doses of phenylalanine stimulate prolactin secretion in man, we studied the acute effects of oral doses of aspartame (0.534 g, equivalent to the amount of aspartame in approximately 1 L beverage), aspartic acid (0.242 g), and phenylalanine (0.3 and 1.0 g) on serum prolactin and other hormones in normal humans. Prolactin was not stimulated by any of the aspartame meals, aspartic acid, or 0.3 g phenylalanine; a small rise in serum prolactin, similar to that produced by a high-protein mixed meal, followed ingestion of 1.0 g phenylalanine. Serum growth hormone showed no statistically significant changes in response to any of the experimental meals whereas cortisol and insulin fell slightly and glucose rose slightly during each of the meals. We conclude that these doses of aspartame do not alter secretion of prolactin, cortisol, growth hormone, or insulin in normal individuals.

some info :D

please, guys, just enjoy life. worrying about aspartame and phosphoric acid and other shit... and you don't even think twice when taking 50 mg of dbol everyday. not saying you shouldn't take it, i'm just telling you to enjoy life. how many obese people out there with cholesterol problems, diabetes, thyroid problems and a host of other shit drink diet sodas without even thinking twice? hell, most of them think it's healthy cuz it doesn't have those pesky carbs.. and i would bet all my money on that it's not affecting them at all.
I really don't believe in this whole "aspartame will kill you and cause cancer"... aspartame has been here for a while... i haven't seen people dropping dead from it. the only thing i know people suffer from when they drink diet sodas is bloat. and that's it. so enjoy it, and don't make a big deal out of it ;)

Diet Pepsi Max is the shit. It curbs my appetite and sugar free. I only drink them once in awhile. I know they've said aspartame is bad for years. That's in lab mice and maybe if you drink extreme amounts of it. I wouldn't worry about it if you don't drink tons of it.
