How do you explain to non BBers that you're dieting?

This question frustrates me. Friends want to go out to dinner and eat or go grab a beer but of course none of this fits into my meal plan. I feel sort of silly saying I'm dieting because people automatically assume only fat people diet so I get a lot of "Oh you're not fat!" type comments. The worst though are these know it all types who proceed to tell me how a little alcohol is good for you or everything in moderation is ok. That may be true but no one ever got peeled eating pizza and beer in moderation....except for maybe Dexter Jackson. LOL

So how do you explain to non bodybuilders what it is you're doing without having to put up with any nonsense on their part?

Im far from a pro. but had this conversation with my training partner:

at work we have what we call the "fatwalk" where peps bring in food and socialize..

its all shit food.. seriously

people at work are starting to complain that 'we' don't come hang out and eat with 'everyone else'

my workout buddy's wife told everyone that "they are busting their ass to NOT look like YOU"

that kinda helped

but I just don't give a shit.. ill order water and a double hamburger and shitcan the bun/fries for going out.. if and when people ask.. "im on a no carb diet"

when they bitch.. i just ignore them or make some other smart ass remark about not wanting to look like them.

if your "friends" cannot accept you and your goals/diet... then.. well...

all my firends know i'm a weird guy , always eating some stuff other than the norm. if they are bugging you about it perhaps they dont know you that well. or maybe they just cant comprehend the level of committement and discipline you have. just do what you need to do for yourself and ignore remarks. after all you may be the guy saving their drunk asses from driving home and getting killed or DWI

why do u owe them an explanation? who cares, go out with them for a cheat meal once a week if it fits into ur diet, if not, dont care what others say

Just tell them tuna tastes better than a greasy hamburger. Works for me!!

Well.... If your planning to go out with a bunch of friends to a bar/club then you can disguise your non drinking habits easily... Just order club soda's.. No one will know the difference and think your drinking alcohol... I do this all the time...

last time i was pestered about my diet i simply asked the guy to take his shirt off, and ill take mine off, and well see who looks better. he proceded with some smart ass remark and my response was...."hey, at least i dont need a miror to see what my dick looks like"

It took a while for my friends to get the point too but now they do. I always use to get, well you can come eat this, or just come and hang out (yea I wanna smell all that food and die inside ... lol). I would just say you don't unerstand and can we please just leave it at that.

If they are true friends they will get it after a while.

I have to do many business lunches/dinners and just tell them I am on a diet when I eat the grilled chicken off the top of a bed of plain lettuce and say I don't feel like the rabbit food part of it. Rarely do I speak of the bb part of my life in the business cirlce because of the unfair stereotypes. Believe me I am not ashamed, I just don't share that with them.

One thing you have to understand there are things they probably do we don't get either, but we are a select breed that does what we do and most people will never understand because what they call an obsession we call home.

I have a friend who has been a cop in a VERRY HORRIBLE neighborhood in Philly for 6 years. He has had plenty of opportunities to take tests for a promotion and has never taken one. He wants to stay on the street where in the middle of lunch he ends up chasing a guy down the street while he's stil holding his sandwich. he loves it. I dont get it! but if its what he wants to do then i say more power to him. If i dont bug him about getting shot at, then why the hell doesnt he leave me alone about a can of tuna?!?!?!...lol

I stopped explaining and started ignoring people. The way I figure it is I don't ask fat people why they eat ding-dongs. Why do they have the right to critisize the way I eat. And yes they think somethings wrong with you if your dieting and have less fat than them.
Plus most people don't know anything about nutrition so to explain to them how your diet works is like talking to a wall.

yeah its annoying... i have had some people ask if they can have some of my pre measured food (almonds...old days..lol, or raisens now), i ask them, what will 10 almonds do for you??, what are you going to gain by eating this particular food?> because its alot worse for me NOT to have them, then you to eat them before your french fries and gravey....lol

phats

You could tell them, "I don't want to look like you":D Well, I really don't say that, but I always think about saying it!

I bust out a pic from my wallet of me being a 310 lb walking heart attack.
I think most people that are fat truly realize they are and respect my transformation.

But then I have to confuse them by telling them I eat 8-9 meals a day and twice as many calories :D.

saying stuff like "i don't want to look like you" sounds a little over the top.

just say, "I like to be in shape" or something along those lines. if anyone gets mad or upset, it should be them, not you.

Just tell them you have food allergies!! LOL

Everyone at work just assumed I was on a "diet" and wanted to be "skinny". They didn't understand why i'd pass up the bread and pizza and chocolate and the 5 candy bowls and the bagels, cream cheese and donuts on Friday mornings. After I explained it to a few people, that opened up a can of worms and a bazillion questions, but i educated them all and after they saw the prep transformation and competition pics, they understand.
:)

Hottt said it best...what they call obsession we call home!

Don't bother trying. Normal people cannot understand what you are going through, while they are scarfing back crap.. I like to say, crap on the inside, crap on the outside!

It's always those who need to worry about what they eat that make comments.

Similiar situation, at work morning time. I pop in a lean pocket and grab some water in the break room. This big lady looks at me and says that's all your having for breakfast?

I simply said yea it's plenty for me though i had a million smart ass things to say.

For awhile i owned a bar and when i would diet and not drink i used to catch hell from my regulars...really hard to turn down beer pong with the college crowd.
