I've watched a youtube video of a pretty popular body builder and he said that he owed much of his success early on due to the fact that he sought out the help of a nutritionist.

How many of you have went to a nutritionist before?

What exactly do they do?

How much does it cost?

Well I am a qualified Nutritionist ( I do not work as one though ) so I suppose you might think I am going to say yes it is beneficial, all I will say is that if it is success in bodybuilding you are after you would be better spending the money employing one of the bodybuilder trainers who have a deeper knowledge of what it takes to become a successful bodybuilder and the nutrition associated with your goals specifically.

Not wanting to undermine some of the great nutritionists out there, but unless the nutritionist has an interest in bodybuilding and contest prep then you will get mixed opinions. Many principals of nutrition come from the standpoint of optimum health and optimum nutrition to achieve optimum health. If you are seeking to improve your health, go see a nutritionist it will be beneficial for sure, if you want to become a sucessful bodybuilder emply a reputable bodybuilding trainer.

hope this helps you out some.

Best wishes

Good point!:D

I'd say most of us have more knowledge about the nutritional needs of a bodybuilder than just about any nutritionist out there.

I used to use Phil Goglia from Venice, CA in the 90's. He trained me for a show, which I won the Heavyweight division. I now use Alex Azarian for the past year, I consider him to be good as any nutritionist. I would'nt do any show, without someone's unbias help. At close to 50 and training 29 years, I know what I am doing. I think that people that pay, will stay the course more.

very well spoken. great post!

definetly a big diffrence between a nutritionist and a trainer.
I have a BS degree in dietetics and dietetians and nutritionists dont learn much at all regarding bodybuilding and sports. I was lucky enough to do sports nutrition as my option and I did alot my research and papers in the sports and athletic field. And of course I compete also. Even if you think you know it all you should get others opinoins and experiences to find what works the best for you.

If you can be lucky enough to find a bber that is a dietetian then you will get good answers. or you can just hire a trainer that may not have the credentials but they have the physique or experience to back up there thoughts. Someone else can always find flaws in your diet and training and can really help to give a 2nd perspective.

and also if you hire a trainer, please do research by yourself. dont be one of those people that just does whatever the trainer says and never learns anything from it. converse with your trainer so you can get the best from both worlds. I have worked with alot of people and I always learn something new that I can utlize and adapt.

What are the job prospects nowadays for a dietician latimus? I will be starting college soon and planning to pursue a BS degree in dietetics like you and i wonder if its a career worth aiming for. Reason why i'm choosing dietetics as i have a deep interest in nutrition. I would most likely be aiming for sports nutrition as my option too since we are all into sports, namely bodybuilding in this case.

When I was in college, I had to do a nutritional profile for my nutrition class.

My professor, a nutritionist, flipped out when she saw the calorie and protein intake. It was funny. She wrote "SEE ME!!!!" on my paper with no grade. Had to explain it all away as she thought I was lying.

After talking to her the biggest issue was my sugar and salt intake. Too much pop.....too much salt. I've since cut both down drastically (I love you Mrs. Dash).

yah it gets annoying because throughout the past 5 yrs I have done alot of analyzing my diet and everytime I have to do twice as much work because my cals and intake is so high. the teachers are real bias also so its there way or the highway.

dietetics has been fun. its a real hard major. you take 3 regular chemistry, 3 organic chem, bio chem, bio, microbio, 3 anatomy and physiology classes, then your upper level nutrition classes are biochem of micro nutrients, macronutrients then medical aspect. Its alot of science.

then if you dont have damn near perfect grades you are screwed for getting an internship. after completing the Dietetics classes you have to do a 1yr unpaid 40+hr a week intership in order to take you med dietetics RD exam. then if you want more licensing you have to take another exam for a LD. or if you want to be a sportsdietitan you can take another exam for that.

the interships are hard to get and you have to pay a shit ton of money to go through the application processes, computer matching, interviews etc etc. then after that you pay tuition and fees for your intership and you have no guarenteed job afterwords and you still have to take the tests anyway. so basically after your schooling you have to work for free and pay a ton of money( I would estimate with living expenses, tuition etc a good 30 thousand) and then hope you can get a job. most the jobs dont pay much and there are not alot of jobs out there.

most people dont know what a dietetian is and they are not covered by there insurance to go to one, so people cant afford it. the jobs are mainly in food service or hospital care. sports dietetians are almost non-exsistant. I only know 2 and one of them is a fat lady who has know idea wtf she is doing, but she thinks she knows everything.

OH and there are generally 1 guy to 10 girls in the major and the girls are weird, obese, organic chicks. all my teachers except 2 have been girls and they are sexist also. this is why the ADA has problems getting more guys in dietetics. The ADA has alot of flaws and honestly It has been a very stressful and annoying process.

I could go on and write a book about this shit and rant for days about this and that. if you would like to talk more PM me with specifics I can help you out the best I can.

oh and if you dont do an internship there are very very little jobs you can do, I am lucky enough to look the PART being a bodybuilder so I can utilize what I have learned and personal train and gives diet advice and get by that way. But for others who are obese(75% of the students) they are screwed, they could probably work at a ballys or something but I dont know how credible it looks to people when the person giving the advice looks like shit.

If you are starting out or doing a contest prep, nutritionist can be very helpful

hell they can be helpful year round, and it is good to have an objective eye looking at you to tell you, you are fat :D

All depends on the nutritionist.I have a bachelors in nutrition and there was one class which was an elective in nutrition for sports performance. You have to find one who doesn't just preach the food pyramid.I would say with confidence most well read and researched bodybuilders have a lot more knowlege than most RD's and nutritionists.Better off finding an expert within the sport in my opinion.Don' just see nutritionist and join up.

I feel a nutritionist is very valuable, but they need to be knowledgeable in your sport. Jon Doe nutritionist that works with geriatrics is not going to know how to prep someone for a contest or what drugs are recommended(if your not natural).

I used a nutrition plan set up by Shelby on this board and I highly recommend him to anyone. I went from over 280# of fatness down to 231# for a strongman contest which I won. The fact that I won isn't to brag but to show I maintained strength with a 50# weight/fat loss.

I hate to pick on "nutritionists" but most are like "personal trainers". Absolutely useless. While there are exceptions I have yet to find a good one.

Most seem to still subscribe to the food pyramid and can't fathom why there is an epidemic of diabetes and obesity. While I understand that there are people who are not carb sensitive, my straight from Italy pasta eating wife. For the rest of us most of the theories espoused by nutritionists over the last 20 years are pure poison.

I am sure there are good nutritionists out there but at the end of the day I'll stick with my food log and keep experimenting.

I think you may be confusing dieticians with nutritionists. Most people who specialize in nutrition realize the major flaws in the food pyramid and will design plans to fit the goals of the individual.

one of my friend's mom has a masters degree in nutritional science... called me up a couple of years ago after she saw me in the grocery store (last time she saw me before that, i was 135 lbs of skinny fat) and asked me to set up a diet plan for her.
i told her that she was the nutritionist and she asked me for help? she just said she knows the the science, but knows nothing about how to apply it.

i guess it's kinda like engineering since i can relate... you know how to "design"... an operator doesn't... but when it comes to the "real" work, you can't do shit and the operator knows exactly what to do... you know what i mean?
the operator is like the bodybuilder... doesn't know why or how it works (well, a lot of them are smart and know... but i'm talking about the majority) but they know it works and they know how to deal with it if anything happens.

does that make sense?

yea i saw one in prison prick told me to drink lots of water...see u next year
already knew that jerkoff
