My Potassium Whole Blood is 5.8 (3.5 - 5) is normal.

My Creatinine Whole Blood is 1.43 (.6 - 1.3) is normal.

1 years ago everything was normal levels. Im also sick so the doc wanted to run Blood panels to see what's going on. It's been 5 weeks coughing fluids up and initially thought to be pneumonia. EKG was normal. Gave me some antibiotics and want to monitor things for the next 10 days. Any advice?

Neither are overly concerning. Both could be related to your infection and/or the antibiotic. If that was Rx'd pre labs? The potassium could be from how the blood was collected- you squeezing your fist or too tight of the tourniquet. Which will give a false-positive for hyperkalemia.

Let your body heal and get/stay hydrated as that could play a large role in the slightly skewed numbers.

SDS which is Sodium Polysterene (spelled wrong I'm sure). Its a binder but your level isn't crazy high. Could use diuretic also. If my level was 5.8, I wouldn't do anything except reduce potassium consumption (bananas etc). Cr level is not high for most BB. Mine is about that for the last 30 years. Hope it helps and Happy post Thanskgiving!!

Sick during the draw? Probably a little dehydrated =creatine

And like Stewie said for potassium.

We had a lab tech once. Would always fuck off after draws. Potassium always sky high because they’d let the samples get cold

What were your kidney values shown from your blood work? If your creatine levels are dangerously high. Your kidney will reflect the damage because creatine is a protein that gets broken down through the kidneys.

I know this because I've been there done that lol

Was your GFR computed. Those numbers are so very slightly elevated. I would definitely follow up and get another in a couple months.

Higher potassium actually leads to the higher marker of Creatinine; thus, you would need to find what is slightly elevating and causing a small issue with kidney function. Could be a number of things. Has anything changed in the last year?

Dietary Adjustments:
  • Reduce High-Potassium Foods: Avoid or limit foods like bananas, oranges, potatoes, spinach, avocados, and tomatoes.
  • Focus on Low-Potassium Foods: Include apples, berries, green beans, cauliflower, rice, and pasta.
Increase Potassium Excretion:
  • Hydration: Drink adequate water to support kidney function unless restricted by a doctor.
  • Diuretics: If prescribed by a doctor, diuretics can help flush potassium out through urine.
Your levels are slightly elevated, so they are still concerning but nothing too crazy, but I would still ensure you are making a daily log of how you slept, anything that changed, did you find something that caused you to cough more as the fluids will build up and is different for everyone. Are you having trouble breathing.

5 weeks is a long time coughing up the fluids, though.
