I have read before don't go into the gym being super motivated, some motivation is fine, but going in super can lead to injury.
Today, I was squatting 405 like I have done about 10 times before, however I was really pumped up, got a guy to spot me, and long story short. I was on rep #5 and felt a some what sharp pain in my lower back. Went up, and down again, felt it more, said this is enough and racked it..I had 1 maybe 2 more left in me.
Said, maybe its just a fluke so waited a minute, and got back under the bar with 365. Got one, felt it in my back big time, went down, and went up a little, felt a big strain in my back and said fuck it, and just sat it down. Racked the weight and did my ham strings..couldn't do SLDL so I did something else..showered and went home. Its still kinda sore I guess is the word..not really throbbing hurting.

I was beating myself up for not being able to do my squat work out, but missing only 1 work out is better than missing 8 or 12 from having a worse injury. I hope my back is better by next leg day..or even tomorrow for arm day.
So, let this be a lesson to anyone if its only one person, great. Be smart in the gym and don't go in mega motivated.
Learn from my mistake!

There is some truth to that, I read a study not long ago about listening to music to amp yourself up before a lift, and it was similar in the results as what you found that you rely on that sort of stimulus for a good workout. Motivation is great as long as you are not spending extra energy amping yourself up.
Did you do enough warm up sets leading up to your first heavy working set? Sometimes I jump the gun and go to my heavy set too soon...and I had a similar experience as you but with my hammy. Sometimes I'll jump on a bike or elliptical for a few minutes before even my light warm up weights. I would be careful with that back and possibly ice and stretch it good today and tomorrow before your next training session.

Yea, I did 5 warm up sets..and I had on music..I always do..I might start squatting w/o.

I feel your pain. THE EXACT SAME THING HAPPENED TO ME this morning. I had finished 4 sets of heavy squats, then I did some front squats, 3rd set in, 2nd to last rep, my hips seemed to fall out of the groove and got a sharp pain in my lower back... Same situation. I feel SORE, I jsut hope I heal up over the weekend. I am PISSED too...

I think it varies from person to person. I've seen powerlifters that have to get all kinds of jacked before they lift, smelling salts the whole deal. I've also seen guys that are just cool and smooth, and don't want to get too geeked up. I hope the back gets better man. Rest it, if you're still hurtin tomorrow don't go, you'll be ready by the next workout.

Watch the 4th video, this guy gets really geeked before he lifts...

Thanks man..I dont think I could hurt it with my work out tomorrow, but if I feel any pain at all I'm quitting.

Lol funny you post that second link..I have a habit of saying light weight before I squat.

Add in a BBBBOOOOOO!!!! and some YEEAAHHH BUDDDAAAAAYYYY!!! and you're there.

That's a bitch Seven. I had a similiar occurance a few weeks ago while doing hack's. However, my pain in my upper right quad. I thought the entire gym heard my IT band pop ..hurt like a mofo. Thank goodness I have a buddy that is a PT, he hooked me up (literally) with some ultrasound and stene treatments.

chances are it will get worse later today and you will sleep like crap. it probably wont start to lessen in pain until late tomorrow, and SLOWLY get better from there and after about 3-4 days have nothing but a little stiffness. if its what i get a few times a year. you will think you need a chiropractor but i discovered they do nothing for the immediate pain and the recovery time was no different.

Its starting to feel a little better, but I know its the calm before the storm. lol.
I'm just taking it easy and trying to keep my back as straight as I can..so I wont aggravate it.
As long as its good enough to squat in..in about 4ish days, I'm good. :)

Being super motivated it fine, but you need to keep in mind what you're actually capable of. Motivation driven by ego will result in injury. Motivation driven by a desire to progress will result in exactly that.

maybe you'll be lucky and it won't be the same thing i have gotten, if its what i get, barbell curls are out, any rowing is out,(only pulldowns), i cinch the weightbelt tight to minimize the pain also

When lifting heavy, I try to be completely mellow. not amped at all. I have way better control this way.

wish u luck bro.i did the same thing 2yrs. ago but with deads and now i cant squat or deadlift ,betover rows nothin like that now.its a bitch and every so often i attemps these lifts as things feel better and bam 3-4 more months of agony. it ended up being a herniated disk.....skrewed for life now,but just train around inj. now as its not worth it.my chiropractor is my best freind now.i wouldnt advise lifting for few days to see where u stand.mine had just got worse and worse as the days went by.good luck!

I know this one pussy of a guy....er.. me....that does leg curls on his squat day and stiff legged deads or deadlifts on the next leg day when his main leg exercise is leg presses instead of squats.

Once again... I am offering absolutely no advice to you. Your legs are looking terrific.... I am just letting you know that for a long time if I didn't squat I felt like I wasn't "really" training legs. I ended up squatting heavy about four or five times in a row...this was about five summers ago and I really hurt myself with 500 pounds on the bar.... a sharp pain that started at the upper hip right where the quad attaches and it bruised all the way down to my knee in a few days.

I haven't used 500lbs for reps since. i felt strong that day too. I limped around for two weeks.

So you are correct....listen to your body. I've learned and relearned that lesson so many damn times that it's embarrassing.

Thanks bro...I'm glad I found this board and learned over the short peroid of time to lisen to your body..I feel I'm a little ahead of my time when it comes to that, or maybe I just have common sense. lol

I think I partly let my ego get ahead of me, but I was handleing the weight pretty good. Maybe next week it'll be better, but thanks Jethro..I was actually just thinking about leg presses lol.
Damn about your leg, glad it wasen't much worse like you tore something...allthough with the bruseing..it sounds kinda like you did. But what do I know, its your leg. lol.
I hurt my back one time doing DLs...405 5x and I was about 170ish in weight..I couldn't DL for about a month..or squat really, I was scared to ever go back to it..still kinda am doing that heavy.

Exactly how i had to go to the emergency room after a final set of leg presses. Intestines went right into my scrotum. Yeah...I know. Not a nice thought:eek:

Oh, and just so you know....

I wasn't using the number 500 to act strong or something. I am older...and heavier...and all that. In no way was I attempting to diminsh your strength...10 good reps with 4 plates rocks.

I was just sharing with you what happened to me so you wouldn't feel all lonesome in your pain. :)

I surely strained the hell out of it if I didn't tear something. My buddy who makes artificial limbs diagnosed it as an IT band injury. All I know is it SUCKED! LOL.

Let us know how your are doing tomorrow.
