I just thought this might be an eye opening question. if you add up what you spend for gear, supps, excess food, gym memberships, magazines, and everything else we all spend money on that is related to our bodybuilding. whats this habit cost us each month. i bet many of us could be a little fat guy driving a ferrari instead of walking around looking like a ferrari. id rather be the ferrari than just drive it.

so post up, feel free to break it down where u spend what.

it aint cheap for sure,i think i dont want to know the exact number though (could probably buy a house)

i was just thinking about this today, how much i spent on my contest prep. I dont even use gear but between all my supps it was about 200-250$ a month. Thats NOT counting food or gym membership or anything else that just falls into my 'living expenses' as i see it.

It is definatly an expensive hobby.

I don't look at the actual monetary costs related to bodybuiling and the OCD trates related to it (well atleast I am OCD about it), but more so the mental and social aspect of bodybuilding.

I started out just loving to lift and enjoying it immensely. Then I ran my first cycle and the improvements were phenominal. Then I tried to get better and better and learn more and more. Then I stopped eating out, stopped drinking with friends, stopped doing everyday "normal" activities bc I am so into what use to make me happy. Now I am to the point where I know I will never stop or reach a point where I am truly happy with myself bc improvements can always be made.

So what does it cost me? A lot of mental anguish, a lot of loss of friendships due to cutting off ties with things that will effect my results negatively, a lot of activities I use to enjoy. I guess thats just the cost of bodybuilding when you place everything else second to it.

Then again, when I step in the squat rack and rip 495 X 10, its all worth it...atleast for that moment :D

a whole damm lot. and i dont even compete. i cant imagine what the cost is for my competing brothers on here:eek:

with food, memberships, gear, supps. i could prob start my own fresh air fund type shit and help a few kids with all the money i would total up through the yrs.

but i do it cuz its a life style. second instinct now.

That is a great fkn post bro! I have noticed over the years i have lost frienships due to not staying in touch or hanging out because of those exact reasons..negative impact on what i'm trying to acheive. Some times i think i take things a little too serious, however i have got MUCH better about this and don't overanalyzed things or take things as a make or break deal if i miss a meal..

gym membership- $100
suppliments- $250
gear-$250
excess food- $500
magazines and misc junk- $100

the look on the 20 year old gym studs face when an old man hits 400 bench for reps= priceless

Thats great !

and all the responses I have to say I do agree with all of them, and I don't even compete and probably couldn't afford to.
So how much does it cost?
I would have to say A LOT!

I've thought about this many times, especially when i shelled out $900 for my first competition suits!
However, I know i'd probably have a heart attack tallying it all up so really, i just focus on how great it makes me feel and look and forget about the costs.

Besides, can you ever really put a price on investing in yourself?! :)

It's worth it

Yeah, it is expensive when you're anxious for results. I know I spend more than I should. I'm comfortable with the investment to return ratio so I'll deal with the high dollar pay out. Building a great physique is like building anything great. You can't expect to skimp on quality and quantity if the end product MUST be high quality.

well if time is money it costs me more than i will ever know ...but the rewards on the other hand are well worth it...alex

Well, I've never considered myself a bodybuilder, as I've never competed, but I like to look at this a little differently:

What would it cost if I didn't do bodybuilding?

For me, I'm not satisfied with going to work and going home. I want what people who study such things, refer to as a "third Place". If I did not go to the gym, I would end up frequenting a tavern or shopping or something else to spend money. I also would probably develop other hobbies/projects that would eat money.

When I was fishing a lot, too much, I guarantee you I spent more money than a did bodybuilding. When they opened "Bass Pro Shops" I bet I paid their rent the first year!

When I was golfing a lot, too much, I probably spent 5 times what I spend bodybuilding. Memberships, greens fees, traveling to play, bets, lessons etc.

When I was a sports fanatic I had Braves, Falcons, and Hawks season tickets and a season pass to a Ampitheater that hosted concerts. That certainly dwarfed what I spend training.

I bet we all would find ways to spend our time that would eat some of our money along with it. I think bodybuilding saves me money.

Great quote cslim. Thats exactly what I keep telling myself now during my contest prep as I count my loose change and wait for every payday like never before :)

As Cslim says health and your body doesn't have a dollar sign tagged to it. But, if bodybuilding is breaking your budget, than priorities need to re-evaluated. But, if I had to say food with regards to bodybuilding lifesytle is the most expensive and is the bulk of the money besides normal living cost/bills. But, hey I do not mind spending money of the food part!

In 11 years of training, food bill and all other things related to my health and physical appearance included, it's a safe bet to say I spent a few hundred thousands $$$... but how many exactly, I'd truly be unable to say! :)

I believe it, I really would not want to sit down and figure it out.......:p But if you enjoy and love what your doing who cares about cost as long as you enjoy it.....:D

At least you know you're doing this which counts for a lot! Most of us will have fallen victim to that so you're not alone :angel-sm;

Well its all what you make of it... me, I'm a recreational lifter who doesn't do any gear. That said I'm probably a hell of a lot smaller then most of the people here. My costs are as follows:

GYM: $30 a month (not a fancy gym, some wellness center)
FOOD: $10 a day (this is an estimate, but I generally don't eat out much and this doesn't count eating out) ~$300 a month
SUPPS: protein powder say a 5lbs a month... ~$50
Vitamins (I wouldn't even count this as a bodybuilding expense I'd take a multi vit regardless) $10 a month

TOTAL: $400 a month

I've spent a lot of money thats for sure, but looking back on things what has made me pissed off is I spent alot of money on things I didn't need to achieve the look I was going for. The best way for me is to use my money on a couple 'real cycles'/yr, and then just do the best I can with diet and nutrition throughout the remainder of the time. What I used to get too caught up in was thinking I needed every damn thing someone said worked great.

Exactly! I was in the same boat and am trying to get out. Ive spent so much on shit that didnt do anything it makes me embarrassed. :/
