How quickly can one grow real muscle?

I am wondering how fast an experienced BB can keep adding new muscle tissue? Not just water and bloat but real muscle gains?

Didnt Phil Heath add 25lb in 2 years, going from 215 to 240 on stage?

What would account for craziness like this in an already very well built man?

Gear, calories, training? It has to be gear?

First you need to know for sure if these are his real weights! Much of what you read is sensationalised to sell supps and mags. The real truth is that even with the best genetics adding 5-10lbs total of real solid lean mass is a good year for many top level pros. At some point we will all be limited by genetics with regard to lean muscle mass. Yes gear will push us beyond normal genetics and the body's reluctance to be that big, but it is not always just gear.

This subject has intriqued me for years and I have kind of studied this phenemenon. I have come to the following conclusions, The rapid increase in size in advanced body bulders I believe has to do primarily with a radical
increase in
1. Food. namely protein. Drugs cant make you grow without food.
2.Increased time/resources. Many a bodybuilder after a big showing gets a contract that affords more time and money to make major improvements. This may include more or expensive chemicals.
3. Genetics

If you ever get a true number it will be depressingly small.

To become a mass monster takes many many many many years no matter how much you take or how much you eat.

I'm going to cry now.

Listen, I don't pretend that it's easy or it's fast but there have been some bodybuilders who exploded with new mass in one years time like Ronnie Coleman and to a great extent Kai Green. I believe thats what this thread is about. David Henry went from a middle weight USA winner to three year later doing serious damage at the Ironman Pro

so if he gained 5 pounds a year then he was 15 pounds heavier. that is NOT "magical" thats pretty standard. even if he gained 10 pounds a year that is a 30 pound difference and that is pretty gradual too.

big gains in lean mass is MORE drugs and MORE food period. ronnie coleman was a fulltime cop for 5 mr. o's so i don't think more rest was the secret:rolleyes:
its a drug/genetics game. if you got the genetics you don't need much gear. if you got tons of gear then you don't need the perfect genetics if you got both... your name is Mr. O:D -JS

Best Post!!! Why don't you guys ask one of our Moderators, Mike 1107?

I use to be one of you guys that thought it couldn't happen that fast. But I'm sure your going to keep thinking its something else.

I THINK that an AVERAGE person, with a full time job, kids, life in general along with average genetics could naturally add 12 LBS of lean muscle a year up to the point where your DNA says " ok thats it your not getting any bigger and staying this lean" to me thats seems like a reasonable amount of lean tissue to gain from year to year. but its just my opinion.

DC manual states that each time you workout, if you beat your last lift, and rest/nutrition are sufficient that the muscle will grow 1/64". 1/64" per week for a year adds up to almost an inch per year.

He just made that up as an example.

It takes a lot more muscle for a 21" arm to go to 22" than it does a 13" arm to go to 14".

Naturally add 12lbs a year is not average lol (clarification: assuming you've been bbing for at least a couple for years). For someone enhanced this is damn good. Only this will last so long, until its required to bump up doses and nutrient uptake even then many will fight for this kind of mass.

I've heard 10lbs gained for every inch.

I've heard 10lbs gained for every inch.

Myth.

It just isn't that simple, at all.

There are countless variables.

I would say nearer 15lb for an inch on the arm, 10lb for an inch on the leg and 6lb for an inch on the chest, this is if one grows evenly all over.

I know myself, i had 16 inch arms at 180, now I am 230 I have 19.25 inch arms. This equates to an inch for every 15lb on my arms.

My chest has gone up 8 inches during this time, so roughly an inch per 6lb.

There are many variables however

I think you guys might be forgetting what 5-10 pounds of PURE MUSCLE looks like.. go to the grocery store and try to find a 5 pounds steak.. its massive.. imagine that steak spread out on your bodyparts..

my point is- don't get depressed by the numbers.. 5-7 pounds may not sounds like a lot, but if we are talking pure muscle, it really is a lot (especially on a shorter guy)

It really bugs me when I see a column in the newspaper that states a particular athelete put on 25lbs of muscle over the off-season, that's about 3-4 months. Without the aid of anything not allowed in the sport how is this even possible?
